Is there anything that can compare to the way music can move human hearts? A tune, a song, can lift our mood, reflect our sorrows, raise our passion, and focus our minds (well, that one is up for debate). Whether music plays a minor or major role in your life, it is one of the things which separates us from all other animals. So, go ahead, be human: hum, sing, strum, drum and dance your hearts out! impact her: slagkraft to lift someone’s mood å muntre noen opp / å muntre nokon opp to hum å nynne to strum å klimpre The Loudest Shadow 4 The impact of music 6 Band of hope 8 A bombing site became this conductor’s scene 10 Sing our own song 12 Music and homework 14 Music and personality 16 The Book Thief 18 3 THE LOUDEST TITTELSHADOW Getty Images / Fuse / Thinkstock The Loudest Shadow Music comes in so many forms. It can be hard, soft, loud, and mellow. It surrounds us all day long, even in the rhythms of our speech, the unintended rhymes. According to this young poet, music is the loudest shadow. Read his beautiful poem and feel the music: It begins as a noise in the background keeping steady beat as it makes its round it can be found at any time of day it’s so simple, just push play […] It lingers as if ready at any possible time to lift you off your feet and begin to fly away from all the grief, sorrow and pain to tell your mind that it’s free again No judging or casting a nasty glare nope, just to let you know that it’s always there as the shoulder to cry on when no one else cares and casts you alone to face all of your scares mellow rolig/roleg unintended ikke planlagt / ikkje planlagd according to ifølge/ifølgje a steady beat en jevn takt / ein jamn takt to linger å vedvare / å vare ved to cast a nasty glare å se stygt på / å sjå stygt på scares redsler fortsetter på neste side 4 THE LOUDEST SHADOW […] To be there for whenever you desire is its one purpose, to light your fire it can’t be stopped if the will is steady it can be unleashed, it’s always ready a purpose et formål / eit formål if the will is steady hvis viljen er sterk / viss viljen er sterk to be unleashed å bli sluppet løs / å bli sloppen laus To light up your day or slow down the time to yell at the world, or even to cry to help you with whatever you may need or just to be there for whenever you please It will live until the end of time serving its purpose, to let its light shine remember family, friends and even pets but most of all music never forget © Anthony LINKS http://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/the-loudestshadow#c37508 5 THE IMPACT TITTEL OF MUSIC www.peopleimages.com The impact of music People love music. They are inspired and influenced by it and that’s a fact! This includes famous people – take a look at what some of them have said. When we hear a song we enjoy, we want our friends to experience it too. But we don’t just have to share with our friends. High school students in the United States used music to connect with others and remove barriers of difference. Hopewell Junior High School’s Band of Hope once again brought its “power of music” to children with special needs who are patients at Pediatric Specialty Care of Hopewell. […] Band of Hope is an after-school music program open to seventhand eighth-grade band students at the junior high. When the group played on May 27 for about 20 children at Pediatric Specialty Care, it was the sixth concert the band had performed at the facility. The band members also host a story time for the patients and bring small instruments for them to play. Band of Hope was formed in January under the direction of band director Kerry Wilson. “I really want to teach them about the power of music and how much it affects people and connects everyone,” Ms. 8 special needs særskilte behov / særskilde behov Pediatric Specialty Care barneavdeling på sykehus / barneavdeling på sjukehus facility her: institusjonen to host a story time å arrangere en/ ei eventyrstund a band director en bandleder / ein bandleiar fortsetter på neste side BAND OF HOPE Wilson said of the Band of Hope members. “I thought it would be a great chance for the students to provide music-making opportunities to students who may not receive them. The band’s 27 members meet once a week for a two-hour practice after school. Each month, the band heads to Pediatric Specialty Care to perform a mini concert of popular music such as soundtracks from the movies Frozen and The Little Mermaid and hits by singer Katy Perry. Eighth-grader Liam Watters, 13, plays the baritone and said it was a love of music and the opportunity to give back to the community that drew him to join the band. During one concert, he learned that one of the patients likes to listen to singing, so he and a few other band members went back to the patient’s room and sang to him. “That was really cool,” Liam said. Maddi Maxwell, 13, plays the clarinet and said she wanted to be a part of the band because of her family’s involvement with special needs children. She said it was exciting playing for the children and their reactions were different from those of adults who listen to them perform. “They squealed and had big smiles on their faces,” she said of the children. She recalled one young boy who kept the beat during a concert with a balloon he was holding in his hand. Maddi came up with the band’s slogan: “Making a difference one note at a time.” Ellen Davis, 13, has played percussion since fourth grade and said music has been a good way for her to express herself. It also has boosted her confidence, she said. She joined the band with the hope that it would do the same for other children. “I thought it would be a really cool experience to see how music affects people and to see how it brings kids to express themselves in different ways, especially kids with