greater distances.

The development of triangular sails
allowed sailors to travel in almost any

Ptolemy was a Greek geographer who

explore the world.

Portugal benefitted from these early
voyages because to allowed them to gain
new territories. This included the Azores,
Madeira, and Cape Verde Islands. They
also obtained gold from African Kingdoms.

why he is an important person in history. [P.325]
Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator. He
was able to convince Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain
to pay for his voyages. He claimed the island of San
Salvador. He sailed to Cuba and Hispaniola. He
believed that he was exploring the coast of Asia.
Later it is discovered that Columbus discovered a
new world.

were most likely peaceful, independent people who
lived off the land and rarely encountered outsiders.

After the discovery of the Taino, they became slaves
o the Spanish explorers. They may have been
separted from loved ones. They were no longer
independent.
13. Explain why the New World was
called the Americas? [P.326]
The Americas were named because after Amerigo
Vespucci explored the new world and realized it was
a new continent and not Asia he named it the
Americas.
14. Why did the Europeans place so much
emphasis on Asia when there was an
unexplored and undeveloped continent
available? [P.327]
The Europeans focused on Asia because it was a
known factor. They were seeking wealth from trade
for items that had a known value. At first, they weren’t
seeking to settle and build colonies, which would
cost money to establish and might not bring profits.
