ANDREW DUNNAGE
marine coatings technician
A
ndrew is one of the
marine industry’s
new breed of ‘technical’
craftsmen - and enjoys
the much more scientific
approach to the traditional
skill of painting.
He began his career
in 1997 with a general
boatbuilding apprenticeship in the workshops
while he did 3 years
studying at IBTC, Oulton
Broad and a further 2 years
at Lowestoft College.
He qualified in 2002
with NVQ and City &
Guilds skills including
laminating, woodwork,
painting and varnishing
- where his expertise
and interest has really
developed.
Appliance of Science
Andrew explained how
advanced the new coating
systems have become:
It’s in the blood
Andrew is Ipswich
born and bred and
his grandfather was a
traditional yacht painter.
He was responsible for
aiming the youngster at
the marine industry.
Andrew has recently
bought a house in
Ipswich and for the
moment, confines his
water-borne activities
to high speed wakeboarding.
Someday however,
he wants to learn to sail.
It looks like painting but not as we know it.
A
s a first boat, this
powerful, ‘official’
looking motor
yacht was perhaps an
unusual choice - with
450 hp on tap and a
displacement approaching 9 tonnes.
But when the owners,
David and Christine Allen
saw Sindur IV on the
Hamble, it was love at first
sight and exactly the sort
of ‘go-anywhere - in style’
classic motor yacht they
wanted. A deal was struck
and Sindur IV began her
second life.

known for its excellent
sea-keeping qualities, had
actually ceased production
in 1977, but Northshore
moulded a final one ten
years later for a client who
would settle for nothing
less. Uniquely, this boat
had been fitted out by
Camper & Nicholson, so
the joinery was to their
usual very high standard
and needed little work.
The boat was sound,
but very much in need of
the kind of custom refit
that was firing David’s
imagination. After long
discussions with Jonathan
Dyke, a no-compromise
plan was agreed to return
her to sparkling, ‘as-new’
condition.
The truth is that she is
now - 12 months later - of
a higher standard than

by Wavelength Marine of Bursledon, Hants.
Her owner, Brian Wilkinson, very much had in mind
a boat based on Metre Yacht lines and dynamics, but
with the beam and deep hull power to produce
outstanding, 21st century performance.
In line with our history of working with the world’s
leading designers, Rig Magic were invited by Stephen
Jones to develop the design of the all-carbon rig which
- as well as being predictably light - was also very tall
(see right). The spars were manufactured and custom
painted by Nordic and installed at Hamble Point in
August. On sailing trials in the Solent, “Elle” was
tracking upwind at 8.5 knots in 12 k of breeze, and
delighting her owner on all points of sailing.

A surprising number of boats still do not
have a DSC VHF. It will soon be the law!
It’s that boat again!
. . . only this time it’s the French Marine service
vehicle drawn up on the quay, rather than the
Quantum one.
No, we did not install this monster auxiliary,
but we did have the pleasure of commissioning it.
The engine is a flexibly mounted 200hp Yanmar
driving a Gori 3-blade folding propeller. Fuel
capacity is 1000lts with 1000lts water.
Unsurprisingly, no problems were
encountered with the installation or on engine
trials. She’s just an amazing boat.
Nearly sunk
It’s been a very busy season for us at French
Marine. Somedays , things take an unexpected turn.
On a Tuesday at about 4.30pm back in August, Pat
happened to spot a motor boat in the Marina looking
very low in the water. She was a Nimbus NB 8.20 and
looked pretty new and well cared for, so we went
aboard to see what was up. The water level was half
way up the engine block and she still seemed to be
taking on water. It took two hours to pump her dry by
hand and give use a chance to look for the leak.
The installed bilge pump was obviously not
working so we set about removing it and were amazed
to discover that the base had been screwed into the
hull with - self-tappers! One of these had pierced the
hull skin and the source of the leak was located!
It would be no exaggeration to say that this was
the worst installation we had ever seen.
There was plenty of other damage caused by the
partial flood and as the boat was only 7 years old, the
work was put in hand. There was no damage to the
Volvo AD31 engine but we replaced the alternator,
starter motor, lots of wiring and the power trim pump
and made a proper job of installing the bilge pump.
SYH carried out some necessary GRP repairs.

