Salary and Benefit Survey Results Tuesday, June 16, 2015 2015 Salary and Benefits Survey Results Tuesday, June 16, 2015 Executive Summary In April of 2015, GPA conducted a salary and benefits survey of grant professionals. The survey was distributed to all active GPA members as well as our non-member and prospective lists; 288 responses were received. This response rate is helpful in generalizing the results of the survey to the population of grant professionals as a whole, as well as guarding the results from statistical anomalies, making the results more accurate. This is the ninth annual survey of its kind. In 2015, the GPA Salary Survey was expanded to collect benefit information of responding grant professionals as well as data on proposals funded versus proposals written. New data points and a strong response rate provide answers to the question, “Who is a typical grant professional?” • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Earns $64,154 per year as a full-time employee and with an option to receive health insurance through their employer (93.7%) Feels fairly (52.9%) compensated for the work s/he performs Writes 21-50 grant proposals a year States that s/he has a funding success rate of 21%-50% Female (87.5%), between 40-45 years old (14.9%), and White/Non-Hispanic (80.2%) Holds a Bachelor’s Degree (35.4%) in English (13.7%), Psychology (8.3%), Business Administration (7.7%), or Political Science (7.0%) Holds a Graduate or Professional Degree (61.5%) Works typically as a Grant Coordinator (proposal development and grants/project/fiscal management – 28.5%) or a Grant Proposal Writer (writes proposal, includes research, budget preparation & evaluation – 41.0%) Is Employed full-time in a job where all or most of his/her functions are related to grants (80.6%) Works in an urban area (66.3%) Has been in the grants field for 5-10 years (26.4%) or 10-15 years (20.1%) and considers him or herself an advanced practitioner in regards to skill level (45.8%) Works for a nonprofit agency (28.5%), government agency (local, state or federal – 13.5%), or college/university/research institute (13.2%) Works for a very well-established organization (87.2%) that employs over 250 employees (49.7%) with an annual operating budget of more than $20 million (54.2%), at which approximately six individuals work within the grant department or profession Earns an average of 27 Paid Time Off (PTO) days per year i 2015 Salary and Benefits Survey Results Tuesday, June 16, 2015 • • • Receives health insurance (93.7%), dental insurance (89.5%), and vision insurance (76.3%) Received additional benefits from their organization that includes long term disability, long term care, short term disability, Concentrates on writing proposals to local foundations (47.79%), the Federal government (24.72%), state governments (19.68%), and corporations (15.18%) Additional key findings include: • • • • • While there was a difference in salary by race ($92,500 Black or African American/Hispanic, $62,169.81 White/Non-Hispanic, and $42,500 Indigenous/American Indian or Alaskan Native), it is noted that there was only one Black or African American/Hispanic and one Indigenous/American Indian or Alaskan Native survey respondent, compared to 212 White/Non-Hispanic respondents. This is the ninth installment of the GPA salary survey, which has been conducted annually (with the exception of 2012) since 2006. In April, the survey was distributed online through GoogleDrive to all active GPA members and our mailing list of non-members via email. The survey was closed on May 15, 2015. Two hundred eighty-eight (288) responses were received, which is a decrease from the 2014 salary survey. The most responses to a previous salary survey were 583 in 2009.
