YEAR 4 - SPRING TERM 2017 English Maths Science Art and Design Computing Design and Technology Explanation Texts – The children will focus on structuring information into a logical order using specific vocabulary to ensure that the information is clear to understand. Stories from other cultures – The children will explore a variety of different cultures in order to develop a range of different settings, characters and events. The children will develop their knowledge of other cultures in order to write their own story from another culture. Advertisements – Children will present information from a variety of sources in one simple format, for example chart, labelled diagram, graph, matrix. This will develop into children creating their own advert. Poetry – Children will lead up to writing their own poems using similes and imagery. They will share their poems through performance and discussion The children will be focusing on Measurement and Number. Within measurement, the children will explore converting, estimating and comparing between different units of measure including money in pounds and pence. Children will also be converting between the 12 and 24 hour clock including problem solving involving converting from hours to minutes; minutes to seconds; years to months and weeks to days. Within number, the children will be focusing on fractions and will be taught to recognise and show families of common equivalent fractions, count up and down in hundredths, add and subtract fractions and solve problems involving increasingly harder fractions to calculate quantities. Circuits and Electricity The children will build on previous practical experience of making circuits and extend their understanding of circuits, conductors and insulators and the need for a complete circuit in order for a device to work. Children are introduced to ways in which they can vary the current in a circuit. Sound – The children will be identifying how sounds are made and recognise how this happens. Children will find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it. Children will carry out investigations to discover how to protect our ears from loud sounds. Printing – The children will be using a range of materials to design and make products. The children will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop their ideas, experiences and imagination. The children will be focusing on communication through computing. This will include the exploration of E-safety and being aware of what to do if they encounter anything that is worrying or upsetting. Alongside this the children will focus on using child friendly search engines to locate information particularly about the North west region linked to Geography. Electrical systems – The children will focus on creating a device that includes circuits and switches. As we cover electricity within science, the children will have a host of knowledge and understanding to impart when deciding what to create. Geography The North West The children will develop a contextual knowledge of the North West of England and recognise the key defining physical and human geographical features of the North West. The children will also be taught how these features are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation. Spanish Children will continue to develop their Spanish as a modern foreign language through lessons delivered by specialist teacher. The children will be focusing on the Spanish alphabet, weather, school subjects and also opinions (like/dislike) (Specialist Teacher) Music (Specialist Teachers) P.E. P.S.H.E. Personal, Social and Health Education The children will continue their learning on the basic rudiments of playing the classical clarinet, including recognising different notes and following familiar and unfamiliar notation patterns to play tunes to accompany songs and longer musical pieces. Children will also continue to be taught to recognise and use key musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch and tempo. Gymnastics (Specialist Teacher) The children will be developing and performing a range of body shapes, balances and explore different ways of travelling using apparatus. They will begin to put together a sequence of movements. Games - Athletics will be the focus during the PE games lessons. Here children will practise and become familiar with skills such as running, throwing and jumping. This will build up into team games with competitive elements. Swimming – Children will learn how to swim 15 meters unaided. Children will develop this skill with support and guidance. Going for Goals - The children will learn the skills and attributes of an effective learner and try to develop these skills. Good to be me – Children will learn how to understand feelings, and why and how they lead us to behave the way we do – particularly the feelings of being excited, proud, surprised, hopeful, disappointed, worried and anxious.
