The Maine Civil War Trail
Americans, north and south, responded to
the demands of the conflict in similar
ways. Husbands, fathers and sons enlisted
in the army and navy, sometimes on
opposing sides. Women kept the
homefires burning while supporting the
troops as nurses, Sanitary Commission
workers and spies. Children did their part,
too, working on the farms and in mills
producing weapons, gunpowder, blankets
and the like. Some 70,000 Maine men
and an uncounted number of women
served on the battlefields. Thousands
more labored at home to provide for the
troops what the federal government could
not. The exhibits along the
Maine Civil War Trail tell their stories.

Removed from the battleground of the South, citizens of Maine
and the Kennebunks watched as their soldiers marched off to war.
Beginning with the Missouri Compromise in 1820, this exhibit
features the prominent ways in which Maine and the Kennebunks
played a part in the Civil War. The so-called “footnotes of history,”
the personal stories of love and loss, bravery and determination, and
war life at home and away are the focus of this exhibition, in which
visitors can expect to find period clothing, armament, furniture, and
the voices of local citizens – at home and away – defining everyday
life during the Civil War.

Private John W. Haley's detailed Civil War journal forms the
centerpiece of this exhibit, a collaboration between the Saco Museum and
the History Department at the University of New England. Born in
Biddeford and later in life the second librarian of the Saco Library - which
now houses his remarkable journal - John Haley's service in the 17th
Maine Regiment of the Union Army is captured in this moving and
engaging account of the nation's darkest days. This exhibit explores how
Saco-Biddeford residents experienced, visualized and remembered the
Civil War. From John Haley's journal, to letters from the battle lines, to the
fundraising activities at home, to the memorials to those who died, this
exhibit explores the penetrating experiences and pervasive memories of
the Civil War.

South Portland, (known as Cape Elizabeth in the Civil War,) was
home to two active military installations; Fort Preble was an active
military base where the 17th US Infantry was stationed; and Camp
Abraham Lincoln, later known as Camp Berry, was the mustering in
point for men enlisting in volunteer infantries from southern and
western Maine. The 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 12th, 17th, 20th, 23rd, 25th,

This traveling exhibition originated at the Norman B. Leventhal
Map Center at the Boston Public Library. It uses historic maps,
photographs, and prints to take a geographic and cartographic
approach to exploring and illuminating the causes of the Civil War,
the conduct of the war, and how the war has been remembered. It
includes a Maine section, drawn from the collections of Kenneth
Thompson and the Osher Map Library, that focuses on the state’s
physical defenses and the
wartime training camps.

Winslow Homer (1836–1910) first gained national recognition
for images about the Civil War that he produced while working as a
special artist-correspondent for the popular magazine Harper’s Weekly.
Homer took an unconventional approach to war reporting. Instead of
depicting heroic battle scenes, he humanized the war with pictures that
examined soldiers’ daily life in camp or the war’s impact on the home
front. This exhibition showcases Homer’s unique vision of modern
warfare and keen eye for social commentary through a selection of his
Civil War related works.

This Rebellion: Mainers and the Civil War
This exhibit presents personal stories about people from Maine
during the Civil War years. Included are soldiers such as John
Sheahan of the 1st Maine Cavalry, and Grenville Sparrow of the 17th
Maine, nurse Rebecca Usher, Sarah Sampson and the Sanitary
Commission, John Marshall Brown of the 20th Maine, as well as
those in Maine – including politicians advocating for peace, business
men profiting from conflict, families concerned about loved ones, and
others. Using letters, diaries, other documents, artifacts, and images,
Maine and the Civil War provides a diverse perspective about the war
and its impact on the people of Maine.

