As we begin this Lenten season, we as a church are being drawn back to what we believe as Christians, a church, and individuals through Sunday schools, sermons, adult confirmation class, and youth group. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: Ecclesiastes 3:3 Currently we have three teams that alternate serving funeral dinners. As time passes, the responsibilities in our lives change and we can no longer do those things we once did. We may need to care for our grandchildren or our spouse. People become ill or just age and retire to a nursing home. We are in need of a few good women (or even men) who could step in and help prepare and serve funeral dinners. If you could help please let the office know, 777-0125 or contact Irene Adkins, 777-1238. It’s time to order your The lilies will be used to decorate our sanctuaries on Easter morning, April 16th. We will be accepting orders through Palm Sunday, April 9th. Special Lenten Study Beginning on March 5th, we will be studying “Creed: What Christians Believe and Why” by Adam Hamilton. We’re all searching. Sometimes the search is easy: simply type a question and the answer pops up. But sometimes our questions are complicated, and the answers are difficult to see and harder to articulate. How do we discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life? Adam Hamilton believes that some powerful answers are contained in the Apostles’ Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs. In this book for Lent, Easter, and beyond, Hamilton considers important questions of life, reality, and truth. He explores not only what Christians believe, but also why they believe it and why it matters. Study books are $14.00 and you can pick them up in the church office. It’s time to start thinking about summer and the fun you can have at church camp. There are a variety of camps for folks from 1st – 11th grade. Our church offers scholarships that can pay up to $100 of the cost! The early bird deadline (to get the best price) is May 1st. You can register online at horizoncenter.org. “Mitch’s Musing” Where Is God In My Suffering? “It is normal to question and to doubt when you are hurting and feeling vulnerable. When this happens, you can look deeper inside, seek out the place of faith in your heart, and re-examine the promise given to you. God does not promise you will never suffer; life is joy and sorrow. However, God does promise to remain with you in your suffering. How can you reconnect to that invisible cord that binds you to God, even during times when God seems to disappear into the darkness? Here are some things I’ve learned about finding God in the midst of suffering> God cries with you in your suffering. God touches you through other people. God meets you in prayer. God helps bring meaning to your suffering. God doesn’t ask you to ignore or deny deep pain. God wants you to acknowledge it, and then to face it and ride it out! The only path to healing is by first feeling the hurt and then expressing it. And this can take time. Some of the pain may never go away completely. But it does get better with time. You do not suffer alone—God suffers with you. The community suffers with you. Sometimes we lose sight of the support and love that is around us. Sometimes it feels like God is distant or even absent, but if you quiet your spirit, you can begin to sense God’s presence again. God remains at your side always, ready to enfold and embrace you with loving and strong arms.” Several weeks ago, I preached about never getting any presents in January. At our Senior Moments gathering that week I was surprised by lots of gifts from the folks there! Because I had preached on the Holy Spirit as a Dove, I was given lots of bird stuff and even a bird feeder. Thank you so much for the gifts! They really made a difference in my January! Now we are entering March, and I’m hoping to see some more birds out there. As the promise of Spring looms closer (and I’ll admit it’s been pretty Spring-like this February) I am reminded not just about the renewal of creation, but also the ongoing presence of the Holy Spirit as we journey through Lent. It was the Holy Spirit that led Jesus into the wilderness for 40 days of prayer and contemplation. That same Spirit leads us through the days of Lent. In stark contrast to the beauty that will be budding all around us, we are asked to remember that we are but ash. That it is God alone who gives us life. May your Lenten experience be meaningful and reflective – and may the Holy Spirit guide you towards the promise of Easter. Pastor Mitch Excerpt from “Where Is God in My Suffering?” by Nancy T.
