THE CHOIR
The choir presented a mini-concert after the service
on May 26th, a little wrap-up of all our beautiful
singing over the last year.
We will take a break from rehearsals during June, July
and August, reconvening in September.
Thank you to the congregation and the Board for all
your support over the year!
Kiera
CHILDREN’S HOUR
Dear boys and girls,
How well you worked together so we could do a small presentation on Easter
Sunday!
With the congregation’s help, you were able to collect over $600 for needy
children. This enabled us to order goats, rabbits, cows, school books, and you
even had enough to give part of an ambulance. So many people will be helped
because people in Toronto care.
The posters Claire, Amanda, Thomas and Madelyn made for the Confirmation
Party and for Mother’s Day were appreciated. Well done!
I wish you all a good Summer. Remember to read some Bible stories. Maybe
you can find the Easter story we talked about.
I hope to see you at church with your parents during the Summer.

DANSKSKOLEN
Dansk Skolen is coming to an end for the year. Our last class is May 25th, with
our traditional potluck celebration. On Saturday, May 4th we celebrated Skt.
Hans, and enjoyed snobrød over an open fire. We are also saying goodbye to
our teacher, Daniela, she will be missed
dearly! She has been with the Danish
school since it's conception. We wish her
the best and thank you Daniela.
Please contact us if you are interested in a
teaching position on: [email protected].
The Danish School will begin registration
again in late August. Please watch our website for updates:

GOLDEN AGE CLUB
The Golden Age Club Summer BBQ will be on June 13th at 12:30pm at the
church. During the months of July and August the Golden Age Club will be in
Vacation Mode, but please come and join the other church activities that are
going on - please see the Gudstjenesteliste and the Almanac!
The Golden Age Club will meet again in September, please see the next issue of
Kirkehilsen for details.
ELSE STAAL NIELSEN IN MEMORIAM
Just before the printing of this newsletter, we were informed of the tragic and
totally untimely death of Else Staal Nielsen. This shocking news took us all by
surprise. She was such a mainstay of our church, not to mention her family and
many other interest groups. For fourteen long consecutive years she served on
the Board of this church – including five years as a chairperson and five as secretary. In addition, even after this contribution, her involvement and support and
leadership with the Golden Age Club, as church organist, choir organizer and
participant, bazaar booth and special event co-ordinator, short-notice piano player, and caring and loving confidant – the list is endless. Her loss to us and her
family and friends will not go unnoticed. However, as we all know, she would
want us to keep going – and that we will. We are grateful for the times we
shared, the knowledge we learned, and memories we will keep for many years to
come. Thank you for being you Else – we love you and we will miss you – and
you will always be part of us.
Æret være hendes minde!
Sune Overgaard, on behalf of all her “church family”.
CHURCH CAFÉ
Thank you to the 58 people who joined us so we could hold a special Thank
You Party for Pastor Hanne. You helped set a good mood, and from Denmark,
Hanne once again says thanks to all for such a festive send off .
We look forward to seeing Pastor Dickmeiss and Karen at the upcoming
Tuesday meetings.
In June the Church Cafe will continue to meet each Tuesday at noon. We hope
to see many of you join us for lunch, a few songs and jokes and a game of cards.
We always have a hyggelig time together.
In July and August we will meet twice a month, so please put July 9th and 23rd,
and August 6th and 20th in your calendars.
Enjoy a beautiful Summer and we hope to see you on Tuesdays.
Liselotte, Doreen and Avril

