LORD MAYOR’S WELCOME TO THE
28th CORK FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Cork French Film Festival which is 28
years in existence and which brings the best of French
Films to Cork each year. The French Film Festival is well
established and a life part of the fabric of Cork’s Culture
and indeed plays a major role as part of Cork’s Festival
Calendar of Cultural events.
Nora Callanan
Festival Director
I would like to acknowledge the dedicated work of Nora
Callanan, President of Alliance Française de Cork, Film
Programmer Julien Planté and their Team, as well as the
many volunteers who work hard to make this event the
huge success it has become. It is a major achievement to
bring to Cork Cinematic events of the highest standard,
as well as many prominent film personalities from France.
Alliance Française de Cork must be congratulated for its
commitment to the Festival and for its outstanding work,
especially in this landmark year, celebrating 70 years
of fostering Franco-Irish Relations, French Language
and Culture in our City. Earlier this year I was delighted
to attend the award ceremony ‘Chevalier de l’Ordre
National du Mérite’ accorded to Isabelle Sheridan (On
the Pig’s Back) by the French Government, an award
Nora Callanan (CFFF Director) has previously received.
I am particularly proud to be associated with the
screening of HUMAN by the renowned Photographer and
Director Yann Arthus-Bertrand – Lord Mayor’s Screening
(free to the public). I welcome audiences of all ages to
enjoy this spectacular film.
The 28th Cork French Film Festival brings you a sensational
programme with a strong emphasis on contemporary French
Cinema, dynamic directing, a wealth of new releases, and
a host of up and coming new names from France.
A very warm welcome to Cork to all French Film Festival

another superb programme to light up the silver

We can look forward to a host of Premieres and Previews,

Jacques Cousteau’s life.
Also not to be missed the psychological thriller Moka,
In Bed with Victoria – a comedy à la française critically
acclaimed in Cannes, the evocative period piece Frantz,
as well as the exquisite Polina – a film about dance set
between Moscow and Paris. There is something for
everyone, including wonderful children’s animated films
– the acclaimed Moon Man, an adaptation of Tomi
Ungerer’s classic, and My Life as a Courgette, a charming

In addition to our film screenings at the Gate Cinema,
the Cork French Film Festival continues its enduring
link between Food and Cinema, with a number of
enticing culinary events. A sumptuous Candle-lit Dinner

on a true story about President Mitterrand’s personal Chef
at the Elysée Palace. In CIT, all chocolate lovers are in

paradise on earth. But Jacques, the father, is never

megalomaniac dreams of grafting gills to humans

Gabrielle (Marion Cotillard) comes from a small
village in the South of France, at a time when her
dream of true love is considered scandalous, and
even a sign of insanity. Her parents decide to marry
her to José, an honest and loving Spanish farm
worker who they think will make a respectable woman of her. Despite José’s devotion to her, Gabrielle
vows that she will never love José and lives like a
prisoner bound by the constraints of conventional
post-World War II society. That is, until the day she

There she meets André Sauvage (Louis Garrel), a
dashing injured veteran of the Indochinese War,
who rekindles the passion buried inside her. She
promises they will run away together, and André
seems to share her desire. Will anyone dare rob her
of her right to follow her dreams?
“Like a Madame Bovary updated to the 20th century,
Gabrielle (Cotillard) is a romantic country girl from a well-off

the caller was a girl who has been found dead,
and that the police have no way of identifying
her. Shocked and guilt-stricken, Jenny resolves to

with the traits of traditional detective drama, The
Unknown Girl is another characteristically engaging

astute and compelling investigation of personal

She is alone and lost. With nothing but fear and her

FEATURES
18.30, Thursday 9th March / Gate
Eva Husson’s intense, confident debut feature
follows the fortunes of a group of Biarritz highschool students after they start a private orgy
society. The teens seem to have created their own
earthly paradise of total liberation, but matters soon
prove more complex. Dazzlingly shot and the work
of a true stylist, Bang Gang on one level resembles
a French version of Larry Clark’s Kids, but with a
specifically female point of view and updated for
the age of internet sex and revenge porn. At once
celebratory, libidinously lawless and with an edge
of sober social critique, Bang Gang is one of the
most striking French debuts in ages – and is certainly
one of the most controversial.

Victoria
21.15, Thursday 9th March / Gate
Victoria Spick is a beautiful Parisian criminal lawyer in
her late 30s; sex-addict, workaholic, self-centered,

unambitious friend, David, her ex-husband and
Sam, a former drug dealer who she helped out of a

attempted murder by his girlfriend. The victim’s dog
is the only witness. Reluctantly, Victoria accepts the

Provocative, disturbing yet hopeful, the film features
standout performances and a gripping script.
“A shrewd look at the refugee crisis, and based on the reallife Zoe’s Ark controversy, Joachim Lafosse’s bitter drama
is about an NGO in Chad that crosses the line between

A Swiss mother who has lost her son in a car accident
decides to track down the French woman responsible

novel by Anglo-French writer Tatiana de Rosnay.
Emmanuelle Devos stars as the mourning motheron-a-mission, while co-star Nathalie Baye plays the
owner of the coffee-coloured car — from which the
film gets its title — that was involved in the hit-andrun accident. This is the kind of psychological thriller
that could have been written by Patricia Highsmith
several decades ago as it contrasts obsession and
revenge in a slow uncovering of the psyche of two
female leads. “A classy and classical psychological thriller, at various
times reminiscent of the works of Chabrol, Hitchcock and

The ever-prolific François Ozon makes a welcome
return with this richly-evocative period piece, set
in the aftermath of World War I. In a small German
town, a young woman named Anna mourns the tragic
death of her fiancé Frantz. Living with her departed
lover’s parents, Anna keeps to herself, until one day
she spies a mysterious man leaving flowers on Frantz’s

of her fiancé during his time in France, Anna finds
solace in the outsider’s memories of her beloved.

fight against climate change.

problems to worry about. Despite his Tunisian origins,
he is more concerned with being popular at school
than with politics. When he comes across a rally, his
