PRE-WRITING
YEAR 9 TEST
In this activity you will develop a piece of descriptive writing in which you focus on a
character. The character may be someone you know or they may be fictional. In your
story your character must be doing something. This could be anything you choose,
but examples include; attending the wedding/funeral of a loved one, confronting
another friend about an issue or even just going to the beach with family. Ultimately
the situation is up to you. You can write it from the perspective of the character you
are describing or from a third person perspective/ independent witness. You will
write at least 200 words and will be assessed on the following areas. These areas
are explained below. You are to write your story on refill.

Spelling -Are you using Capital letters appropriately? Are words spelt correctly? Are
you using the wrong homonym? (Words spelt differently but sound the same-e.g.
their, there)
Grammar/Punctuation- Are you using the proper punctuation? Are you using
commas correctly? Do you know what makes up a sentence?
Flow / Style- Is it easy to read? Do ideas flow logically? Is it believable? Is the
narrative voice consistent?
Structure-How your sentences are put together. How your ideas are constructed
using paragraphs
Vocabulary- the type or words you use. Do you understanding the meaning of ‘higher
order’ word you are using and are you using them in the correct context?
No dictionaries or iPads.
