Hurley’s GROOVY Newsletter February 10, 2017 REMINDERS: Please remember to return the agenda and homework folder each day. A look back at this week...… Good News Club: Mondays CRUSH Valentines: Kids may purchase for 75 cents each morning. Spring Break: March 13 – 24 (March 20 – 24 possible snow make-up days) Fridays: Students may wear a hat for 25 cents. Reading: The students read poetry this week. The class also began reading the novel, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. We focused on the following skills: stanza, meter, lyric/free verse poetry, simile, metaphor, and theme. Language: We worked on homophones (words that sound alike but are spelled differently with different meanings). Additional daily practice was used to help reinforce all 5th grade language skills. Writing: The students wrote riddles using their homophones. Math: The kids worked on these skills this week: area with mixed numbers, compare mixed factors and products, regular polygons, and mean/median/mode/range. Valentine’s Day Each child may decorate a container/box for their valentines. The containers can be brought in at any time up until Valentine’s Day. A class list is included on the back of this newsletter. Social Studies: The students began their next unit on the American Revolution.