SANKT HANS FEST
June 23rd, at 6:30pm
Our mid-summer festival will start with a short evening
service. Afterwards we will go into our lovely park
(weather permitting of course), and enjoy a traditional
Skt. Hans program complete with songs, a bonfire
(well as much as the city fire department will allow), a
speech, and strawberries and ice cream with our coffee. Bring your own lawn chairs if you like. At 8:00 pm
we will make the draw for the lucky winners of our
Summer Lottery. All tickets have to be received by
then to be eligible.
Join us for a fun and entertaining evening.
SUMMER LOTTERY 2013
The lottery tickets for the draw on the Skt Hans
Fest, Sunday June 23rd at 8pm are almost
ready. You should receive them by June 7th, so
please contact anyone from the Board (see back
page) if this does not happen. You can use the
self-addressed and stamped envelope to return
the ticket stubs (the smaller part of the ticket)
with your payment. If you do not wish to participate, please mail the complete ticket package
back to us in the envelope provided.
We wish to thank our sponsors: Valhalla Travel, Malmholt Fine Jewellers, Torp
Inc. (Arne Nordtorp), Teak Barn, Guelph, and a generous church member.
The lottery is an important fundraising opportunity for the church and we could
not do it without these donors. Please remember to support their businesses
whenever you have a chance!
BBQ IN THE PARK
We continue the tradition of having a BBQ in our park
(weather permitting) on Sunday July 28th after the church
service. You are all invited to join us for this family event.
The board will serve a light barbecue lunch with coffee, juice,
or pop. Feel free to bring your own “refreshments" and lawn
chairs, and any sunshine you can find. We look forward to a
wonderful day and to seeing you there!!!

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Despite the little surprise (snow,
sleet, wind, and rain – all within a
couple of hours) we recently experienced, most of our current weather is
quite spring-like. Many are already
gardening, cutting grass, and barbequing. With summer just ahead,
swimming and vacations cannot be
far away. We had another successful
Spring Bazaar with great food, exciting booths, much variety, and lots of
happy participants. Many thanks to
all the dedicated helpers – it could
not be done without you!! The fundraiser on Easter Sunday for the Sunday school went well with the benefit
being their special Christian charities.
We enjoyed another wonderful evening of food (even with a faulty stove),
fun, and entertainment at our Royal
Dinner. Plans for various “kitchen
project” fundraisers were announced.
The folk dancers’ Krobal was another success story – complete with a
$500 donation to the kitchen fund.
Mange tak! Our movie afternoons
are very popular, with 20+ participants every time. At our Spring
luncheon we thanked the confirmants and their parents – as well as
welcomed Christian Dickmeiss and
his wife Karen as our pastor family
until early July. And the Spring Clean
-Up crews were doing their best to
make our church and grounds presentable once more. All these events
are only possible because of your
help and support. Thank you to all
the participants.
The Constitution Day Fest at Sunset
Villa is on Sunday June 2 (no services
in Toronto). Our annual Skt. Hans
Fest is on Sunday June 23 starting at
6:30pm. After a short service we
hope to enjoy strawberries, ice
cream, and the lottery draw under
the trees. The Summer Lottery tickets, with great prizes as usual, will be
sent out shortly. Please support the
church by purchasing a book or two.
As we have been “in between ministers” and otherwise occupied the last
little while, we will not be able to put
on the Danish Summer Day Camp
this year. We hope to bring it back
again next year. Sunday July 7th will
be the installation day for our new
minister Kenneth Berg. Hanne Vejs
(remember her??) and Bishop
Skovsgaard will be officiating – and
we look forward to a wonderful and
memorable event that day. And July
wouldn’t be the same without our
BBQ in the garden on Sunday July
28th. Please join us for all these
events and get your summer off to a
great start.
Most of our activity groups will go
into vacation mode for the summer
months. Please check the almanac or
website for specific dates and times of
events happening throughout the
summer. We are planning various
fundraising events for the kitchen
project and look forward to your
support. As always, there will be regular Sunday services complete with
coffee afterwards. Consider bringing
a visiting friend or relative, and join
us on a Sunday morning. We welcome all to participate in any of these
events and share in the wonderful
benefits of our church.
Have a happy and safe summer.

