Great Opening Lines in Literature Creative Writing Seminar
High school students in Grades 9-10 recently completed an assignment in their Creative Writing
Seminar we thought we would pass along to you. They were asked to share what they consider to be
great opening lines in literary works and why. Here are some of their responses:
“In sooth, I know not why I am so sad.” (Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice)
This opening line grabs my attention in a deep way. It mainly stirs up a sense of wonder
and curiosity. The reader wants to read on to find out why this character is sad, and why
he himself is confused about his feelings.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune
must be in want of a wife.” (Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice)
This is one of my favorite openings, not only because I happen to be partial to Jane Austen, but as I read this line, a
million different thoughts rush into my mind. For example, you can immediately see her witty humor, for this statement was quite the opposite of what was clearly the truth when she was writing this book. Women often wanted a
husband in possession of a good fortune, and some still do today. It also makes you curious as to why she is saying
this is true, and how it ties into the story.
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit)
I doubt I even needed to write what book this opening line is from because it is very famous today. This memorable
line grabs my attention not just by filling me with wonder, but also because an unusual character is introduced. It’s
not often you hear of hobbits, and it made me long to read of this unique hobbit who, no doubt, must have an interesting story. [Another student: This beginning is intriguing because it is strange. What on Earth is a hobbit? And
why does it live in a hole?]

PSAT BOOK CAMP: Strategies & Practice
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT), also called the National Merit Qualifying Scholarship
Test (NMSQT) is a test that helps students prepare to take the SAT. It also enables
students to enter the National Merit Scholarship Competition. The vast majority of
the approximately 3.5 million students who take the PSAT each year are juniors;
however, we are encouraging freshman and sophomores - and, yes, even our 7/8th
grade students if they are interested - to get the feel of the test prior to that time. This
program, which we are calling "PSAT BOOTCAMP", will begin later this spring
and will consist of a series of after school sessions designed to help students prepare
for this and other important standardized tests. Catholic homeschooling families expressing interest in having their upper school-aged sons/daughters participate will be
invited to join us in this important college preparatory experience. Details will be
coming soon.
