Our New Home
BUILT TO LAST–AT LONG LAST! Schechter Manhattan
is proud to announce the opening of its new home at
805 Columbus Avenue (at 100th Street). For the first time,
the school has a home of its own, in custom-built space,
with bright, airy, large classrooms. After fourteen years of
sharing space with local synagogues, Schechter Manhattan
has literally come into its own!
Our new home at 805 Columbus Avenue has been a
labor of love for many people over the last few years. Most
notably, we’d like to recognize the following individuals and
their families for their monumental contributions of time,
energy, and resources to this project:
Jay Palmer, who led the real estate search and
then lovingly oversaw every nail, brick, and bulb during
construction. This project would not have been possible
without his fabulous energy, meticulous attention to detail,
and dedication above and beyond the call of duty.
Howard Rubin, who chaired the Capital Campaign
that made this project possible. Howard has been tireless
in leadership, and he has been the very best friend our
school could have.

served as Presidents of the school during this project: Robin
in the search and negotiation phases, and Jane in the
construction phase. Each has left her distinctive imprint on
our new home, which constitutes a legacy not only to the
Schechter community, but to New York’s Jewish community
as a whole, of which each can be proud.
Henry Glanternik, who carefully and patiently
managed critical parts of this project. From negotiation to
construction, Henry made sure that the school’s best interests
were met at each turn. We are grateful for all of his help.
Daniel Bernstein, whose hard work and generosity
in the construction phase took our carefully laid plans and
made them into a real campus. Dan approached the job
as a labor of love, and his leadership of the build-out has
resulted in enhancements both functional and aesthetic
that we had never anticipated and that will benefit our
students and teachers for many, many years to come.
And all of you! Many members of the New York
community joined in with the Board of Trustees, parents and
other friends of the school in making our new home possible.
It is our pleasure to recognize and thank all those who
helped turn what was once a dream into a beautiful reality.

Dear Friends,
MAZAL TOV TO ALL—our new, beautiful campus is now a reality at 805 Columbus Avenue. This is an historic
accomplishment for our school and our community, which is to say, for all of us!
The 2009–10 school year—the subject of this Annual Report—was noteworthy for many reasons, foremost
among which are the following:
• Our first graduates, the Class of 2006, were graduated from high school and are off to an impressive selection of
colleges and universities.
• At the same time, our most recent graduates, the Class of 2010, did themselves proud, gaining entry into the top
public, private, and Jewish high schools in New York City, adding to the list of schools to which our previous graduates
had been accepted.
• A major gift from the Gottesman Fund was pivotal in making our new campus a reality.
• 88% of our families contributed to the capital campaign, helping to make our new building a true community-wide effort.
At Schechter Manhattan, we gauge our successes not only by our students’ stellar achievements, but also by the
power with which they learn. The past year was yet another year of strong, effective, and joyous learning. From our
kindergartners’ author studies in which they mastered the use of similes in their own writing to our sixth graders’ use of
coordinate geometry to solve algebraic word problems, from our fourth graders’ extended observations of darkling beetles
to our eighth graders’ sonnets in Shakespearean rhyme scheme, from our first graders’ collaborative categorization of
the blessings of the Amidah to our seventh graders’ shared meaning making of Talmud through chevruta (paired partner)
study—in every grade, in every subject, our students were active, resourceful, skilled learners, all year long.
Our most momentous development of the past year, however, is our new home. While the report on how we made the
most of the new possibilities of learning and community-building in our new digs will have to wait till next year’s
Annual Report, this report records and celebrates the groundwork that was laid, the funds
that were raised, and the construction that was begun in 2009–10.
After you read this report, I welcome you to come visit us in our new home—
805 Columbus Avenue, at 100th Street.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Steven C. Lorch, Head of School
