Monster University
Features: vocabulary acquisition, speaking practice, grammar practice
(optional)
This activity is about acquiring and revising adjectives describing looks
and personality. In case you want to do some specific grammar practice,
my suggestion is that you focus on simple modal verbs and the Present
Simple.
Proficiency level: B1-B2
Estimated length of implementation: 20-30 minutes depending on the size
of your class
Preparation: print and photocopy the pictures and the adjectives
Implementation

Offer them this set of adjectives. It’s assumed that students are already
familiar with some of them. You might want to add some new words to it
or simply use your own list of adjectives.

adventurous, aggressive, arrogant, brave, mean, confident,
talented, sensitive, moody, dumb, bright, evil, dishonest,
impatient, bad-tempered
large, obese, scruffy, stocky, bald, frightening, round-faced,
slim, medium-build, unattractive, neat, untidy
Distribute your list of words among groups.
2. Enter the monsters
Students work in groups again. Walk around in the class with the pictures
in your hand and let students draw one. Explain that these monsters
attend the Monster University and you want them to describe the beasts’
looks and personality first. Students should name them, and also think of
what the monsters major at the university. They need to think of some
special powers their ‘students’ possess. At this point, you might
emphasize using can and be able to.

If you want to practice the Present Simple as well, just ask them to come
up with the monsters’ daily routine. Encourage students to come up with
creative and funny ideas.
Here’re the monsters. If you don’t like any of them, feel free to use your
own pictures.
