Tradition of Excellence ~ Commitment to Progress
Williams Bay School District is teaming up with the Barrett Memorial Library and local
organizations for a community-wide reading project. This is a great opportunity to build
community among the elementary, middle, and high school, now that the schools all share
one campus. The big idea for this project is to get an entire community to read one book
and share in a common story, theme, and message. We have chosen to read Wonder by
R.J. Palacio. The theme of this book is showing kindness, acceptance and empathy toward
others.
Beginning in January, students in grades 3-12 will read the novel as part of their reading/
English class or as a classroom read aloud. Students in younger grades will be reading
picture books that have the same message of showing kindness, acceptance, and empathy
toward others.
To kick off our Wonder project, the student councils in our district will be hosting a
pep rally on Friday, February 10. Thanks to the generosity of the SCA, every student
and staff member will receive a T-shirt with the program’s message of “Choose Kind”
before the assembly. Students will wear their T-shirt to the assembly and then home from
school that day! We will also have “Wonderful
Wednesdays” once a month where we will have Decorate your shirt at the library!
February 23 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
an activity and ask that all students wear their
February 24 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
T-shirt on that day.
11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Barrett Memorial Library will host workshops March 15
where students can decorate and personalize
their T-shirts. These shirts will be a way for all students, staff, and community members to
be unified in spreading the same message.
Wonder is a really great book with a powerful message and we can’t wait for our
community to read it! Check out a copy at Barrett Memorial Library!

Splashing Around in Second Grade
Second graders at Williams Bay Elementary are lucky and excited to be spending five
Thursday afternoons at the Lake Geneva Family YMCA learning basic swimming skills.
SPLASH is a safety around water program that teaches kids life saving skills in a sequence
to help prevent drowning. We are able to participate in this fantastic program through
the generosity of the YMCA, who has paid for bus transportation, the facilities, and the
instructors to work with the children. Swimming is an invaluable life lesson considering
we are fortunate to live in a community where we have access to Geneva Lake. The smiles
and laughter of the children are examples of the intangible rewards of this beneficial
program. Hopefully we will continue this program for years to come.

BLOOD DRIVE
6:45 AM to 11:45 AM on March 17
Williams Bay High School, along with the Blood Center of Wisconsin, are
sponsoring a Blood Drive in the high school gym on Friday, March 17 from 6:45
AM until 11:45 AM. Appointments are encouraged and can be made by calling the
high school at (262) 245-6224. Walk-ins are also welcome. Please bring a photo ID.
Potential blood donors must be at least 16 years old (with parental consent) and in

good breakfast, and drink plenty of fluids in preparation for their donation.
This is a great volunteer opportunity! The donation process takes approximately
one hour. Please remember to bring a photo ID. This year’s goal is to receive 120
donors. Each blood donation may save up to three lives.
Some members of the Williams Bay Spanish Club are showcasing this
year’s t-shirt, designed by Ben Dellheim. The club recently attended a live
performance of Don Quijote at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts.
Third Grade is Out of This World
On Thursday, January 12, the third grade students showcased their knowledge
of space and planets by presenting a space museum for all elementary students,
staff, and community members. Student projects were on a variety of subjects
such as planets, stars, black holes, spacecraft, and the solar system.
Students chose, researched, and created a 3-D representation of their topic.
At the museum, the students became the experts on their topic and shared their
knowledge with the visitors.
Third graders Liliana Lambert, Elliott Keller, and Finn Pecht take a tour of
the Third Grade Space Museum and look at their classmates’ displays.

