Blue Print of Floor
Oh, no! The teacher’s house got flooded! Now, it needs to be
remodeled. Here is the floor plan of the living room. As you can
see, the shape is very different from the usual.
How can you use your knowledge about area to help your
teacher figure out how much carpet is needed to cover the entire
room and how much it will cost?
15 ft.

1 – How many different shapes can you identify in that picture? List them all.
Possible answer 1: We can identify 2 semi-circles, 1 right triangle, 1 trapezoid, 1
square and 1 parallelogram.
Possible answer 1: We can identify 2 semi-circles, 2 right triangles, 1 rectangle, 1
square and 1 parallelogram.
2 – Describe how you plan to calculate the area of the entire shape.
I need to calculate the area of the identified figures and add them up to get the
total area.
3 – Use the picture above to trace the shapes you listed in question 1.
4 – Calculate the area of the shape. (Round your answer to one decimal place).
50π+225+375+28.125 π +50+487.5=1382.9ft2
or
50π+225+375+28.125 π +50+112.5+375=1382.9ft2
5 – If the cost of carpet is $3.09 per foot square, calculate how much it will cost to
cover the entire floor. (Round your answer to one decimal place).
1382.9 3.09 4273.7 dollars
6 – Suppose that your teacher wants to cover only the round shapes with carpet
and the rest with wood. Calculate the cost of the remodeling if the cost of the
wood is $4.25 per square foot.
50π+28.125 π =245.4 ft2
245.4 3.09= 758.3 dollars
225+375 +50+112.5+375=1137.5 ft2 or
1137.5
4.25
225+375+50+487.5=1137.5 ft2
4834.4 dollars
Total: 758.3 + 4834.4 = 5592.7 dollars
