Introduction
This is a basic Chinese language course with a training of integrated skills. It aims to exercise the
language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese language. By the studying of this
course, students are supposed to master the basic knowledge about linguistic elements such as
speech, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters, and enable the ability of listening, speaking,
reading and writing to meet the communication requirements in daily life, studying and other
situations.
Objectives
The objectives of the proposed course are as follows.
1. To provide integrated Chinese language knowledge skills for the learners.
2. To provide a fundamental and systematic language study on general Chinese linguistics,
including characters, vocabulary, grammar, syntax and so on.
3. To enable interested learners of the four fundamental abilities of the language, including
listening, speaking, reading and writing.
4. To stimulate the learners’ interest in Chinese language and culture.
Target groups
The prospective beneficiaries of the Course will consist of the following.
i. Students who have no basic knowledge in Chinese language
ii. Students who are willing to study in China
iii. General public who is simply interested in studying in Chinese language and culture.
Admission requirements
Applicants possessing any of the following qualifications are eligible to seek admission.
1. Be interested in studying in Chinese language, especially in written forms.
or
2. Seek for a practical course of Chinese language.
or
3. Need to learn systematic Chinese language skills for research or work purpose.
or
4. Need to develop a basic lingual ability of Chinese language.
Medium of Instruction
The course will be taught in English.
Duration of the course
The duration of the course will be 20 sessions and each session for 3 hours, totally 60 hours.
Teaching methodology
The teaching methodology will include in-class lectures, discussions, seminars, short writings, oral
and written presentations as well as other ways that are necessary depending on the need of a
particular session.

Syllabus
The course has been designed to provide students with a systematic linguistic knowledge and
practical skills in Chinese and particularly enable them to have a fundamental and preparatory ability
of the language for future studies.
The course contains the following twelve units:
1. Speech
2. Chinese characters
3. Greetings, names, nationalities and introductions
4. Salutations, family members and jobs
5. Numbers, ages, telephone numbers and money
6. Buying and selling goods
7. The expression of time
8. Ordering Meals
9. Asking for directions
10. Seeing a doctor
11. Colors
12. Review, final exam
