Executive Director’s Report
ANNUAL VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER WHY I STAY IN THIS BUSINESS
We held our annual volunteer appreciation
dinner on April 10th, which was attended
by 105 volunteers. For a slide show of the occasion link to: https://video214.com/play/
ckDYU0C8EfBC1z3UafGHPA/s/dark. The occasion led me to reflect on why I have stayed
in this business for forty years. Quite simply
it is because I get to work every day with the
kind of people who were present at that event
– mature, experienced, accomplished, and interested in making a contribution to something larger than themselves.
Volunteers understand that it is better to give than receive, that their happiness depends on the happiness of others, and that it really does take a
community to give us all the kind of life that we wish for ourselves, our
families and friends.
Our wonderful entertainment for the evening was the “Rolling Crones”
a singing group who are part of “Crone of Puget Sound”. Their mission:
Through programs and activities, Crone of Puget Sound: Encourages, supports, and informs older women about possibilities, opportunities, and
adventures as they age. Provides opportunities to join a widening circle
of friends. Provides younger women an opportunity to experience a community of vital older women. Supports the visibility and activism of older
women in the wider community.” It was our pleasure to host them. Talking with them afterwards, it was clearly their pleasure to perform for us.
INVITATION TO OUR ANNUAL GALA DINNER AND AUCTION – MAY 6TH
Please accept my personal invitation to attend our third annual Gala Dinner and Auction on Saturday, May 6th at 5:30 pm here at the Senior Center. The cost is $75 per person. RSVP to our office. The auction committee,
co-chaired by Cheryl Reagan and Vivian Egashira, has done an extraordinary job in every aspect of the event – planning, publicity, dinner and
dessert, silent and live items, technical and volunteer support, working
with our auctioneer.
The theme for this year’s event is “Sunset”. The sun is indeed setting on the
old senior center building. It has served this community very well indeed
for fifty years, but everyone knows it is time for a new beginning. The
quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson in our auction program is apt for the
occasion: “Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn”. We anticipate breaking ground for the new Edmonds Waterfront Center during the
spring of next year (2018). Thus this year will be last year for the auction in
this building. I encourage you to come, have a great fun filled evening and
support this Center, which has supported all of us for so long.
INVITATION TO MAY 7TH WATERFRONT CENTER RECEPTION
FOR MEMBERS AND FAMILIES
Please also accept my personal invitation to attend a special reception for
members and their families on Sunday, May 7th 2:00-3:30 pm here at the
Senior Center. Mayor Garry Haakenson will be the MC for the program. This
is a chance for Center members and their families to learn more about the
project, its details and timelines, and how they might become involved. Many
children of our members know well how important the Center has been for
their parents and have expressed an interest in supporting the Center.
We are not expecting many people to do both, although Gary will be active in
each event. If you have the stamina, we would love to see you at both events.
TWO REMINDERS: HEALTHY LIVING FAIR APRIL 28TH & CAFÉ APRIL 29TH
Just two quick reminders for really special events at the end of April. The
first is our annual Healthy Living Fair, sponsored by Care Partners on Friday, April 28th, 10:00 am-2:00 pm. It is a great free event with over 60 vendors, a no-cost lunch from Fairwinds Brighton Court. Your participation
supports the Center in a very tangible way. Please come and bring a friend.
The second event is the Creative Age Festival Edmonds (CAFÉ) all day
on Saturday, April 29th beginning at 8:00am here at the Senior Center.
“CAFÉ” also stands for “Creative, Active, Fulfilled, Engaged”. Dr. Gloria Burgess provides the keynote, with a choice of 29 stimulating workshops throughout the day. See on-line program and registration at www.
ceativeagefestival.org.

“Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring,
patience, and just plain love for one another.” —Erma Bombeck
At Edmonds Senior Center we are blessed with wonderful volunteers. They make a difference and help to make our outreach to
our seniors vibrant. Without our volunteers, the time they dedicate, and the lives they touch, we would all be poorer.

