Parisi Makes Major League
Debut With St. Louis
Mike Parisi got the phone call that every minor league baseball player dreams about as the St.
Louis Cardinals promoted the former Jasper to the Major Leagues on May 3rd 2008. Twentyfour hours later he was in a big league uniform as the Cardinals hosted the Chicago Cubs on
ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

The 25-year-old, who was the 9 round selection (270 overall) of the St. Louis Cardinals in
the 2004 draft, went 9-8 with a 4.60 ERA at Double-A Springfield in 2006, and was 8-13 with
a 4.91 ERA at Triple-A Memphis in 2007. The 6’3” 215 lbs right-hander had posted a 2-1
record with 23 strikeouts over 32.2 innings of work in six starts with the Memphis Redbirds in
2008. Parisi was the first of all of the players that were chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in
2004 to make it to the Major Leagues as he advanced through the Cardinals minor league
system in only three years.
Tony Larussa on Parisi in an article from www.stlcardinals.com, “When we called down there,
he was the guy they recommended,” Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said on Sunday. “He’s
showed a Major League arm, Major League stuff. He was excited early and kind of all over
the place. Progressively, he just settled in. That was impressive.”
Just two days after being called up, Parisi made his Major League debut against the Colorado
Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, CO, as he came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning of a 44 game. He worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and one strikeout in the
Cardinals 6-5 win over the Rockies.
Since Parisi’s promotion the former Jasper has made five appearances, throwing 11.0 innings
while striking out nine while tallying a 3.27 ERA. For more information or to follow Mike
Parisi’s Major League career go to www.stlcardinals.com.

Troisi is the third left-hand pitcher to commit to Manhattan in this year’s
recruiting class. Xaverian High School Head Coach, Dennis Canale,
mentored the 6’5” southpaw from Brooklyn, NY. Troisi played his
summer baseball for coach Mel Zitter and Youth Service. In 13 league
games this spring Troisi is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA, and is hitting .500 with a
home run and 17 RBI’s.
“Matt is a big strong kid who has a great pitcher’s frame,” Coach Leighton
commented. “He has shown a lot of development since we began
recruiting him over the summer, and has the ability to throw in the upper
80’s and mix pitches well.”
DeRuve, a 6’2” 188 lbs. left hand hitting infielder, comes to Manhattan
from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, NY. At Bethlehem,
DeRuve was a three-year varsity starter for head baseball coach Rob Helm.
Currently, DeRuve is hitting .354 with 19 RBI while playing shortstop for
the 11-4 Eagles. DeRuve played his summer baseball for the South Troy
Dodgers and George Rodgers.
“Will brings a solid left handed bat to our roster next year,” Coach
Leighton stated. “We are excited to see what he can do and will look for
him to challenge for time at either second base or third base next spring.”
LaColla joins the Jaspers after a strong career at Our Lady of Lourdes High
School in Poughkeepsie, NY. Currently LaColla owns a 3-1 record with 34
strikeouts and a 1.47 ERA over 33.1 innings of work.
“Rob has very good command of his pitches and throws a lot of strikes,”
Coach Leighton said. “He will look to compete for a spot in next year’s
bullpen.”
The 2009 Jaspers are tentatively scheduled to open up with Oklahoma State
University on February 20th, 21st, and 22nd.
Jaspers Qualify for 2008
MAAC Playoffs
The 2008 Manhattan Baseball team
clinched its sixth consecutive playoff
berth on May 11th in the first game of a
double header vs. St. Peter’s. With three
games left on the regular season slate, the
28-16-1 Jaspers have the opportunity to
win 30 or more games for the third time
in as many years.
The playoff bound “Jasper 9” has locked
up the number two spot in the four-team
Dom Lombardi
field finishing behind Canisius College. Manhattan and Canisius finished
the regular season as Co-Champions. The Jaspers will be aiming for their
second MAAC Tournament Championship in three years.
The 2008 MAAC Baseball Championships will be held at Waterfront Park
in Trenton, NJ on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. The winner receives an
automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball field of 64. For more information on
