There are new courses to expand your skills including: Printing with Paper Pulp (page 3) and Design for Digital Screens (page 5). We also have two enticing Craft Sundays including a beginner’s guide to contemporary quilting and the return of the ever popular Christmas Crafternoon (page 6). Our print facilities are world-class, and include state-of-the-art equipment that you can learn to use. We also offer one-to-one tuition: ask a Print Studio staff member for more information. Courses are for beginners unless otherwise stated, and we provide all materials. You’ll get one complimentary day’s use of the Print Studio facilities with every course and full day class times allow for lunch breaks. Bring a photo of your family or favourite pop-idol to work from. Japanese Brush Calligraphy An introductory one-day workshop Sun 23 November 10:00–18:00 £65 (£45) Gain an insight into the ancient art form of ‘Shodo’, the ‘Way of the Brush’ with artist Campbell Sandilands. Experience an ink grinding meditation to centre and still the mind. Experience drawing a Zen circle, draw numerous characters using different styles of calligraphy, and explore the use of various kinds of brushes. Introduction to Papermaking Sun 30 November 11:00–18:00 £65 (£45) Make delicate, colourful hand-made papers from pulp. Learn simple techniques suitable for using at home, such as how to create a smooth surface texture for printing on, soaking and blending recycled papers and painting with coloured pulp. Add decorative materials to make striking designs and create your own watermark. NEW Printing with Paper Pulp Sun 18 January 11:00–18:00 £65 (£45) Use coloured paper pulp to make prints from simple drawn or photographic stencils without inks or paint. The final effect is an intriguing image which becomes part of the paper. Shadowgraphs Sun 25 January 11:00–18:00 £30 Learn how to master this fascinating technique that uses objects and light rather than a camera to make a ‘photogram’ image with a rich threedimensional quality. Taku-hon – Japanese Stone-rubbing Sat 31 Jan & Sun 1 February (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £85 (£65) Discover what is possibly the oldest printing method in the world, Taku-hon was invented in China and Japan to create positive prints of memorial texts, and textured and patterned surfaces. The results can be subtle or bold, monochrome or many-coloured allowing for the possibilities of deep-embossing and sculptural printing. Bookbinding from Tokyo to Timbuktu Sat 7 & Sun 8 February (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £85 (£65) Learn to make a selection of unusual yet simple books based on ancient bookbinding traditions that span two continents from Asia to Africa. Argyrotype Sat 14 February 11:00–17:30 £30 Create atmospheric ‘Van Dyke brown’ prints using one of the earliest photographic printmaking processes. Bring along a photograph or negative. Cyanotype Sun 15 February 11:00–17:00 £30 Create striking blue prints using one of the earliest photographic printmaking processes. Bring along a photograph or negative. Japanese Woodblock Printing Sat 21 & Sun 22 February (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £115 (£95) Step back in time into the intriguing world of Japan’s Edo Period, and gain an insight into the mysteries of ‘Ukiyo-e’ woodblock prints, ‘Pictures of the Floating World’. Artist Campbell Sandilands will share his personal accounts of studying this time-honoured technique with the famous Yoshida family in Tokyo. Learn how to prepare and cut woodblocks. Using eco-friendly techniques, apply water-based pigments to the block, and print the hand-made Japanese paper with the baren, a handburnishing disc, in creating your own prints. Mounting and Framing Sat 28 February & Sun 1 March (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £85 (£65) Cut your own mounts and make your own frames, using conservation methods and materials in this introduction to mounting and framing. Learn techniques which are suitable for framing your prints and photos at home. Bring an item to frame under A4 size. Wood Engraving with Beth Robertson Sat 7 March & Sun 8 March (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £85 (£65) A form of printmaking that uses fine engraving tools to create small, finely detailed designs. Etching (Beginners) Tue from 3 February (six week course) 18:30–21:00 £95 (£75) Create beautiful, traditional prints using metal plates with acids to produce finely drawn and richly textured images. No experience necessary. Blue Sky Photo Club Mon from 23 February (eight weeks) 18:30–21:00 £75 Get the most out of your (mostly digital) camera through a series of projects, lectures and hands-on workshops with photographer Ross Fraser McLean. Working in a larger group, these lively and social sessions include demonstrations, skill sharing, visiting specialist talks and group exercises and shoots. Create a short film and learn the basics of making professional-level video projects. Bring your own footage (on Mini DV tape) or use material provided. Course covers different file-formats, exposure, white balance and ISO settings. New Digital Courses Illustrator for Beginners Sat 22 & Sun 23 November (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £95 (£75) This workshop will begin with the complete basics and have you producing beautiful visuals in no time. It is aimed at those with little or no experience of Adobe illustrator. The workshop will show you how to set up files, create artworks using lots of techniques and output your designs. Design for Digital Screens – How to Design Websites Sat 24 & Sun 25 January (two day course) 11:00–18:00 £95 (£75) Designing for anything that has a screen – mobile, desktop, smart watch etc. This workshop will give you a grounding in the basics of digital design, and associated jargon. A knowledge of Adobe Creative suite helpful but not essential, the workshop does not require computers. Christmas Crafternoon with bunty, bella and Friends Sun 7 December 12:00–17:00 £20 bunty, bella and friends are back for their annual festive “crafternoon”. Take your pick from a bunch of techniques including paper cutting, stencilling and sewing. Make decorations, wrapping paper, cards, tags and gifts; enjoy a sweet treat, some Christmas tunes and leave feeling all prepared for the festive season. “Fat Quarters and Feed Dogs” A beginner’s guide to Contemporary Patchwork and Quilting Sat 21 & Sun 22 February 2015 12:00–17:00 £50 Sandra Cassidy of Ruby Loves Red joins us for our first ever Craft Sunday weekend. Over the two days, Sandra will show you how to design your patchwork, position your fabrics, sew it up and quilt it. A basic knowledge of sewing is required but the class is suitable for complete beginners in quilting – if you can sew a straight line on your machine you can do this! You will need to bring a sewing machine and a selection of suitable fabrics. Advanced Point and Click: Night Time Photography Mon from 17 November (four week course) 18:00–20:00 I £36 Over the four weeks you'll gain confidence using your camera on manual settings. We'll look at shutter speed, aperture, composition, how to use different techniques and viewpoints to create good images, tackle Photoshop editing and image enhancement. An action packed course! Super Stencil Selfies: Draw, Stencil and Print Large-scale Portraits Tues from 18 November (four week course) 18:00–20:00 I £36 Inspired by modern portraiture and work by artists such as Julian Opie, Banksy, Andy Warhol, Sarah Lucas, Stephanie Thieu and Swoon, you will create large scale images based on a portrait or self-portrait working from drawing, into stencil or papercut and finally into print. Get Set, Draw: Hand-drawing Techniques and Weekly Projects Mon 19 January (six week course) 18:00–20:00 I £48 Kick start your art skills with our professional artists and have fun with weekly projects exploring all kinds of drawing techniques. You’ll cover still life, figures, tonal work, abstract work, projection and performance drawing with a display of your amazing results on the final week. Alternative DIY Jewellery: Turn Everyday Materials into Unique Wearables Mon 2 March (four week course) 18:00–20:00 I £36 Work with local maker, Syrah Jay, to create vibrant new jewellery from household and DIY materials.