THE VICE-PRESIDENT’S CORNER
THE PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE HAS BEEN GRAPPLING WITH SOME KEY ISSUES, STIMULATED
BY THE NEED TO PLAN FOR THE TRANSITION PERIOD AND THEN MOVEMENT INTO THE NEW EWC
BUILDING. INTERNAL SURVEYS ILLUSTRATE CLEARLY THAT OUR MEMBERS ARE QUITE SATISFIED WITH
THE CURRENT LINEUP OF PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES. WE HAVE BEEN ASKING OURSELVES WHETHER
THIS IS THE RIGHT MODEL TO ATTRACT THE BABY BOOMER GENERATION; AND ACTUALLY OF GREATER
IMPORTANCE, ONE THAT WILL PULL IN GREATER NUMBERS OF PEOPLE IN THE SAME DEMOGRAPHIC AS
OUR CURRENT MEMBERS. AS THE CHANGES PLAY OUT, WE WILL MOST ASSUREDLY RETAIN THESE CORE
PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES THAT MAKE US ONE OF THE MORE APPRECIATED SENIOR CENTERS IN THE
AREA. WE DO NEED TO GIVE SERIOUS ATTENTION TO BROADENING OUR OFFERINGS – AND TO THAT
END, WELCOME INPUT FROM OUR MEMBERS.
DO YOU HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS? IF YES, PLEASE TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO SPEAK WITH
MICHELLE BURKE, FARRELL FLEMING OR ANY BOARD MEMBER. WE WELCOME YOUR THOUGHTS.

Baptized Every Morning
Fri, May 19, 10:00am, Library
By Author: Bridget Clawson
Sign up: at the Front Desk
Author Bridget Clawson has published
her new book on Amazon, “Baptized
Every Morning: Guidepost, Sketchbook
and Journal on Living with Big Grief and
Loss”. “Baptized Every Morning” will
help anyone who feels lost to find their
own personal direction and truth. While
it was written to help a broader audience
than her first book, “The Widow
Lessons”, it can be used as a companion
for that book as well. However, it was
written foremost as a workbook for
people living with grief.
Bridget Clawson lost her husband of
thirty-four years in 2009. She was
the Human Resources Director for
Snohomish County for twenty-six
years. When she retired in 2016, she
wrote “The Widow Lessons” about her
experiences with grief and loss. Her
readers frequently expressed that her
book helped them, even though they
are not a widow. This feedback was
her motivation for her most recent
book, “Baptized Every Morning”. It is
a workbook for anyone learning to live
with life-changing grief.
Copies of the book are available for sale
at the event, with $2.00 donated from
each sale to the Senior Center.
If you would like to purchase the book
in advance of the event, you can do so
on Amazon.

Presenter: Mary Jo Kintor, Disaster Medicine Project
Sign up: at the Front Desk
Deadly viruses, terrorism, earthquakes, or other disasters are overwhelming to our medical system, depleting medical supplies, staff
and facilities, putting us in crisis. When we are unable to provide life saving care to everyone who needs it, how do we decide who
to treat, who not to treat, how to distribute limited supplies, medications, surgeries and other medical care? The answer? “Crisis
Standards of Care” (CSC) Our State is developing these “standards” which should reflect our communities’ values and priorities.
Come to this presentation, conversation and scenario discussion about CSC. Contribute your views and opinions.

EQUAL HOUSING
Nurse’s Column
Did you say, as I did, “Oh, thank
goodness spring is here!”? True
gratitude comes in all shapes
and sizes. It changes from day to
day and is unique for each of us.
The one constant is being aware
of what you HAVE, rather than
what you do not. Appreciating
the world around us is a skill to
be learned and incorporated
into daily living. Adopting an
“attitude of gratitude” means
taking the negative things and
challenging ourselves to find a
way to be grateful. Even if it is rain,
or arthritis, or weeds. Need some
inspiration? Watch the Louie
Schwartzberg TEDtalk “Gratitude”
on Youtube. It is well worth your
time.
