1. Hermione left the Gryffindor common room for classes at 7:45am one morning. She returned to
the common room at 4:05pm that afternoon. How many hours and minutes was she gone?
(The number of minutes in your answer must be less than 60.)
2. A doctor’s prescription tells the pharmacist that Joey needs a teaspoon of medicine three times
a day. A teaspoon is 5 milliliters. Joey needs to take the medicine for 10 days. How many
milliliters of the medicine must the pharmacist put in the bottle?
3. If the space shuttle orbits the Earth in 1½ hours and travels 27,000 miles in one orbit, how fast is
the space shuttle traveling in miles per hour?
4. Sound can travel a distance of 1 mile in 5 seconds. What is the speed of sound in miles per
hour?
5. The newest CD that your friend just made lasts exactly 42 minutes and 15 seconds. If you
played that CD nonstop, without pauses between the last and first songs, how many times
would the CD be able to play in its entirety in a period of one week?
6. In creating a timeline, you wanted to show 15.3 billion years using a 61.2 centimeter line. How
long, in millimeters, would a 1 million year span be represented as? Express your answer as a
decimal.
7. If a dozen donuts weighs 3 pounds, how many ounces does ¼ of a donut weigh? There are 16
ounces in a pound.
8. When traveling to the planet Zeta-9 you must exchange all of your funds to the local currency,
and you are only allowed to carry Zombas. So how many Zombas you will get for $3360,
according to the following exchange rates:
3 Uzzles = $16
7 Uzzles = 15 Orpas
3 Orpas = ½ Zomba

BONUS PROBLEMS
9. If you hear thunder 27½ seconds after you see lightning, how far away is the storm?
(Remember that it takes sound 5 seconds to travel one mile. For the purposes of this problem,
assume that light travels instantaneously.)
10. Terry drives a distance of 20 miles at an average rate of 50 MPH (miles per hour). Sherry drives
20 miles at an average rate of 40 MPH. Neither person stops. How many fewer minutes does
Terry need to complete the trip than Sherry does?
11. If a chocolate frog can jump 560 inches in 10 seconds, how many yards can it jump per second?
(Answer as a reduced mixed fraction.)
12. 12 ¾ feet equals 3.886 meters. How many meters equal 8 7/16 feet?

SOLUTIONS:
1. 8 hours, 20 minutes.
Count up, using round numbers to keep it simple.
From 7:45am to 8:00am: 0 hours, 15 min.
From 8:00am to 12 noon: 4 hours, 0 min.
From 12 noon to 4:00pm: 4 hours, 0 min.
From 4:00pm to 4:05pm: 0 hour, 5 min.
15 min. + 4 hours + 4 hours + 5 min. = 8 hours 20 minutes.
2. 150 milliliters.
3 x 5 x 10 = 150 milliliters.
3. 18,000 miles per hour.
27,000/1 ½ = 18,000.
4. 720 miles per hour.
In 5 sec, sound travels 1 mile, so in 1 sec, it travels 1/5 mile.
Since 1 hr = 3600 sec, in 1 hr it travels 1/5 x 3600 = 720 miles.
5. 238 times.
42 min and 15 sec = 2535 sec
1 week = 7 x 24 x 3600 sec = 604800 sec
604800 / 2535 = 238.58
6. 0.04 mm.
15.3 x 1000 million yr = 61.2 x 10 mm
1 million yr = 612 / 15300 mm = 0.04 mm
7. 1 ounce.
12 donuts = 48 ounces; 1 donut = 4 ounces; ¼ donut = 1 ounce
8. 225 Zombas
$3360 = 3360 / 16 * 3 Uzzles = 630 Uzzles
630 Uzzles = 630 x 15 / 7 Orpas = 1350 Orpas
1350 Orpas = 1350 x 1/6 Zombas = 225 Zombas
9. 5 ½ miles.
27 ½ seconds/5 miles per second = 5 1/2.
10. 6 minutes.
At 50 miles/hr, for 20 miles Terry takes 1/50 x 20 x 60 = 24 minutes
At 40 miles/hr, for 20 miles Sherry takes 1/40 x 20 x 60 = 30 minutes
So Terry takes 6 fewer minutes.
11. 1 5/9 yards

560 inches in 10 sec = 56 inch/sec = 56 x 1/12 x 1/3 yard/sec = 1 5/9 yard/sec
12. 2.572 meters.
( 3.886 / 12 ¾ ) x 8 7/16 = 2.572
