An original 1916 Proclamation, the document which was read by P. H. Pearse from the front of the GPO, Dublin, at the start of the Easter Rising, has been on display in the Philatelic Shop of the Post Office for some years. While various reproductions are on sale in shops around the city, there was until now nothing available in the GPO itself for those who might want a souvenir of their visit to one of Dublin’s most famous buildings. An Post has now produced a fine facsimile of the Proclamation on display in the GPO. The poster size of 72cm by 48cm is just slightly smaller than the double-crown measurement of the 1916 printing and, retaining the creases of the original, folds down into a neat 24cm by 18cm. A short explanatory note by Stephen Ferguson, on the reverse of the poster, sets the document in context and outlines the complications that faced the printers as they worked in secret on an old press in Liberty Hall. Copies of stamps commemorating the events of 1916 and those who signed the Proclamation illustrate his commentary. 2009 Astronomy Réalteolaíocht Abhac Donn Brown Dwarf 2009 The UNESCO International Year of Astronomy was chosen as the theme for last year’s Europa stamps. Welcome to the second issue of The Collector for 2010 - another eclectic mix of historical and contemporary stories from the world of stamps for you to delve into. In this issue we cover a range of varied and engaging topics, including a feature on page 6 illuminating the mystical beauty of Irish high crosses, as depicted in four new stamps. We celebrate two of Ireland’s most enduring and classic children’s stories, Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince” and Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels”, in our Europa children’s book section on page 8. Continuing this literary theme, we feature a stamp commissioned to commemorate the centenary of award winning Irish language poet Máirtín Ó Direáin’s birth on page 10. On page 12, we pay homage to one of Ireland’s most accomplished and respected artists, Roderic O’Conor, and look at Ger Garland’s commemorative stamps depicting two of his most famous works. Two international humanitarians are the subject of new stamps featuring social activist Henry Dunant and Missionary of Charity founder Mother Teresa on page 14. Our final article focuses on the unique role of philately in times of war, including the various ways stamps have been used to commemorate great battles and significant wartime events. Finally, our ‘Last Chance Saloon’ section once again gives you the opportunity to add some amazing stamps to your collection that you may not have been able to get your hands on last year. I’m sure you’ll agree there’s great variety in our latest edition. Enjoy! Dotted across the Emerald Isle, High Crosses are free-standing Christian crosses made of stone and often richly decorated. Also known as Celtic Crosses, they were primarily created some time around the 8th or 9th century and used mainly as status symbols, meeting points for masses or parish boundaries. Most High Crosses have stone-carved panels illustrating biblical narrative scenes from the 6 Book of Genesis to the Last Judgment. The ring of a cross initially served to strengthen its head and the arms but it soon became a decorative feature as well. Like the Book of Kells, High Crosses are one of Ireland’s greatest contributions to art from the Middle Ages. Due to his upbringing in a small Irishspeaking community, he spoke only his native tongue until his mid-teens, when he left the island to work in a Post Office in Galway. While in Galway, he became heavily involved in Irish-language theatre through the Gaelic League. Around this time he also began to write poetry and used his own money to successfully publish two collections, Coinnle Geala (1942) and Dánta Aniar (1943). During 10 the next fifteen years, poems like Ó Morna agus Dánta Eile (1957) would firmly establish him as a truly gifted poet. Attractively simple in theme and language, his work has been praised for its capacity for acute observation and use of a simple vocabulary. His early years on Inis Mór heavily influenced his work with nostalgic recollections of the uncompromising landscape of the island. His poetry often depicted the desolation and cultural impoverishment of everyday life in Ireland and he would regularly talk of the erosion of values by modern urban society. He trained at both the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art (now the National College of Art and Design) and the Royal Hibernian Academy. In order to gain more experience he moved further abroad and studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, Belgium between 1883 and 1884. However, after arriving in France around 1892, Roderic fell in love with the country and remained there for 12 the vast majority of his painting career. While there, he became deeply influenced by the Impressionists, especially the landscape artists such as Pissarro and Sisley. The influence these other great artists had on his work was always adaptive rather than adoptive - his use of bold colours and combinations of them give his work a stamp of real individuality. By 1892 O’Conor’s interest in landscapes brought him to the Breton village of Pont-Aven. One, a businessman horrified by the results of war, the other, a young woman who answered the call of God to help those less fortunate. We celebrate both of these great humanitarians and the legacies they left behind them. Henry Dunant Born in Geneva in 1828, Henry Dunant was a Swiss businessman, social activist and founder of the Red Cross. During a business trip in 1859, he witnessed 40,000 soldiers lying dead or dying as a result 14 of the Battle of Solferino in modern day Italy. He organised the civilian population to provide assistance to the injured soldiers. He developed an idea for a neutral organisation that would exist to provide care to wounded soldiers and distributed it to many leading political and military figures in Europe. Due to ill health, he was moved to a hospice in 1892 where he died in 1910. Although unable to attend, in 1901 he won the first ever Nobel Peace Prize for his role in founding the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The postal systems of many countries have been used both to degrade the enemy and boost their own image. Propaganda Stamps During World War II, The Office of Strategic Services, a predecessor to the CIA, tricked the German postal service into inadvertently delivering anti-Nazi propaganda to German citizens through their mail. No detail was left to chance. Even the stamps themselves were used to publicise the Allies' message. One of the lasting images of ‘Operation 16 Cornflakes’ was the portrait of Hitler which the Americans replaced with one made to look like an exposed skull, changing 'Deutsches Reich' (German Empire) with 'Futsches Reich' (Collapsed Empire). Morale Boosting Stamps As well as attempting to lower the morale during wartime, stamps have often been created to boost patriotism. The Americans used their 3-cent ‘Win the War’ stamp, displaying an American eagle in a "V" for victory shape, to encourage victory against the Germans in World War II. Provisional Stamps If a situation arises where the regular supply of official government issues aren't available, local authorities use temporary stamps or stamp-like markings called provisional issues. Instead of being used countrywide, they’re usually limited to a certain location to meet postal demand. After the 1916 Easter Rising, sympathisers used eight ERIE PUIST (sic) stamps showing portraits of seven prominent leaders with a harp and shamrock. Occupation Stamps Occupation stamps, of which there are many examples, are issued by one nation for use in the region that is under their control. Given their very nature, both World Wars have thrown up hundreds of occupational issues for Europe. When Germany surrendered in 1918, the Belgians issued stamps for their reclaimed territories. And during World War II, Japan issued occupation stamps for more than 20 territories they were occupying. War is, of course, a tragic event, no matter where it occurs. However, the stamps that are created will help us remember the triumphs over adversity and never forget the sacrifices of those that fought to achieve them. This facsimile edition of the GPO Proclamation, on sale at €10, will be prized by all who would like to have their own copy of one of the most famous documents in Irish history.
