Density and Volume Problems

DENSITY AND VOLUME PROBLEMS!
1. What is the volume of a rubik’s cube that is 8.5 cm on each side?
2. A grease that is used by NASA for lubricating parts of the space shuttle has a mass of 10.6
grams, and a volume in a graduated cylinder of 5.6 mL. What is the grease’s density?
3. I have two boxes shown below – both are the same volume – 595 cm3. One is filled with
silver, which has a density of 10.50 g/1 cm3, and the other is filled with water, which has a
density of 1 g/ 1 cm3. Which box is going to weigh more?

4. A white rectangular solid of an unknown substance is weighed on a balance. It has a mass
of 17.33 grams. It has a length of 1.5 cm, a width of 3.5 cm, and a height of 1.5 cm. What is
the density of this solid? Looking at the chart on the next page, what could this substance
be?
5. Jimmy Beautifulicious brings a “gold” necklace to a jeweler to sell it for some cash. The
jeweler is suspicious that it is not gold! The gold necklace has a weight or mass of 86.5
grams. The jeweler puts the necklace in a graduated cylinder full of water, to figure out its
volume. The beginning volume on the graduated cylinder is 56.0 mL. When the necklace is
placed into the graduated cylinder, the water level goes up to 66.1 mL. Looking at the
chart below, what is the necklace made of?
6. I have two objects – Object A, and Object B. Both weigh 225 grams. Both are hidden in the
boxes below. If object A has a density of 5 g /1 cm3, and object B has a density of 10 g /1
cm3, then describe the volume of object B compared to object A!

7. What is the density of an unknown flammable liquid, if a sample of it has a mass of 35.9 grams,
and a volume in a graduated cylinder of 44.32 mL? What could this liquid be?
