INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1.1 Introduction This Installation Manual does not contain all the necessary information for the installation of the PARALLEL UPS SYSTEMS ECOWAVE. To perform correct installation and commissioning of PARALLEL UPS SYSTEMS ECOWAVE it is necessary to refer also to the OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE, Part 1: Single Unit. =============================================================================== THE ECOWAVE OPERATING MANUAL FOR SINGLE UNITS IS TO BE CONSIDERED AS A PART OF THIS MANUAL. DO NOT ATTEMPT ! TO COMMISSION A PARALLEL ECOWAVE SYSTEM WITHOUT ALSO READING CAREFULLY THE OPERATING MANUAL OF ECOWAVE SINGLE UNITS WHICH IS DELIVERED TOGETHER WITH THESE OPERATING AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. =============================================================================== ============================================================================= ALL OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION REGARDING THE PARALLEL SYSTEM MUST BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL TRAINED ! BY NEWAVE OR BY ITS AUTHORISED PARTNERS. ============================================================================= The manufacturer will take no responsibility for any personal or material damage caused by wrong cabling or manipulations which are not described in this Manual. 1.2 Reception of UPS, Nameplate, Unpacking, Battery Cabling, Storage, Physical Set-up of UPS, Refer to Chapter 2, paragraph 2.1 of the enclosed OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE, Part 1: Single Unit. 1.3 UPS CABLING Perform cabling of each UPS of the Parallel System according to Chapter 2, paragraph 2.2 of the OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE Part 1: Single Unit. In addition at the end of this Manual there are drawings of the parallel systems. NOTE: IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE EQUAL LOAD SHARING BETWEEN THE UPS UNITS, THE INPUT CABLE LENGTHS FROM THE INPUT DISTRIBUTION BOARD TO THE UPS AND FROM THE OUTPUT CABLE TO THE OUTPUT DISTRIBUTION BOARD SHOULD BE THE SAME RESPECTIVELY. =============================================================================== DURING THE CABLING OF THE UPS’s MAKE SURE THAT THE UPS’s ARE VOLT FREE AND THE MAINTENANCE BYPASS (IA1) AND THE PARALLEL ISOLATOR ! (Q2) ARE OPEN ON ALL THE UNITS. =============================================================================== ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 4 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 1.4 Connection of Parallel Communication Cables (BUS-lines) For the correct performance of different parallel functions and operations the parallel units communicate continuously between each other. This is achieved by means of the so called communication BUS lines. ============================================================================= ALL OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION REGARDING THE PARALLEL SYSTEM MUST BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL TRAINED ! BY NEWAVE OR BY ITS AUTHORISED PARTNERS. ============================================================================= After terminating the input and output cabling of the UPS, it is necessary to connect the parallel units together to form the Parallel Systems. For this purpose 2 communication BUS lines are connected sequentially between the parallel units. The communication BUS cables must be connected according to the DRAWING: “BUS-Connections” on the following page. NOTE: CONNECT THE BUS CABLES ONLY WITH SWITCHED OF UPS AND OPENED PARALLEL ISOLATORS Q2. Connection of BUS Lines: NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO RESPECT THE FOLLOWING CONNECTION SEQUENCE Connect PORT JD4(25pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 1 and PORT JD3(25pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 2 with corresponding BUS-Cable Connect PORT JD4(25pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 2 and PORT JD3(25pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 3 with corresponding BUS-Cable etc. Connect PORT JD1(15pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 1 and PORT JD2(15pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 2 with corresponding BUS-Cable Connect PORT JD1(15pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 2 and PORT JD2(15pin) on PCB 3025 of UPS 3 with corresponding BUS-Cable etc. