HORN
A GLIMPSE
INTO THE
FUTURE
HORN 10-12 MAY 2017
TECHNOLOGY DAYS
PROGRAMME
There are eight exciting technical presentations and live demonstrations
waiting for you. We’re throwing open the doors of our production area.
Come and talk to our partner companies and learn about the current technologies involved in the production and processing of precision tools.
Our carbide manufacturing facility is also open for visits. Come and discover our state-of-the-art systems for the manufacture of carbides, as
well as various manufacturing processes from axial pressing to extrusion.
Daily open 8.30 am – 5.00 pm
Birgit Müller – contact person for our international guests.
[email protected]
Erich Kocher – head of maintenance staff. Mr Kocher takes care of the
supply and delivery as well as the commissioning of the machines that we
show at the Technology Days.

Lecture 1
ECONOMICAL TITANIUM MACHINING WITH HIGH-FEED MILLING CUTTERS
The milling of titanium presents significant challenges for the entire process. Among other things, the presentation shows
the results of the joint project “SchwerSpan”, which implemented user-oriented solutions to create a novel tool design.
Lecture 2
English: 09.15 am, Room E
Speaker: Chris Smith
TURBO AND ROTARY WHIRLING – REDEFINING THREAD CUTTING
The increasing economic importance of thread whirling means that it is necessary to rethink the process that has been
in use since 1942. Turbo whirling and rotary whirling are two new processes which bring about a significant increase in
performance in the production of threads.
English: 10.15 am, Room E
Speaker: Chris Foschaar
Lecture 3
PERFECT GEAR TEETH
Gear teeth can now be produced with a number of different processes. The optimal machining process is determined
based on the module size, the expected number of pieces and other conditions.
Lecture 4
English: 11.15 am, Room E
Speaker: Stuart Gill
TRENDS FOR GROOVING AND PARTING OFF
At HORN, we know that the tool plays a major role in the machining process. This presentation focuses on new grooving
systems for grooving and parting off. Learn how to use the latest technology in a versatile and high-performing way.
English: 12.15 am, Room E
Speaker: Ken Hamming
Lecture 5
MICRO-MACHINING ON LATHES – PRECISION LEADS TO SUCCESS
Micro-machining on lathes places high demands on the tool, machine and operator. The smallest feed rates, lowest
cutting depths and the highest surface quality require innovative tool solutions. The presentation demonstrates how the
combination of high-precision cutting edges, micro-grain carbides and innovative coatings fulfils the quality requirements
in the micro-turning range.
Lecture 6
English: 1.15 pm, Room E
Speaker: Michael Smoody
HIGH-PERFORMANCE MILLING SYSTEMS
Modern one-off and series production of different components places high requirements on the milling tools involved. In
order to be able to use high-performance milling systems in a long-term and stable manner, a large number of prerequisites are required. On the one hand, these include the basic geometrical concepts of the tooling systems, and on the other
hand, the important combination of the machine, workpiece and tool concept. This presentation provides an insight into
the conceptual design of milling systems and the resulting application possibilities.
English: 2.15 pm, Room E
Speaker: Alan Whalley
Lecture 7
COATINGS
The right choice of coating is a key factor in tool design. Depending on the application, very different requirements apply
to the machining process and therefore also to the high-performance coating of the tool. HORN provides an insight into
today’s highly complex coating technologies.
Lecture 8
English: 3.15 pm, Room E
Speaker: Steve Kilpin
PRECISION SINTERED INTERFACES OF CUTTING TOOLS
Based on the example of the HORN Interface with 120°-serration the lecture describes the requirements on form- and
dimensional tolerances of the carbide product plus the challenges in look of the high precision during the manufacturing
process of the sintered blank. Another aspect the lecture will address is the measuring of the free form surfaces with its
extremely high accuracy in the in the area of µm.
English: 4.15 pm, Room E
Speaker: Bob Kover
