Purpose of Using Strategy:
A versatile strategy used to develop writing fluency, to build the habit of
reflection into a learning experience, and to informally assess student
thinking. This supports multiple learning styles by providing both right
and left brain processing task. The strategy asks learners to respond in 2–
10 minutes to an open-ended question or prompt posed by the teacher
before, during, or after reading. Students will write and draw the response.
VII.
Steps:
1. The teacher explains a Quick Write / Quick Draw helps engage
students in thinking about a content topic before, during, and after
reading. In a Quick Write / Quick Draw, students respond to a question
or prompt related to the text by writing down whatever comes to their
minds without organizing it too much or worrying about grammar on
the right side of the graphic organizer and on the left side of the
graphic organizer draw an illustration of the topic. (see Attachment1)
2. The teacher selects a topic related to the text being studied and defines
the purpose for the Quick Write / Quick Draw:
Examples:
• Summarize what was learned or applied
• Connect to background information or students’ lives
• Explain content concepts or vocabulary
• Make predictions, inferences, and hypotheses
• Pose a question that addresses a key point in the reading selection
3. The teacher tells the students how long to they have to complete the
writing and drawing, typically 2–10 minutes.
4. Using Timed RoundRobin, students will share their Quick Write /
Quick Draw. Student 1 begins sharing Quick Write / Quick Draw for
one minute. Student 2 shares for one minute and then the process
continues with Student 3 and 4.
Note: Typically a Quick Write / Quick Draw is graded only for
completion, not for quality or accuracy.
VIII. Tips:
This activity may be modified by having students work in small groups to
create a Quick Write, with each student offering one sentence in a RoundRobin fashion. Student can add illustration at a later time.