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 5 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. PARALLEL SYSTEM CONCEPT 2.1 Parallel Concept The Ecowave Parallel Concept is new and therefore it needs some explanation. Up to 5 Ecowave UPS’s can be paralleled for redundancy or for power up-grade. The Parallel Architecture is based on a decentralised bypass system i.e. every UPS is provided with its own static and maintenance bypass. In the Parallel System there is always one master and the other units are slaves. If at any time the master is faulty the next UPS (former slave) will immediately take over the master function and the former master will switch off. Every UPS unit in a parallel configuration is provided with an output Parallel Isolator (Q2) which, when opened isolates the corresponding unit from the parallel system. Once Q2 is open there is no power coming out and there is no communication with rest of the parallel system. The Parallel system may be commanded from any unit of the parallel system. Example if the RED MAIN ON-OFF-SWITCH on the control panel is switched off the entire parallel system will disconnect from the load and the load supply will fail. Furthermore if you perform the command ECON MODE on any unit, all the units will transfer the load simultaneously to mains and if you perform the command LOAD ON INVERTER on any unit all the UPS’s will simultaneously transfer the load to the inverters. IMPORTANT: The ECON MODE-Function of a Parallel System is not the same as in the Single ECOWAVE unit. If in an ECOWAVE Parallel System the load is transferred to ECON (load on mains) and if the mains fail the UPS’s will remain on mains (load supply failure) and will not switch back to inverter as in a single UPS system. In the following paragraphs some elements and characteristics will be described in more detail. 2.2 Parallel Isolator Q2 , Every parallel unit has a Parallel Isolator Q2. The Parallel Isolator Q2 is an important element of parallel units. In redundant parallel configurations it is used to isolate a unit from the parallel system without the need to transfer the load to bypass. ================================================================================= = THE PARALLEL ISOLATOR Q2 IS A PART OF EVERY UPS UNIT IN A PARALLEL SYSTEM. ! Q2 OPEN: WHEN Q2 IS OPEN THE CORRESPONDING UPS IS ISOLATED FROM THE LOAD AND FROM THE PARALLEL SYSTEM. THERE IS NO COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE ISOLATED UNIT AND THE REST OF THE PARALLEL SYSTEM.THIS MAY SERVE FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPARATION PURPOSES. Q2 CLOSED: WHEN Q2 IS BEING CLOSED THE CORRESPONDING UPS IS BEING ADDED TO THE REST OF THE PARALLEL SYSTEM. IMPORTANT: BEFORE CLOSING THE Q2 ON A UNIT BE SURE THAT THE STATUS OF THAT UNIT IS SAME AS ON THE REST OF THE UNITS WITH CLOSED Q2. EXAMPLE: IF ALL UPS’s WITH CLOSED Q2 ARE ON INVERTER, MAKE SURE THAT THE UNIT ON WHICH ISOLATOR Q2 IS BEING CLOSED IS ALSO ON INVERTER. ================================================================================= = ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 6 newave OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ ON 2.3 Main Red “ON-OFF”- Switch ( OFF ) The Parallel system may be commanded from any unit of the parallel system. For example if the RED MAIN ON-OFF-SWITCH on the control panel is switched off the entire parallel system will disconnect from the load and the load supply will fail. ================================================================================ DO NOT PRESS THE MAIN RED SWITCH (WITH PLASTIC COVER) ON THE CONTROL PANEL OF ANY UPS EXCEPT IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. ! IF YOU PRESS THE MAIN RED SWITCH ON ANY UNIT OF THE PARALLEL SYSTEM WHILE THE LOAD IS BEING SUPPLIED THE LOAD POWER SUPPLY WILL BE INTERRUPTED AND THE LOAD WILL CRASH ! ================================================================================ 2.4 Maintenance Bypass (IA1) The concept of the Maintenance Bypass in Parallel systems is different from the one in single UPS systems. There are two types of Parallel Systems: ================================================================================ IN PARALLEL SYSTEMS THE MAINTENANCE BYPASS IS CONNECTED IN PARALLEL ! ================================================================================ 2.4.1 Redundant Parallel Systems In redundant parallel systems the Maintenance Bypass of a UPS unit, which needs to be disconnected, will not be used. Instead, by simply opening the Parallel Isolator Q2 one may disconnect the desired unit from the Parallel System. It is now possible to operate or shut down this unit without influencing the rest of the parallel system. 