Turbo burnout
We’ve have a higher than ususal number of
turbocharger failures this summer - and they could
nearly all have been prevented by more careful
operation.
When turbo engines have been running at high
revs for a considerable time, a lot of heat builds up in
the turbo itself and the coolant. If the engine is then
shut down too quickly, the bearings may seize. Which
is exactly what has happened in the photograph.
A very expensive mistake!
Winterisation?
“I’ve been told I need it - but what exactly is it?”
The engine oil is changed, the cooling system is
drained and filled with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and
inhibitor. Any cooling system anodes are changed.
Engine drive belts are checked and adjusted.
Fuel conditioners are added if required. Exhaust
and intakes are blanked. All of these checks and
adjustments help to insure that the engine makes it
through the winter in the best possible condition.

Actually we are doing a lot more than
dabbling. We are really enjoying it and are

Come to the Yacht and MOTORBOAT Fair!
Yacht Fair Development
Last Autumn’s Yacht Fair showed a
change in the general trend of recent fairs:
While the overall number of sales was
slightly down, the value of each individual
transaction was nearly double the previous
year. So in monetary terms, we finished way
ahead. And the higher proportion of power
boats sold again reflected this trend.
So this year’s event on 25-28 October will
be known as the Yacht & Motorboat Fair.

The 2007 Fastnet
Race ended prematurely for STRATA 6 and crew
due to the unexpected
and severe weather
conditions encountered
after the race start.
However the Race
Training and Heavy

undertaken by the 9
man crew stood them
in good stead making
them one of the last
group to take the decision to retire.
The crew are already

YACHT CRUISING
Introductory cruising weekends for visually
impaired sailors were held in May and September.
This year we tried something new and the main
cruise was organised as a 1 week cruise Fri 13th –
Sun 22nd July or 2 week cruise Fri 13th – Sat 28th
July. Nobody could call this a fine summer cruise!
There were very strong winds from the South
delaying the start for a full day. This time was used
to provide the entire fleet of 11 yachts and 40
sighted and VI crew with valuable familiarisation
sailing in the Haven ports area. The first sea passage
towards Ramsgate was again carried out in less
than ideal conditions but the entire fleet finally
made the planned passage in one or two days. The
forecast weather showed no real improvement
causing the fleet to take the decision to return to
the East Anglian Coast where the one week cruisers
completed their sailing. Three of the yachts on the
inaugural two week cruise continued to
Brightlingsea for a traditional fish and chips supper
ashore before heading the next day through the
Spitway to Chatham where the following day was
spent exploring the Dockyard Museum. The return
passage to join up with the other yachts on the two

week cruise was in a SW 6/7 which made for a fast
and sensible passage back to Suffolk Yacht Harbour
followed by a meal in the Lightship and the inevitable
song recital. The summer gales continued so the final
evening saw 28 EAST people eating, drinking and
singing the night way in the Lord Nelson at Ipswich
where trophies were presented to the skipper of
Hippokampos and EAST VI Cruise co-ordinator
Carol Bloyce.
If you know of a visually impaired person who would
just love to get afloat, or are a skipper with a bit of
spare time, or someone who would like to come
along as sighted crew for some excellent and very
sociable sailing, please contact Carol Bloyce.
KEELBOAT SAILING
Another season has drawn to a close with our
traditional fish and chip supper. Everyone has
enjoyed the sailing but it has been a difficult year
with bad weather causing an unprecedented number
of cancelled evenings. The Taster day in May
introduced several new members who are now
sailing with us. Two members attended an RYA
Keelboat course and will be awarded level 2 keelboat
certificates. A new road trailer has been purchased
for our support boat. We are always looking for more
disabled sailors and helpers. If you are interested in
sailing with us or know someone who might be
interested, please contact Colin Williamson.
VISION 2012
Vision 2012, EAST’s project to identify and train
potential candidates for the 2012 Paralympics has
had a very successful second year. We now have two
Sonars, Paralympic class yachts and the squad of six
have had some excellent race training which led to
some good results in a Multi-class Regatta at Rutland
Water in July and a win with a Squib in HPYC’s
Squiggle Goblet. For more information and offers of
help, please contact the Vision 2012 Secretary,
Michael Hervey-Murray.
