St Wilfrid’s CE Primary School At St Wilfrid’s, our Christian school exists to provide a welcoming environment in which everybody is cherished and challenged to fulfil their potential. At St Wilfrid’s we all Belong, Believe, Become 21st October 2016 What has particularly impressed me this week…… Our PTA Disc-Glo! Both events ran very smoothly, due to the meticulous organisation by the PTA to ensure the children had a great time. My thanks to the PTA for the organisation and running of these events—thank you. Also huge thanks to Ken our DJ for providing the music. The event raised £573.00. Fantastic! Parent Governor at St Wilfrid’s CE Today, your child will be bringing home some details regarding the vacancy on the school governing body for a parent governor. If you feel that you would be willing to stand for that position, could you please return your completed nomination form into the school office by Tuesday 1st November. On Tuesday 1st November 3.30pm – 7.00pm and Wednesday 2nd November 3:30pm – 5.00pm we will be holding our teacher – parents consultations. This will be an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher. There will also be an opportunity to look at your child’s work. All appointments (apart from Nursery) are arranged electronically via the school website (please see your parent mail sent Wednesday 19th October). This is a new system, which so far parents have reported on the simplicity of the new system and an efficient way to book, due to the instant e-mail response with date and time confirmation. If you are having any difficulties, please see the ladies in the office who will support you with this. It is essential you come and speak with your child’s class teacher to enable you to discuss your child’s progress. The children listened to a story about ‘Amazing Grace’ and the importance of having friends and the support they give, including family. Quotes shared with the children for celebrating friendships include: Christian values underpin all aspects of life in a Church of England school, with the British Values of Individual Liberty, Democracy, The rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs embedded into all aspects of school life and within the curriculum, teaching and learning. This half term our Christian value is FRIENDSHIP; the special relationship we have with certain people-a friend loves and cares for you at all times. Bible readings this half term which children will be looking at include: Luke 10, 29-37: Good Samaritan and Matthew 5-7: The Sermon on the Mount. This is supported by the British value of individual liberty. The children’s challenges this half term are: To listen to others’ point of view and work with others To think of others when I act To recognise right and wrong (and consequences) To push myself to achieve new things To do something to be proud of Award winners this week for meeting the challenges: R1KS: Charlie Coppock R2RM: Inioluwa Akintayo 1GA: Ollie Rydings 1JD: Abdullah Rehman 2SS: Emily Worth 2HD: Emmy Bradshaw 3RT: Ellie Eastwood 3/4MD: Ella Bradshaw 4AC: Faye Norton 5JB: Navpreet Kaur 5/6LV: Mason Whitby 6JG: Tom Devereux “If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.” Winnie the Pooh “A loyal friend laughs at your jokes when they’re not so good, and sympathizes with your problems when they’re not so bad.” Arnold H. Glasgow Trinity As explained last week, the children are learning about the Trinity. Last week I shared a Bible reading about God is Father. This week is God is Son: God is Son: John 1:1-4 clearly teaches that Jesus (the Word) was “with God” from the very beginning, and “was God”. That “all things were made through him…In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” (John 1:4) KS1 Trip to Northenden Methodist Church On Tuesday 18th the children in KS1 visited the Methodist Church in Northenden. This was linked to their History topic ‘What was Northenden like 100 years ago?’ The children enjoyed exploring old maps to locate familiar place names. They were also lucky to have a talk given by Mrs Rhodes, an 89 year old Northenden resident, who has lived in Northenden most of her life. The children were able to ask Mrs Rhodes lots of questions and listened to how life has changed over the years. KS1 would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Rhodes for sharing her time with them and also to Revd Tim for helping to organise the visit. Mrs Argles LUNCH BOX WASTE During the last couple of weeks, we are noticing more and more children not eating their sandwiches and children are throwing uneaten sandwiches in the bin. Class teachers have spoke individually to their children about this, but if your child does bring their own lunch to school, please have a chat with them to reinforce the message about the importance of eating a proper lunch. YEAR 5 AND 6 TRIP TO NORTHERN COLLEGE OF MUSIC Year 5 and year 6 visited the Royal Northern College of Music on Thursday as part of their celebrations of Black History Month. Here, they learnt about the origins of some popular songs of worship, including those originating from the time of slavery. They also learnt about the important role music has played in black culture throughout time. They listened to a very talented live band and choir. We all joined in the songs, with clapping, clicking and some funky dance moves! Thanks to all the parent helpers who came along to join in the fun. Miss Vermeulen Singapore Maths in Key Stage 1 Years 1 and 2 have been working on the Singapore Maths model now for the half term. The staff are thoroughly enjoying teaching this and Mr Goodwin is planning on carrying out a pupil voice activity with the children next half term, to focus on their achievement and enjoyment with this. Here are a few examples of work in KS1 over the first Autumn term. Detailed are some strategies you may wish to do at home with your child to consolidate. Please see your child’s class teacher if you would like further support or to ask any questions. Miss Deeley Adding tens and ones: By drawing a “tens rod” to represent the value of the tens and dots to represent the ones, children can add the tens and ones together. Adding tens and ones: By “bonding” together tens and ones after partitioning, children add tens and ones together. “Exchanging” tens and ones. Grouping ones together and exchanging the tens for a “tens rod” (stick). Solving real life problems: Here children are faced with real life problems. They tackle them according to which method suits the numbers in the calculation. ANTI-BULLYING COMPETITION: A huge thank you and well done to all the children in school who have thoughtfully considered our theme for this years Anti-bullying week: 'Power For Good' and created designs for the t-shirt competition. The creativity, talent and innovation the children put into their designs was fantastic and to a high standard, following the assembly to introduce this by Mrs Stevenson. The school council gathered together to choose the best design for each class that reflected the theme well and would stand out on a t-shirt. Congratulations to the following children: Reception1: Libby Smith Reception 2: Thomas Keogh Year 1D: Boaz Jones Year 1A: Hannah Oluleke Year 2B: Zuzanna Kaleta Year 2D: Amber Snelson Year 3: Lilia Owen Year 3/4: Macy Smith (Yr3) & Nathan McKenzie (Yr4) Year 4: Imogen Lynton Year 5: Esme Waddington Year 5/6: Lilly Jarratt (Y5) Chisom Otubelu (Y6) Year 6: Mwamba Bonifati We had to choose one design to submit to Manchester Healthy Schools to represent St.Wilfrid's. We will have to wait until after the holidays to hear this news. YEAR 2 CLASS ASSEMBLY Will be held on Wednesday 2nd November at 9.00am.