disabilities,” she said. To the Iraqi people, shattered and torn by conflict for decades, music brings that sense of connection and an antidote to the brutality they witness. Can you imagine yourself there with them? “It’s a way of expressing my feelings,” he said. On May 2, 2015, two bombs killed about 20 people and injured dozens more in the busy Karrada district of Baghdad. Unfortunately, occurrences like this are all too common in the region, as are the feelings of fear, distress, and grief that linger. But what happened next in Karrada made this day quite different. A crowd began to form. People gathered with cameras and loved ones and allowed the power of the music to wash over them. Wasfi said this in an interview with Al Jazeera: “[People] loved it. Soldiers cried. They kissed, they clapped, they felt alive, they felt human and they felt appreciated and respected.” Some folks might wonder why this accomplished musician would sit and play music in such a place. Here is the answer he gave Al Jazeera: “It was an action to try to equalise things, to reach the equilibrium between ugliness, insanity, and grotesque, indecent acts of terror – to equalise it, or to overcome it, by acts of beauty, creativity, and refinement.” […] Isn’t that the truth? Music and art can transcend even the most awful situations to remind us of our humanity. Wasfi said he doesn’t want people of Iraq to only think of death on a daily basis, but rather to remember that life is lived every day. © Cloud Tiger Media. Used by permission. It can be used to shed light on injustice, inequality and cruelty. The song lyrics below were written by a British group called UB40 in 1986, as a protest song against apartheid in South Africa. Do you listen to music while completing homework? There’s an ongoing debate about whether listening to music while doing homework is helpful or unhelpful. Sarah and Esther are two 11th graders who disagree on the topic: Answer: No, never. Sarah Lucca Many students feel that listening to music while doing homework will help them work more efficiently. Unfortunately, music is a major distraction, especially music that contains lyrics. While doing homework and listening to music, not only is your brain trying to comprehend the words you’re seeing, but also the words you’re hearing. So just listen to instrumental music, right? Sadly, this won’t change that fact that listening to anything while doing homework is a distraction, which can cause you to retain less information. In the end, this can result in lack of knowledge and lower test scores. So the next time you sit down to do homework, it may just be best to do it in silence. 14 ongoing pågående / som går føre seg efficiently effektivt to comprehend å forstå to retain å bevare lack of mangel på fortsetter på neste side MUSIC AND HOMEWORK Answer: Yes, if it works. Esther Garcia Speaking from personal experience, I have found it very helpful to listen to music while doing my homework. Everyone learns differently, so the answer to this question is more complex than just a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Often, I find myself having to turn on music to be able to tune out other noise in my home. There are always members of my family home, and it is always quite noisy. Music allows me to focus more on my work. I have always received mixed reactions from my friends as well. Some say it is impossible for them to listen to music and do homework, but others would agree that it is difficult to complete homework without music. So should a student do homework while listening to music? Well-- that is completely up to the student, but I think there is no harm in trying! © Patch Media. Her brother is dead, her mother is gone and the Nazi-regime has a firm grip on the country. Hans and Rosa Hubermann, who Liesel now calls Papa and Mama, try their best to comfort and take care of Liesel. Money is short, war is close, and fear is in the streets. But the music is alive … […] Hans Hubermann sat sleepy-eyed on the bed and Liesel would cry into his sleeves and breathe him in. Every morning, just after two o’clock, she fell asleep again to the smell of him. It was a mixture of dead cigarettes, decades of paint, and human skin. At first, she sucked it all in, then breathed it, until she drifted back down. Each morning, he was a few feet away from her, crumpled, almost halved, in the chair. He never used the other bed. Liesel would climb out and cautiously kiss his cheek and he would wake up and smile. Some days Papa told her to get back into bed and wait a minute, and he would return with his accordion and play for her. Liesel would sit up and hum, her cold toes clenched with excitement. She would grin herself stupid, watching the lines drawing themselves down his face and the soft metal of his eyes–until the swearing arrived from the kitchen. “STOP THAT NOISE, SAUKERL!” Papa would play a little longer. He would wink at the girl, and clumsily, she’d wink back. A few times, purely to incense Mama a little further, he also brought the instrument to the kitchen and played through breakfast. Papa’s bread and jam would be half eaten on his plate, curled into the shape of bite marks, and the music would look Liesel in the face. I know it sounds strange, but that’s how it felt to her. Papa’s right hand strolled the tooth-coloured keys. His left hit the buttons. (She especially loved to see him hit the silver, sparkled button–the C major.) The accordion’s scratched yet shiny black exterior came back and forth as his arms squeezed the dusty bellows, making it suck in the air and throw it back out. In the kitchen on those mornings, Papa made the accordion live. I guess it makes sense, when you really think about it. How do you tell if something’s alive? You check for breathing.