FRA PASTOR DICKMEISS
Karen og jeg blev meget glade over
muligheden for at vende tilbage til
Danish Lutheran Church i korte 8
uger for at være præstefolk for jer
alle indtil jeres nye præst Kenneth
kommer.
Tak fordi I ville have
os her og for en fin modtagelse.
Naturligvis er meget forandret, men
ikke alt, og meget til det bedre.
Kirken står helt som vi husker, selv
om nabo-bebyggelsen er total
anderledes. Præsteboligen er der sket
gode forandringer på. Området
omkring Finch og Yonge er næppe til
at kende, om til det gode eller ej ved
jeg ikke, men til det flotte og høje i
hvert tilfaelde. Og hvor virker her
rent og trygt og rigt overalt. I har gode
kår. Som vi har det i Danmark.
”Der er tid til at plante og tid til at
rydde,” som der står i Prædikerens
bog. Det kan vi se på den have som
blev anlagt, da vi flyttede ind her i
1973. Men Herrens ord består
mand imellem i kirken end for 40 år
siden, hvor der hørtes lidt mere
dansk. En helt naturlig udvikling.
Nu er vi her så, og jeg glæder mig til
at fungere som præst i nogle uger og
holde gudstjenester sammen med jer.
Det er nok det der har ændret sig
mindst. Jeg vil slutte med den hilsen/
opfordring som jeg har hørt så tit
her : ”See you in church on Sunday”
Mange hilsner
Christian Dickmeiss
Det dufter lysegrønt af græs
i grøft og mark og enge.
Og vinden kysser klit og næs
og reder urtesenge.
Guds sol går ind i krop og sind,
forkynder, at nu kommer
en varm og lys skærsommer
Se, blomsterflorets farvepragt
gør alle ord forlegne.
Kong Salomon i kroningsdragt
misundeligt må blegne!
Alt smukt, vi ved, al kærlighed,
den mindste fugl og lilje
er, Gud, din skabervilje
Hør fugletungers tusindfryd
fra morgen og til aften!
De kappes om at give lyd,
der priser skaberkraften.
Hvert kim og kryb i jordens dyb
en livsfryd i sig mærker
så høj som himlens lærker
Ja, Jesus Kristus er det Ord,
der skaber liv af døde,
så ny blir himmel, ny blir jord,
en verden grøn af grøde.
Kom, Jesus, snart, og gør det klart:
den morgenstund, du kommer, da
gryr en evig sommer

PASTOR’S CORNER
In this issue of Kirkehilsen, Pastor’s
Corner has been offered to me.
We – my wife and I – are preparing
to leave Denmark. As it has become
public that we are going to Toronto,
a surprising number of people have
told me about their own experiences
of the city. One of my colleagues told
me how he had actually wanted to go
see the Danish church while he was
in Toronto. He knew there was a
Danish church somewhere, only he
did not have the address. So he entered a bakery to ask for directions
for the Danish church… The employees could not help him. They seem
to have been under the impression
that he was asking for pastry… Of
course my colleague was laughing at
his own mistake when he told me. I
thought it was a funny story. Without
a guide it’s easy to get lost in a city the
size of Toronto.
Now, a guide may lead you in a particular direction but also direct your
attention to the things that you pass
along the way. The bishop for Ribe,
Elisabeth Dons Christensen, once
said in an address that the minister
should be like a guide. What she
meant was the second thing: he or
she should be like a tour guide drawing attention to the world outside.
Because Christianity is essentially
about seeing the world. I thought that
was a beautiful simile. I fully embrace
it as a job description or rather as an
ideal to aim for. It goes both ways,
however.
When I land in Toronto July 3rd, I
will be landing in your world and I
shall need directions. I may not find
myself in a bakery asking for the
church on Finch Avenue and ending
up buying Danish. I have been there
and I know the location. But I shall
need directions as to how you do
things in your community. And I
shall be interested in what the world
looks like from your perspective.
Talking about guided tours, one
could say that some of the best
hymns in the Danish tradition are
exactly that: guided tours through
creation. Especially those that we sing
when it is spring. They are essentially
an invitation to go out, to look at
creation, to wonder, and to be grateful for life. They do not invite us to
contemplate a different world but this
world that we are living in and to
discover more and more of all the
valuable things in it. And let me just
end here with a quote from German
Catholic thinker Max Scheler who
sums up very nicely what it is all
about. “The soul of the pious person”, he says, “always thanks silently
for space, for light, for air, for the
existence of her arms, her limbs, her
breath, and the whole world is populated with values and un-values, even
what to others is indifferent.” In other words: faith brings out the value of
the world. And always more easily
when it is summer!
Pastor Kenneth

