Adoption and Redemption
Rob Norris, Senior Pastor
The apostle Paul wrote, “We wait eagerly
for our adoption as sons, the redemption
of our bodies.”
He was expressing a
thought that many of us share when we
feel the pain and the weight of the world.
We look for the day when the Lord Jesus
will return and we will have new bodies
and our present pains and challenges will
be ended.

But he also was making clear a very
precious reality: that our present adoption
into God’s family is as perfect as God can
make it. Even in heaven we will not be more the children of God
than we are now.
This truth reminds us that the work of the Lord Jesus Christ on
our behalf is complete and we may be assured that there is no
condemnation in the present or awaiting us. When Jesus exclaimed,
“It is finished,” He perfected forever the salvation of His Church and
removed the curse from His people, hurling our sins into an infinite
depth.
While our present adoption is limited and our bodies are not yet fully
redeemed; nonetheless one day they will spring from the dust—free
from corruption, prepared for our citizenship in heaven with the
presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. All this is accomplished for us
and we wait for bodies like that of our resurrected Savior, without
deformity or infirmity, without sickness or pain, and where sin will
be no more.
Our heavenly Father has adopted us; our Divine Savior has redeemed
us; and the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, has sealed us! That is the
promise. So, with these things in mind, we can wait eagerly, but live
expectantly and gratefully till the promise becomes reality. It is the
sight of the future that strengthens us in the present.

From the Pastor's Study
July/August reviewed book
“Revelations of Divine Love” by Julian of Norwich
Last month I commended to you St. Augustine’s “Confessions”
as one of the great classics of the Christian faith. This summer I
want to commend to you “Revelations of Divine Love,” by Julian
of Norwich.

Though less well-known than Augustine, this woman, living in
the 13th century, recorded her contemplation of her mystical
experiences of the presence of Christ. Her meditations are quite
extraordinary and are filled with the knowledge of the grace of
God. Living at a time when the Black Death (Bubonic Plague)
was ravaging society, she prayed as a young woman that she
would receive three wounds; that of true repentance, of kind
compassion and of a longing for God. To read her work is to be
brought into a different world of Christian mysticism, but one
that reveals a passionate longing for Christ and a surprising
awareness of the reality of grace. She writes: “In this life there
is within us …a surprising mixture of good and bad. We have
the risen Lord and also the wretchedness and mischief done by
Adam’s fall. Kept secure by Christ we are assured by His touch of
grace, of salvation.”
She articulates not only an assurance from Christ but also an
intimacy with Him in the reality of human suffering. Her writings
are typical of that mysticism that explores the inner tension
between the pain and sin of our present life and the reality of the
love and blessing of knowing God intimately.
While this work may be strange to some, it offers a corrective
to the intellectualization of faith that can be the soul destroying
product of rationalism.

“Creative Living Bible Studies”
by Diana Schick
We rejoice with the body of Christ that God’s Word is being
spread through Creative Living Bible Studies, a set of several
books written by Fourth’s own Diana Schick. People in the
Washington, DC area join others around the world in using these
Bible studies. Creative Living Bible Study has been translated
into Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, Hindi, Kannada, Spanish,
and Urdu. The studies are available also online, making them
especially useful for missionaries and others who cannot buy
study resources or receive them through the mail. Believers,
from the halls of power to the halls of prisons, are using these
studies to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ and to
mature in their understanding of God’s Word. Nonbelievers, too,
have come to believe through Creative Living Bible Studies. A strength of the studies is the section on life application. The first
half of each lesson focuses on a portion of Scripture. The second
half asks questions that build on the theme of the scriptural
portion and directs one to other passages that support each
lesson’s theme. This helps us think through how the scriptural
truths apply to our lives today and within today’s culture. Written
to encourage group discussions, the questions also challenge the
individual in private study to stop and think about applying the
Word. The author is gifted in clarifying difficult concepts, words,
and passages. There are a variety of lessons from the Old Testament, i.e. Genesis,
Ruth, Twenty-Third Psalm, Nehemiah. Some New Testament
studies include Acts, Romans, James, Philippians. Topical studies
include the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, the Life of David, and
the Fruit of the Spirit. To see other Creative Living studies,
please go to the website: www.clbs.org.
The Word is timeless. The Word is relevant to each of our
lives. Creative Living Bible Studies bring these together so that
Christ is central in each study.

