July 12, 2013 - Sherwood Forest Club

July 12, 2013
ACTIVITIES THANK YOU
The Activities Committee would like to
extend a HUGE thank you to Eddie Bradley, Jr.
for taking on the formidable task of chairing
Sherwood’s 4th of July festivities. He did a
fantastic job and everything was seamless.
Thanks also to the Hill Captains for organizing
the food, drinks, and decorations at the top of
every Hill.
--Activities Committee

SHERWOOD’S ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
The Activities Committee is sponsoring an
Antiques Roadshow this Friday, July 12th, at
7:00 p.m. in the Activities Room. Find out
GOLF CART DRIVERS
Sherwood Forest rules prohibit underage
children from driving golf carts, even if a parent is
in the cart with them. The Office and the Board of
Directors will be in contact with residents who
are reported to be violating this rule.
It is both Maryland State law and a Sherwood
Forest rule that Golf Carts may only be driven by
persons with a valid State driver’s license,
including all provisions and conditions of that
license.
what your family heirlooms and yard-sale
bargains are worth ! Todd Peenstra will be on
hand to offer free appraisals, consultations, and
advice on anything you might own including
furniture, glass, porcelain, paintings, silver,
bronze, coins, toys, documents, etc. Bring in
anything you are curious about and would like
Todd to examine. He is a nationally-known
antiques and art appraiser based in Annapolis
who specializes in personal property appraisals.
Instead of one-on-one consultations, Todd
provides a program that is audience-based.
Participants can bring up to 3 items to be
appraised – and there is no charge. Be sure to
come at the beginning because the show is very
lively, interactive and entertaining throughout. If
you have any questions, feel free to contact Todd
at (202) 557-5500. Or check out his web site:
peenstraappraisals.com. You can also call Daryl
Williams at (410) 849-2233 for more information
about the event.

SHERWOOD FOREST DOG RULES
In summary:
• During the summer moratorium (June
15th through Labor Day, inclusive) dogs
may not be walked on the roads
between the daytime hours of 8:30
a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
• Dogs are required to be on leash at all
times, including every area of the Forest
(inner and outer forest and the kennel
area).
• Dogs may not be walked on
recreational grounds. These include
the golf course, athletic fields (volleyball,
baseball, LAX) beaches, tennis courts,
Clubhouse grounds, etc.
• Owners must clean up after their dogs.
• The Board will strictly enforce dog rules.
TIPS FROM THE WATER COMPANY
Try to use automatic dish and
clothes washing machines with
full loads only. Even when the
machines feature short cycles,
you're being more efficient with your water when
there are enough dirty things for a full load.
Unscrew the aerators from your faucets every
now and then and clean them out with running
water. Be sure to hold them tight or put the plug
in the drain, so you do not lose any of the small
washers. These aerators trap a lot of bacteria and
rust and should be maintained.
TRADITION
If you enjoyed the “flash mob” teaser at the
Endowment Cocktail Party you will love the
show! Mark your calendars for Saturday, August
3rd when our Sherwood Players present their
version of Fiddler – Archer on the Roof! The
show is bound to sell out quickly so watch for
ticket sale hours on the Store porch.
The Evening will begin with a pre-show
cocktail hour on the Clubhouse Porch at 6:30.
The show begins at 7:30 in Stewart Hall and
minus the applause should run about an hour.
Join the Cast and Crew in the Dance Hall
following the show for our Cast Party featuring
beer, wine, lite fare and autographs!
Tickets are a bargain at $40.00 per person.
CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE OUT TO
SHEROOD FOREST ENDOWMENT
please.
Checks for the show can be dropped off
at the Gardner’s - 330 Thorsby Hill or the
Club Office. PLEASE indicate that your
check is for the show….not a direct donation
(although those are always welcome!)

MARRIED-SINGLE SOFTBALL
Last week on the 4th of July we had a great
game between the Marrieds and Singles out on
Pfautz Field. We had over 30 players come out
and a large number of spectators as well. The
Singles were once again victorious by a score of
18-11. We thank everyone for their support of
the game as we seek to continue a great
Sherwood tradition. Special thanks to Terry
O’Donovan for umpiring as well as Mr. Moulden
and the Camp Program for providing
equipment. We will play again on the Sunday
after Corn Roast, July 28th, at 11 AM and look
forward to an even better turnout!
Thanks,
--Eddie Bradley III

MIXED DOUBLES TENNIS RESULTS
Chris Kenney and Sydney Hall defeated Lee
Murray, Jr. and Mills Hook Dancy, 6-3, 7-6, for
the mixed doubles tennis trophy on a sweltering
Sunday, July 8. The final match, featuring power,
consistency and shot-making from both teams,
was well played from start to finish.
It was the first time that any of these young
players had reached the final of this tournament.
Chris, our reigning men’s singles champion, had
never played in the mixed doubles tournament
and Sydney, at 17, was playing in her first
Sherwood Forest Club adult tournament. You
can be sure this won’t be the last time we see
these four finalists going far in the mixed doubles
tournament.
We thought Syd might have been the
youngest-ever mixed doubles winner, but a
glance at the record book shows that her father,
Todd, was four months younger when he took
home the mixed doubles trophy for the first time
in 1980.
In the semi-final matches, Murray/Dancy
prevailed over Andrew and Julianne Bing, 5-7, 76, 6-1, while Kenney/Hall defeated Dave Kenney
and Susan Fitzgerald, 6-2, 6-2.
In the First Flight finals, Bill and Katie
Monaghan defeated Eddie Bradley III and Daryl
Williams in a hard fought 6-1, 6-3 contest.
The 25 teams competing in the
Championship and 17 teams in the First Flight
brackets made this one of the largest draws ever.
The competitive play and good sportsmanship of
this first tournament of the season shows
Sherwood Forest tennis is off to another strong
year.

