Editor’s Byline By Marla Wetterling Hi Everyone, I apologize for not getting a Posts Boy out in December of 2014 but with no meetings and our holiday party and all the stuff that goes on with the Christmas season, I just didn’t get it done. That will be one of my New Years resolutions. This past week, I was able to make contact with Al Judson’s wife Martha and she said he is holding on and getting a bit confused on why he’s still here. He is open to communication, but it is difficult on him so please try and keep your calls or visits short and coordinate them through Martha. She said he has enjoyed getting the stamp publications that we’ve been delivering after several of our last meetings. I have attempted to contact Ed and Arlene as well as Jackie to check and see how they are doing, but I’ve only been able to leave voicemails. Please keep Corrine and Paul in your prayers as well. It sounds like she has been having a positive outcome in her medical issues. We have one confirmed dealer for the upcoming show so far and are working on more. If you have had any contact buying or selling to dealers outside of our area, please pass their contact information on to us and we’d be more than happy to see if they’d like to be part of our show this year. If there is a specific type of item that you have been looking for and the dealers that have come to the show don’t seem to stock it and it is a specialty item, let us know and we can look up to see if there are any dealers with those items open to coming to our show. 2 New Information on the NSSS Club website at: www.renostamp.org by John Walter, Webmaster In addition to information about upcoming meetings and events, some interesting information was added to the website. On the <links> page is a great website that list all the U.S. non-denominated stamps. Many collectors accumulate unneeded mint stamps that end up being used for postage. Determining the postal values of non-denominated stamps (those without a face value specified) can be tricky, especially if you do not want to be bothered with pulling out a catalogue. The United States Non-Denominated Stamp Values page was put together on the Knottywood Treasures website to make that task easier, showing illustrations of most non-denominated, non-"Forever" U.S. postage stamps. The guide makes using surplus postage a breeze, and it is well worth bookmarking for future reference. On the <Post Boy> page I added three interesting articles. "Free Stamp e-Books" is a short article where to look for early books and catalogues. The e-books can be easily downloaded and looked over at your convenience. The same goes for "The Travers Papers" which is a collection of postmaster files and communications from the 1800s. The other article is actually a list of about 40 U.S. joint stamps issued with other countries. The Scott numbers and subject matter are included. And the most important addition is the nomination form for the 2015 election for officers and directors. As reminder, the officer positions will be president and treasurer. Each term is for 2 years. Two director positions will be open with terms of three years each. It is not too early to prepare to yourself to step up and serve your local stamp club. The elections are in July. Another reminder while on the website, take a look at the Post Boy archives. If you have any missing old Post Boy newsletters that can be scanned, please bring them to a meeting. I am using the website as an archive for everything Nevada Stamp Study Society related. It will be a lot easier to carry around a CD/DVD with club files then worrying about boxes in somebody's garage. I hope to have all the pictures taken in 2014 in the gallery section of the website by the end of December. So keep checking and see if you can spot yourself doing something for the club. 2015 Greater Reno Stamp & Cover Show Saturday, July 25, 2015 - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2015 - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hall of Fame Museum, National Bowling Stadium 300 N. Center Street, Reno, Nevada 89501-1129 The information for our upcoming show has been created on our club website. Be sure and mark your calendars now. http://www.renostamp.org/show.html It is not too early to sign up for a table for our 2015 stamp show. Please contact our dealer chair (John Wetterling) at 775-575-1337 or via email at: [email protected] 40th Year Anniversary Celebration Nevada Stamp Study Society 3 My suggestions for special activities and projects for 2015. 1. Special postmark and/or cachet envelope with NSSS logo. 2. No commission for members selling items in monthly auctions/consignments for 2015. (Incentive to attend meetings and sell and hopefully buy items.) 3. Update and print history of the NSSS over the past 40 years. May need several issues of the Post Boy to get it done. 4. Reprint original articles from Post Boys of 70s, 80s and 90s. (There's a murder mystery, as told by Bill Brew, at our stamp show at the Pioneer Center.) 5. Use PA system at all meetings - for announcements and programs. (Hopefully keep secondary meetings [talking] to a minimum.) 6. Special activities to earn even more auction bucks. NEED SUGGESTIONS 7. Print new membership directory - maybe a memorial section for members who greatly contributed to the organization over many years. The new directory would be printed in the fall after membership renewals. (Maybe even a one year anniversary discount or one or two thousand auction bucks to renew this year.) 8. Suggestions to improve the website - maybe having a member’s only section. I can do this if there is interest and special material submitted. 9. Special Library and Post Office displays. I already have large display cases reserved during October, National Stamp Collecting Month, at the South Valleys Library, Sparks Library, and Carson City Library. (Since I can't be in three places at the same time, I probably will need some help with this ambitious project.) Maybe something special at the Vassar Post Office. Currently the PO display is changed every two months. NSSS has two locked frames at Vassar that is large enough for a 6-page display plus a little room at the bottom I use for covers and a notice we sponsor the displays. 10. Anniversary article with pictures for the Council Courier and Linn's. Maybe the history article can be sent to the APS. 11. Enter our website in the competition for best websites - usually in June each year. 12. Stamp show theme for our July show. Put your thinking caps on and bring your suggestions to the next several meetings. If you cannot attend the meetings, email suggestions to [email protected] There will be a Board of Directors meeting on Jan. 24. All suggestions will be considered by the board. Dick did his magic with providing a wonderful main dish for our event and we had plenty of volunteers to help set up and clean up after the event. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this a fantastic event, especially George Ray and our two Barbara’s. This year it seemed there were fewer members present than usual but the past year has been a difficult year for membership with several members moving out of the area as well as some have passed away. You can view all the holiday party pictures at: http://renostamp.org/2014_party/ 6 Remember When… 6 I dug through the website to find some older pictures. I love how John Walter keeps us all connected through the website. 7 7 January 2015 Quiz by John Wetterling 1. US #122 90 cent carmine and black has whose portrait on it? a. Washington b. Lincoln c.