2.4.2 Power Parallel Systems First transfer load to mains on any control panel of the parallel system. Once the load is on static bypasses it is possible to switch on the Maintenance Bypass on all units. In order to isolate the UPS’s it is necessary to open the parallel isolator Q2. 2.5 ECON- Function in Parallel Systems The ECON -Function of a Parallel System is not the same as in the Single ECOWAVE unit. If in an ECOWAVE Parallel System the load is transferred to ECON (load on mains) and if the mains fails the UPS’s will remain on mains (load supply failure) and will not switch back to inverter as in a single UPS system. ================================================================================ THE ECOWAVE PARALLEL SYSTEM IS NOT PROTECTED IF OPERATING IN THE ECON-MODE. IN THE EVENT OF A MAINS FAILURE THE LOAD WILL NOT BE ! SUPPLIED ANYMORE FROM THE UPS PARALLEL SYSTEM. ================================================================================ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 7 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. COMMISSIONING OF PARALLEL SYSTEMS ============================================================================= ALL OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION REGARDING THE PARALLEL SYSTEM MUST BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL TRAINED ! BY NEWAVE OR BY ITS AUTHORISED PARTNERS. ============================================================================= 3.1 Introduction The commissioning of the ECOWAVE Parallel System is relatively simple. Nevertheless before commissioning the System pleas read these instructions carefully. ================================================================================ THE ECOWAVE OPERATING MANUAL , PART 1: SINGLE UNITS IS TO BE CONSIDERED AS A PART OF THIS MANUAL. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ! COMMISSION A PARALLEL ECOWAVE SYSTEM WITHOUT ALSO READING CAREFULLY THE OPERATING MANUAL OF ECOWAVE PART 1: SINGLE UNITS WHICH IS DELIVERED TOGETHER WITH THIS OPERATING AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION. ================================================================================ ============================================================================= ALL THE OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION REGARDING THE PARALLEL SYSTEM MUST BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL TRAINED ! BY NEWAVE OR BY ITS AUTHORISED PARTNERS. ============================================================================= The manufacturer will take no responsibility for any personal or material damage caused by wrong manipulations. 3.2 START-UP of the ECOWAVE Parallel System In the following paragraphs the start-up of the redundant and power parallel systems are described. Before the parallel system is activated all single units will be started independently and then will be switched into a parallel system by means of the Parallel Isolator Q2. =============================================================================== ! BEFORE STARTING-UP THE UPS SYSTEM VERIFY THAT ALL THE INPUT, OUTPUT AND BATTERY CABLING ARE PERFORMED CORRECTLY. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== ! MAKE SURE THAT THE MAINTENANCE BYPASS (IA1) IS OPEN “OFF” (Position DOWN), ON EVERY UPS UNIT OF THE PARALLEL SYSTEM. MAKE SURE THAT THE PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2) IS OPEN “O” (Position OFF), ON EVERY UPS UNIT OF THE PARALLEL SYSTEM. =============================================================================== ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 8 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 3.2.1 START-UP of all single UPS units independently Start-up of UPS 1 (MASTER UPS): 1) Make sure all connections (input and output cabling) have been performed correctly 2) Make sure all the loads are disconnected - Close the input Line Fuses( F1 Rectifier-Line and F2 Bypass-Line) upwards - Make sure the battery fuses of the UPS are inserted correctly - Close the battery fuseholder ( F4) upwards. - Close the fuse ( F3) upwards. 