District Discussions
Finding an Elementary Principal
By Superintendent Wayne Anderson
It is said that “all good things must come to an end,” and in some ways, this saying is
appropriate as the Williams Bay School District prepares to find a new elementary principal.
Ms. Barb Isaacson has faithfully served the school district as its elementary principal for the
past twenty-five (25) years and will retire at the end of this school year. I have worked with
her closely for the past four years and have seen, first-hand, how much she cares for her staff,
students, and the entire Williams Bay community. When we asked the staff to provide us with
the characteristics and talents that they would like to see in their new leader, they were almost
unanimous in their response – please find us someone exactly like Ms. Isaacson. Their praise
and dedication speaks volumes about how much they respect her leadership.
In preparing to find our new elementary principal, the Board of Education started the process
with a review of the Elementary Principal’s job description. We wanted to make sure that the
job description matched the skills, talents, and attributes that we were looking for in our new
elementary leader. At the beginning of the school year, I reviewed the current job description
and made suggested modifications. In November, the Board of Education held a meeting with
all elementary staff to get their feedback on the qualities and characteristics they felt would be
valuable in their new principal. I then took the information provided at this meeting and made
some additional changes to the job description. On December 12, 2016, the Board of Education
approved the new elementary principal job description.
About one week prior to Winter Break, I posted the job opening on WECAN, an educational
job database where employers post educational openings and interested candidates submit the
required materials. In the application process, interested candidates provide the district with
a cover letter of application, a resume, educational transcripts, letters of reference, answers
to a series of essay questions about why they want to become our next elementary principal,
and their opinions on various educational topics. As of Tuesday, January 17, 2017, the school
district had already received thirty-five (35) applicants for this position. The job vacancy closes
on Monday, January 23, and I expect that once the posting closes, the district will have received
approximately forty (40) applicants for the position.
Once the position has closed, the Board of Education, Dr. White, and I will review all the
applicants and determine which ones we feel meet our criteria and warrant an interview. I
anticipate that the district will interview between seven and nine candidates for the position.
The first round of interviews will be held the week of February 6 – February 10. The initial
interview team will be made up of two Board members, Dr. White, five to seven elementary
staff, one or two community members and myself. The goal of the first interview team will be
to select the top three candidates for a second round of interviews.
The second round of interviews will be held during the week of February 13 – 17. The
second interview team will be composed of the five Board members and myself. After this
round of interviews, the Board will select the individual that they would like to lead our
elementary school upon Ms. Isaacson’s retirement. Once the candidate is selected, I will do
reference and background checks on the final candidate. If these checks solidify our selection,
I will start working out an acceptable contract with the individual based on the contract
parameters set forth by the Board of Education.
If everything goes according to plan, the Board of Education will announce the new
elementary principal during the week of March 6 – March 10 and will formally approve the
hire at its March 13, 2017 Board of Education meeting.
The new principal will then officially start his/her position on July 1, 2017. One of the Board
of Education’s most important roles is the selection of district leadership. Our school district
has been very fortunate to have Ms. Isaacson as our elementary leader for the past twenty-five
years, and she will be sorely missed. However, I am confident that we will be able to find a new
elementary leader who will build on Ms. Isaacson’s success and leave his/her own mark on the
educational future of our school district.

NICK ROBISON
Williams Bay High School senior Nick
Robison was one of 19 Wisconsin
students in the First District who received
nominations for appointments to the
U.S. service academies. Young men and
women wishing to attend U.S. service
academies must obtain a nomination from
an authorized nominating source, like a
member of Congress. Wisconsin’s First
District congressman and Speaker of the
House, Paul Ryan, nominated Robison for
appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
High School Students Visit Field Museum
By Samantha Hartwig, Junior
On November 21, 2016, the Williams Bay History
Department took a group of high school students to the
Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois. The Field Museum was
founded in 1893 by the very confident Marshall Field. This
museum is world-famous and is one of the biggest tourist
attractions in Chicago. The students had the amazing
opportunity to visit different exhibits located throughout
the museum.
The Field Museum is mostly known for its famous
T-Rex dinosaur, Sue. Sue is the largest and most preserved,
complete Tyrannosaurus Rex, standing at 13 ft. tall at the
hip, and 40.5 feet tall from snout to tail. To get the full
experience the students all piled into a showroom, where
they were able to see the 3D show about Sue the famous
dinosaur.
The museum consists of 15+ exhibits, including a
tattoo exhibit, DNA exhibit, Ancient Egypt, the Ancient
Americas, and the Evolving Planet. Throughout the
museum, the students were able to see Paleontologists at
work studying the fossils in their lab. The DNA exhibit
had a window where the students were able to see how
the scientists work in the labs. The Field Museum was an
amazing in depth learning experience. I give it a 10/10!
