Assessment
Assessments like last year will be based on the end
of year expectations.
I have included the Maths and English ‘Key
Performance Indicators’ (KPI’s). These are the main
targets for the children to achieve during the year.
You will receive this as a handout at the end of the
meeting.
English

English will be blocked into 2-3 week learning journeys,
which will lead up to a short assessment at the end of the
learning journey.


Maths
Read, write and compare numbers to 1 000 000
Interpret negative numbers count forward and backwards including through 0
Add subtract 4 digit numbers using formal written methods.
Use rounding to check answers
Solve multi-step addition and subtraction problems.
Identify multiples and factors including all factor pairs of a number
Multiply and divide 4 digit numbers by 1 and 2 digit numbers.
Compare and order fractions whose denominators are the same.
Convert between different metric measurements (kilometre – meter)
Use all 4 operations to solve problems involving measure (for example, length, mass ,
volumes , money)
Complete, read and interpret information in tables.

Oxted School runs and organises various trips and educational activities
for year 5 children.
Science Fair

Maths Sessions
Most of these sessions take place at Oxted school and transport is
supplied by the school. Your permission is required for your child to
travel on the Oxted school minibuses – see letter.

PE
PE will be on a Monday afternoon and Thursday afternoon.
After receiving feedback from the parents last year, we are
now going to be teaching PE in 4 week blocks which will lead
up to sports competitions with the local schools.
On Mondays the PE lesson will have a skills focus and
Thursdays lesson will be more games focused.
Our first PE block will be Quick Sticks.
Homework
Each Friday the children will be sent home with their homework.
From this week onwards spellings will be sent home as well these will
be tested on a Thursday.
Building Learning Power
After Introducing the children to
Building Learning Power last year,
this year we will be embedding it
to all aspects of learning.
The children will be made aware
of where and when they are using
these learning powers.
Over time the children will
become better learners as they
will understand the skills
involved in learning.
Developing growth mind-set
Linking on to the BLP, I will be trying to
develop a growth mindset within the
children.
This growth mindset is all about changing
negative thoughts into positive thoughts.

Ensure children are completing their homework.
 Practise Times Tables
 Work on the 100 words children should know by the end of year
6 (in handout)
 Mathletics – passwords to be given out.
 Read with children – Books – Fiction / Non-fiction,
Newspapers, magazines, etc….



Games at home, Yahtzee, Cards, Cribbage, Boggle, Scrabble,
Rummikub, Monopoly (if you have the time) Connect 4 ,
Ticket to ride. Dominos.
Communication: Encourage your child to come and talk to one
of the Year 5 team if there is a problem. Giving them
ownership when solving a situation is incredibly empowering.

The quickest and best way to get in touch is through the
children’s homelink book as these are checked daily and will
be responded to in writing or in person the same day.
