New Features
Type to Learn 4: Agents of Information has more than 100 lessons, 5
engaging, skill-targeted activities with each lesson, and 7 diagnostic,
formative, and summative assessments.
A diagnostic pre-test assesses students’ existing keyboarding skills
and places them at a certain lesson matching their abilities. The pre-test
also analyzes students’ starting speed and accuracy, setting personalized
achievement goals for the program.
New Foundation of the Type to
Learn™ Series!
Developed on a proven, research-based keyboarding curriculum
of sequential touch-typing instruction, Type to Learn 4: Agents
of Information builds critical 21st Century skills for all students
in grades K-12. The integrated cycle of review, demonstration,
practice, and assessment, with continuous reinforcement of home
row positioning, teaches proper fingering for each key with ample
opportunity for skills practice. The program emphasizes both
accuracy and words per minute speed, and provides each student
with individualized goals for success. This engaging new product
wraps keyboarding lessons into an intriguing world of adventure
and information, complete with exciting new activities and
redesigned student and teacher interfaces.
Learning is extended from the instructional lessons by 5
supporting practice activities. There is also a diagnostic pretest and formative assessments placed throughout the lessons.
Assessments analyze students’ accuracy and speed, setting and
adjusting achievement goals as the student improves. Lessons
also track students’ accuracy and speed and assign immediate,
individualized remediation where needed.
Teachers and parents will appreciate the real-time recordkeeping, including progress graphs and reports on lessons,
activities, and assessments. Teachers can analyze student errors
by hand, finger, and key to pinpoint problem areas. The new
parent report, accessed from the student login, allows parents to
track their child’s progress and scores throughout the program.
Available as either a CD-ROM product or as an internet
downloadable application, Type to Learn 4 can now be used by
students anywhere with an internet connection! Type to Learn
4 addresses an essential, life-long skill for students in today’s
technology-driven world.
Each keyboarding lesson includes:
• Home row reinforcement
• Warm-up exercise
• Review of previously learned keys
• Demonstration of new keys
• Practice exercises
• Testing
3D hand animation on a reference keyboard demonstrates
correct fingering for new keys and provides support when
incorrect keys are pressed.
If at any time the student performs below achievement
goals, personalized remediation content is automatically
provided, based on specific errors the student made. A short
Final Challenge quiz at the end of every lesson must be
passed in order for the student to progress.
Type to Learn 4 incorporates real-world
typing content that is age-appropriate and
cross-curricular, including:
• Historical documents
• Literature passages
• Frequently used Quick-blends
and Quick-words
• Original writing tasks
Formative assessments and a final summative
assessment ensure that students have mastered the keys
to that point and are ready to continue. Speed and accuracy
are analyzed and goals are increased accordingly.
An optional Top Scores list can
display students with the highest
accuracy and speed across a single class,
grade, school, district, or even all Type to Learn
4 web users.
NEW Internet
Enabled Software
Teacher
Management Area
Type to Learn 4: Agents of Information now offers a
web-enabled version that allows students to practice
from anywhere they have an internet connection.
The completely reorganized and enhanced teachers’ management area allows for
a multitude of customizations and settings. Select options for a class as a whole or
differentiate for individual students. Control various settings for lessons, activities,
and assessments, such as: turning the reference hand support on or off, allowing or
preventing activities before lessons have been completed and assessing students using
printed text or on screen text.
How it works:
• The user downloads the application once to their
local machine. From then on, the user launches
Type to Learn 4 right from their computer, NOT
from a website.
• An internet connection is needed so the
program can access the student’s data from
the Sunburst server.
Benefits:
• Sunburst hosted servers – we host the database,
so you never have to do any maintenance.
• The client application runs right on your local
hard drive, so you never have “lagging” from
streaming media.
• Sunburst can automatically update the product
for you, so you never have to worry about
system updates.
• Students can use their username and password to
log in from home and practice at anytime.
• Teachers enjoy remote access to reports from a
web browser, anytime anywhere.
New Spanish ESL content provides instructions, navigation, support, and reinforcement
in Spanish, while the keyboarding lessons themselves remain in English. This provides
valuable support to Spanish-speaking students as they learn to keyboard in English.
Type to Learn 4 has greatly improved accessibility options for visually and hearing
impaired users, such as: closed-captioning, text-to-speech, and enhanced font sizes
and colors.
Teachers can now add their own custom content for students to type and have it scored
automatically for accuracy and speed.
A new ergonomic feature periodically prompts students for a break and stretch, with
durations flexibly controlled by the teacher.
Reports
The reports area of Type to Learn 4 provides many different kinds of reports and graphs
showing student progress, achievements, and difficulties. See student scores on lessons,
activities, and assessments. Analyze student errors by hand, finger, and key to pinpoint
problem areas. A new parent report can be accessed from the student interface and
allows parents to track their child’s progress and scores throughout the program.