We are excited to share that Mrs. Jeanne
Minnick, Fourth School’s second grade
teacher, has been named the 2013
Maryland’s
Preserve
America
History
Teacher of the Year. The award is sponsored
by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American
History. The first private school teacher to
win this award, Mrs. Minnick has been the
second grade teacher at Fourth Presbyterian
School for ten years.
She received a
$1,000 honorarium; Fourth School’s library
will receive a core archive of history books
and educational materials from the Gilder
Lehrman Institute of American History.
The 2013 award honors elementary level
teachers. The selection of the state winner
is based upon several criteria, including: at
least three years of classroom experience
in teaching American history; a deep career
commitment to teaching American history,
which includes local and state history;
creativity and imagination in the classroom
that address literacy and content beyond
state standards; close attention to primary
documents, artifacts, historic sites, and
other primary materials of history, including
oral history; and evidence of thoughtful
assessment of student achievement.
Inaugurated in 2004, the Preserve America
History Teacher of the Year Award promotes
and celebrates the teaching of American
history. The award honors one exceptional
K-12 teacher of American history from each
of the fifty states, the District of Columbia,
Department of Defense schools, and US
Territories. Mrs. Minnick’s award was presented to her at
Fourth School’s end of the year Celebration of
Learning in June by Ms. Donna Olszewski, the
Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year
coordinator for Maryland and a Social Studies
Specialist for the Maryland State Department
of Education.

This past winter, Anna
Gray (a rising 8th grader)
submitted an essay to
the Daughters of the
American
Revolution
(DAR)’s annual writing
contest as a part of a
history assignment. Essay submissions were
to focus on an unrecognized person or group
who provided military, patriotic, and public
service in support of the American Revolution

heroes. Anna wrote about Sybil Ludington,
a 16-year-old girl who rode through the night
to warn American troops that the British were
approaching.
Not only did Anna win at the district and
state level, but the regional level as well. In
mid-May, we learned that her essay placed
second in the nation out of 10,000 essays!
We are very proud of Anna’s accomplishment
and look forward to her future writing.

The Future of ESOL at Fourth
Recent e-mails from a Chinese student regarding our summer Conversation ESOL
classes read: “How lucky I am! I am so excited. I cannot wait to attend this year’s
classes. The summer class last year was awesome; I learnt a lot from it.” We get
similar inquiries from the ever-increasing numbers of international students who come
to the Washington area daily.
Teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) at Fourth has blessed hundreds
of students and newcomers over the years. Teachers who have participated will testify
that it’s a wonderful way to show the love of Christ and welcome “strangers and
pilgrims” into our country and church. But with Director Margaret Cudney’s retirement,
we face an immediate need for a new program director, scheduled to begin its 17th year
in the fall. Pastor’s Page..........................2

Duties of the ESOL Program Director include recruiting teachers; encouraging them to
take advantage of ongoing training programs; providing logistical support; choosing
curriculum and buying books; marketing to potential students; testing and placing
students in classes according to their level of English proficiency (five levels currently
offered); eliciting congregational support and participation in special activities, such as
the International Christmas Potluck and the International Picnic; and welcoming ESOL
students and their families to other activities of the church.
A degree in teaching English as a second language is not required but some teaching
experience is preferred. Four volunteer teachers have already committed to teach this
fall; we need two more teachers and additional substitute teachers to be fully staffed. Other ways you can help are presenting devotions, assisting with music, or arranging
for snacks during break times.
The most important requirement is a heart for ministry to internationals and a desire
not only to help them learn English but also to learn about our church and the God we
serve. If you’d like to meet our teachers, ask questions, and see how you might
support or participate in this outreach ministry, please join us for a briefing at
7:30pm on July 17 in Room 131. Or call Judith Wortman, (301) 654-5902 for
further information. Help us keep Fourth’s ESOL program alive!
NOTE: A summer Conversation Class is being offered Tuesdays at 7pm through July
30 in Room 131. Registration for regular classes is scheduled on September 10.