That Flaunting Rag: Maine’s
Maritime War Against the Confederacy
Maine’s valour and sacrifice in the epic land battles of the Civil War has
been well documented; ‘That Flaunting Rag!’ sheds some light on the more
obscure war against the Confederate sea raiders, which played out in an era of
clicking telegraphs as a maritime chess game of espionage, long distance
sleuthing, and diplomatic double-entendres. The ‘Battle of Portland Harbor’ is
also featured, in which the explosion of the highjacked Federal Revenue Cutter
Caleb Cushing stymied only the most obvious attempt of Confederate agents to
exploit the vulnerabilities of Maine’s long coastline, easily penetrated from
Canadian refuge. Also shown is Maine shipbuilding contributions to the war
effort, including the Bath-built ’90-day gunboat’ USS Katahdin, whose lengthy
service on the lower Mississippi included the interception of a herd of Texas
cattle intended for Confederate troops; less black and white (blue and gray) was
the intriguing complication of the Union blockade for Maine shipping interests,
which had long cultivated profitable relationships within Southern port cities.

Civil War’s Impact on Thomaston
The exhibit focuses on the ideological split between wealthy ship-builder/
owners and sea captains of Thomaston, who depended on free trade and had
personal relationships with southern plantation owners and the strong
nationalism and anti-slavery fervor of many in outlying areas. The severe
financial hardship of the war on this maritime community is told through stories
of confiscated or burned ships and a decline in ship-building. The exhibit also
follows the personal impact on a few Thomaston soldiers and their families,
drawing from personal journals and the Memory Volume of the P. Henry
Tillson Post of the GAR. Summer events will also include topical lectures by
local Civil War expert and author, Blaikie Hines.

The state of Maine played a vitally important role in the Civil War...
a complex story that has been explored and

Maine lead the nation
in shipbuilding and forestry products; her
rapidly expanding mills produced textiles
and footwear; her politicians held a great
deal of influence on the national scene.

Army of the Republic collected by veterans of the Civil War. It includes
portraits of the four generals from Rockland, two of General Jonathan Cilley's
uniforms, General Adelbert Ames's revolver, Springfield and Harpers Ferry
rifles, bayonets, a saddle and blanket from the war, a drum carried at
Gettysburg, and a quilt made from Union and Confederate uniforms. The
many books in the collection include Adjutant General's Reports, histories,
biographies, atlases of battlegrounds, rotogravures of photographs from the
war and bound copies of Frank Leslie's Illustrated magazine.
The John Perkins House in Mourning
The Museum’s historic John Perkins House is shown in mourning
in honor of a fallen soldier who has returned to his hometown to be
buried. Visitors are welcomed into the parlor to pay their last respects;

Bullets and Bandages
This exhibit explores the many aspects of medicinal practice
during the mid-19th century and focuses primarily on the difficulties
faced by the ill-prepared army medical establishment during the Civil
War. Understaffed, ill-supplied, and overwhelmed for the multitude of
casualties, doctors were forced to make changes to their standards of
practice including the scandalous addition of female nurses to attend
dressing wounds and bathing male soldiers. A special section of the
exhibit focuses on the medical and social aspects of amputation as it
pertained to battlefield medicine.

detachment of Maine State Militiamen in the summer of 1863,
perhaps the only Civil War “engagement” within the State of Maine
itself. Our exhibit pays tribute to local residents who enlisted and

the War years resulted in the loss of many of Bethel’s loyal sons, they
also witnessed the town’s development as an important inland Maine
center of commerce, industry and tourism.

The center of Bethel’s social and political life during
the Civil War, Pattee’s Hall at Bethel Hill village was
the site of numerous public gatherings, including regular
weekly meetings of the Ladies Union Aid Society.
These industrious ladies certainly produced large
volumes of supplies and not an insignificant amount of
money to support the Union cause.

The Maine Civil War Trail
The state of Maine played a vitally
important role during the 1850’s, 60’s
and 70’s. She led the nation in
shipbuilding and forestry products;
her rapidly expanding mills produced
a variety of textile items and footwear;
her politicians held a great deal of
influence on the national scene.
Indeed, Maine sent more men
per capita to the war than any other
northern state as well as an uncounted
number of women.
The state’s participation in and response
to the war is a complex story that now
has been explored and interpreted in a
collaborative fashion by the participating
Trail institutions in Maine.
