Europe: an expert’s view
The Danube flows through ten different countries as it
makes its way to the Black Sea, linking a range of very
diverse European cultural landscapes. Our on-board
lecturer is an expert on the continent’s turbulent history,
as well as the political issues surrounding it today with the
growth of the European Union.
Pécs – European Capital of Culture
Pécs, first founded around 2,000 years ago, has been influenced by a great many cultures, the impacts of which
can be spotted on almost every corner of this beautiful
city – be it in Roman graves, Turkish minarets or Byzantine
baths. Hungary’s oldest university town was even crowned
European Capital of Culture in 2010.
The Iron Gate
Over several thousand years, the tireless force of the
Danube forged a pathway through the South Carpathians
and Erz mountains of Serbia. The resulting scene is known
as the Iron Gate, or Djerdap in Serbian. Today this narrow,
cliff-lined gorge is a national park and an undeniably
romantic channel. The narrowest point is known as the
Kazan, which means “kettle”.