THE FOLKDANCERS
The Folkdancers have lost one of its longest and dearest members with the tragic
passing of Else Staal Nielsen. Else was one of the original members of our
group, and was active for many years, not just as a dancer, but also playing the
piano and providing valuable support for the making of our costumes. She will
be missed by all of us. Æret være hendes minde.
We have had a busy spring performing at the Queen’s Dinner with our very own
brand of “Table-dancing” and preparing for our “Krobal” spring party. It was a
great success. We had approximately 70 people who danced the night away to
Danish, Finnish and Swedish folkdances, and even some square dances and
international dances. A good time and good food was enjoyed by all participants.
A huge thank you to the organizers, decorators, cooks and not least the dance
instructors. The Folkdancers had agreed to donate part of the proceeds to the
kitchen fund, and Audrey, our president, could make a considerable donation
on the following Sunday.
To celebrate the coming of Spring we made our traditional tour to Orangeville to entertain the seniors at the Lord
Dufferin Centre, complete with a maypole. It is always an
enjoyable event for both the Folkdancers and the seniors,
and we all had a good time. We are now preparing for
our Constitution Day performance, and our spring session will finish with a get-together on June 7th, before we
break for Summer till we start again in the Fall.
Check the “Kirkehilsen” for the exact date in September.

GREETINGS FROM SUNSET VILLA
This is a very busy time at Sunset Villa. We just had our annual garage sale, and
the Sunshine Ladies were kept busy. They put out quite a collection, we had a
very good day with many visitors, especially since it was also a Baker’s Sunday
and the weather was very cooperative with beautiful sunshine all day long.
We are in the middle of preparing for the Annual Constitution Day. It takes a
lot of work to put such a day together, but thanks to all our volunteers it is getting done. For sure we expect to see you all there.
The park will open at 10am, the entrance will be $5 for all and children under
12 will be admitted for free. At 12 noon the children’s games will start. There
will be a competition for the kids, they have to dress as Vikings, and there will be
prizes for the best costumes. At 2:30pm the entertainment will start, there will be
a couple of small speeches, followed by a group of Folkdancers. All during the
day smørrebrød, æbleskiver and pølser will be for sale. Of course if you wish to
bring your own picnic you are more than welcome to do that. We hope you will
all be there to enjoy the day with us.

GREETINGS FROM GRIMSBY
Spring Greetings from the Danish
Lutheran Church in Grimsby!
The Danish songwriter and author,
Sigfred Pedersen, wrote the song:
“Nu går våren gennem Nyhavn.”
I always think of that song every
Spring, because Sigfred found the
Spring in København. Sigfred was a
native to København and he loved
the city, and Nyhavn in particular.
It is not easy to find spring there!
Spring you have to find in Mother Nature - so do we think! Green grass, flowers,
and light summer winds, green trees, and birds. Then we can embrace spring.
But Sigfred was a great poet! I know it because I have known him personally,
and met him several times in the sixties in Denmark. Spring is lovely, everything
is new and fresh and our body and soul gets re-loaded.
Welcome Spring! I wish you a happy Spring Time!
Pastor Lars, Grimsby
COMMEMORATING THE FOUNDING
OF THE DANISH FEDERATION
On Saturday, April 27, 2013, a plaque commemorating the founding of the
Danish Federation was unveiled at Sunset Villa in Puslinch, Ontario, where the
Danish Federation was formed on June 7, 1981.
The initiative for commemorating the establishment of the
Danish Federation came from
the Executive of the Ontario
Region, which paid for the
plaque and stone and organized
the ceremony, which was held
in beautiful sunshine.