FATHER/DAUGHTER AND MOTHER/
SON TENNIS TOURNAMENTS
Another Sunday afternoon found two
parent/child doubles tournaments in action.
During the tournaments comments like "nice
shot," "consistency," "yours honey," could be
heard.
In the first tournament last minute father
duties kept the draw short but not the shots or
action on court one. After a long battle the
father/daughter team of Jack and Niko
Whiteford came out on top against the team of
Blair(Jr.) and Emma Hall. The score was 7-5, 6-2.
Great match!
The second tournament of the day was the
Mother/Son tournament.
When all play was complete, in the "Stars"
division, the team of Jeanne and Luke Egan came
in first place edging out the team of Deb and
Lachlan Hertel by two games. Congratulations!
Also competing in the "Star" division were
the teams of Anne Marie and Kevin Kirlin,
Kathy and Conner McMahon, Katie and Patrick
Devitt, Judi and Liam Herishen, Phebe and
Zander King, and Lorena and Clark Wishard.
Awesome play!
In the "Stripes" division first place went to
the team of Julianne and Josh Bing with 14
games won. In second place with 10 games was
the team of Downey and Michael Hinrichs. Also
competing in this division were the team Karen
and Riley Herron, Kristen and Nate Krall, and
the team Lisa and Chase Ritchie. Excellent shot
making!
Our last parent/child tennis tournament will
be held on Sunday July 28th at 2 p.m. Sign up at
the tennis shed.

ADVISORY: NATURE & ENGINEERING
CODES
All Camp families are encouraged to study
the fine print of the attached Camp schedule.
Please pay particular attention to the detailed
nature & engineering codes found on the
schedule.
Nature-W means wet - which means
swimsuit and shoes, preferably Crocs or old
sneakers with socks. Laced sneakers do not get
sucked off in the shallows of the river and socks
stop chaffing when shoes fill up with sand.
Nature-LP means long Pants. Long pants are
needed to avoid scratches from deep forest
movements. Campers are encouraged to bring
shorts to change into later. Finally, Nature-M
means muddy. Moms and dads this means
Jurassic Park quality mud. Nature-M dress is old
clothes and old sneakers with socks. Please be
assured that prior to these outings your child’s
shoes will be duct taped on to avoid loss,
however, anything white will forever be shaded
to a patriotic navy grey. These same specialty
codes apply to engineering as well.
If you have questions, we have answers.
During Camp hours feel free to call the Camp
Office at: 410.841.6612. After-hours do not
hesitate to call me directly at my home:
410.849.2820. Calls accepted 24/7.
Sincerely,
--Billy Moulden, Camp Director

High value items can be recovered from the
Camp Office during normal Camp hours.

TALENT SHOW MOVED TO AUGUST
8TH
Please be advised of a Camp schedule
change. This year’s Talent Show has been
moved from August 7th to August 8th.
TURTLE RACING RESULTS, 4TH OF
JULY
SHERWOOD FOREST, MD. – A record
field of 137 turtles posted for the 65th Sherwood 4th
of July Turtle Race, known among the Forest’s
Turtle People as the Run For Freedom.
While these “all-sorts competition (sans
one)” entrants were dominated by both the
Eastern and Ornate Box Turtles (truly tortoises),
there was a sprinkling of Wood Turtles, along
with a superlatively sized Red-Eared Slider. This
year’s youngest turtle entrant was 3 years old, the
eldest 108. Nature note, the average life-span of
a box turtle is 100. The oldest recorded Eastern
Box Turtle (most common turtle in Sherwood)
lived to be 138.
In this year’s 4th of July Sherwood classic the
track was soft and slow. Racing analysts agree
that winners and those who placed ran a steady
deliberate pace and did not shrink at the finish
line populated by so many cheering and animated
young fans. Complete racing results are attached
at the back of this edition of the Green Sheet.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Everyone is reminded to return their turtle to
their point of capture.

CAMP SENIORS
The Seniors can’t believe that we are already
halfway through our Sherwood Forest Summer.
We hosted two events this week, a bake sale at
the Relay Carnival and a merchandise sale at the
Summer Boutique. We were also able to visit
7
Parson’s Island. In short this week was bursting
at the seams with fun.
We would like to thank Mrs. Fernandez and
Mrs. McCormick for helping to organize the
bake sale at the Relay Carnival on Tuesday. We
would also like to thank everyone who came to
cheer on Sherwood and sample the Senior’s
cuisine.
The Seniors had a blast at Parson’s Island on
Wednesday and it wouldn’t have been possible
without the help of Mrs. Van Slyke and the
parent drivers. We would also like to thank the
Corckrans for generously hosting us. But let’s get
real. This article was due Tuesday at 4 p.m., and
as of now I have not been to Parson’s Island so I
can’t say anything too descriptive. I have heard
rumors that Mr. Moulden will be feeding us
alligator.
We had a great time at the Summer Boutique
selling our Sherwood Gear as well as shopping a
bit ourselves. Mrs. Pels and Mrs. Abbott deserve
a round of applause for all their help with our
booth. Even though we sold out quickly on the
Fourth of July, the Seniors hope that everyone
was able to find their favorite items.
Look forward to a Senior Dance on July
26th. Theme to be announced.
What an awesome First Half of Camp! The
Seniors are pumped for Second Half and hope
everyone has a great Break Week.