3) Make sure the MAINTENANCE BYPASS (IA1) is open in position “OFF” 4) 5) Make sure the PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2) is open in position “0” (OFF) Press red Main Switch ON/OFF on the control panel to start-up UPS. After a short time the ECOWAVE will be switched on and the corresponding LED-Indicators on the control panel will turn on. Transfer load to inverter mode by means of command “INVERTER MODE” on control panel. The UPS is now in ON-LINE-Mode (highest degree of load protection): Check the LED-Indicators SITUATION: LED LINE 2 lit, colour green LED BATTERY lit, colour green LED LINE 1 lit, colour green 6) 7) LED INV and LED BYPASS : If the green LED-Indicator LED INV is green and LED BYPASS is not lit , the UPS is in the ON-LINE-Mode. If the green LED-Indicator LED BYPASS is green and LED INV is not lit , the UPS is in the OFF-LINE-Mode. At this stage UPS 1 is operating correctly as a single UPS unit but is not supplying the load and it is not yet communicating with the rest of parallel system because Q2 is open. Start-up of UPS 2: To start-up UPS 2, repeat all the steps from 1) to 7) as for UPS 1. Start-up of UPS 3, UPS 4, UPS 5: To start-up UPS 3, UPS 4, UPS 5, repeat all the steps from 1) to 7) as for UPS 1. 3.2.2 Switching the single units into parallel operation (START-UP of Parallel system) Before starting-up the Parallel System it is of great importance to verify and perform the following steps: STEP 1: BEFORE STARTING THE PARALLEL SYSTEM MAKE SURE THAT THE LOAD IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE PARALLEL SYSTEM I.E. VERIFY THAT THE LOAD SWITCH IN LOAD DISTRIBUTION BOARD IS DISCONNECTED. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 9 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ STEP 2: VERIFY CORRECT CONNECTION OF BUS COMMUNICATION CABLES AS FOLLOWS: 25 pin BUS CABLE: STARTS ON UPS 1 ON PORT JD4 (ON PCB 3025) AND GOES TO UPS 2 ON PORT JD3 (ON PCB 3025) STARTS ON UPS 2 ON PORT JD4 (ON PCB 3025) AND GOES TO UPS 3 ON PORT JD3 (ON PCB 3025) etc. DO NOT REVERSE PORTS ! 15 pin BUS CABLE: STARTS ON UPS 1 ON PORT JD1 (ON PCB 3025) AND GOES TO UPS 2 ON PORT JD2 (ON PCB 3025) STARTS ON UPS 2 ON PORT JD1 (ON PCB 3025) AND GOES TO UPS 3 ON PORT JD2 (ON PCB 3025) etc: STEP 3: VERIFY THAT ALL UPS UNITS ARE OPERATING ON INVERTER. STEP 4: CLOSE PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2) POSITION “ON” FIRST ON UPS 1 CLOSE PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2) SEQUENTIALLY ON UPS2, UPS3, UPS4 AND UPS5. THE SYSTEM IS NOW OPERATING IN PARALLEL WITHOUT LOAD. STEP 5: CONNECT THE LOAD ON THE OUTPUT DISTRIBUTION BOARD. THE SYSTEM IS NOW OPERATING IN PARALLEL WITH LOAD. 3.3 SHUT DOWN of the Parallel System The SHUT DOWN of parallel systems can be performed very easily. =========================================================================== IF YOU PERFORM THE SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE ACCORDING TO THIS PARAGRAPHS THE LOAD WILL NOT BE SUPPLIED BY THE UPS SYSTEM ! ANYMORE, THEREFORE MAKE SURE THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO SHUT-DOWN THE UPS SYSTEM. =========================================================================== STEP 1: MAKE SURE THAT THE LOAD IS DISCONNECTED AND NEEDS NO SUPPLY FROM THE UPS SYSTEM STEP 2: PRESS THE RED MAIN SWITCH “ON-OFF” TO DISCONNECT THE UPS-SYSTEM FROM THE LOAD. NOW ALL THE UPS ARE DISCONNECTED FROM THE OUTPUT. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 10 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ STEP 3: OPEN THE PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2) TO POSITION “OFF” OF EVERY UNIT. STEP 4: OPEN ALL FUSES F1(RECTIFIER), F2 (BY-PASS LINE), F3 (OUTPUT LOAD) AND F4 (BATTERY) ON THE FRONT OF UPS.. ========================================================================== OPEN ALSO BATTERY FUSES OF THE SUPPLEMENTARY BATTERY CABINET, ! ========================================================================== STEP 5: ALL THE UPS’s ARE NOW VOLT-FREE. 3.4 Isolation of a faulty UPS in a REDUNDANT Parallel-Configuration If a fault occurs on one unit of a REDUNDANT Parallel System the faulty UPS will shut down automatically and the rest of the system will continue to supply the load (redundancy) without switching over to bypass. ========================================================================== DO NOT CLOSE THE MAINTENANCE BYPASSes. THIS SYSTEM IS A REDUNDANT SYSTEM . ! ========================================================================== If one desires to isolate the faulty unit from a REDUNDANT Parallel System for reparation and service purposes perform following steps: STEP 1: OPEN PARALLEL ISOLATOR Q2 to position “O” OF THE FAULTY UPS UNIT. The corresponding unit is separated from the load and from the parallel system (there is no communication with other UPS’s). STEP 2: ONLY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL MAY REPAIR THE FAULTY UPS UNIT. 3.5 Fault of one UPS unit of POWER PARALLEL System If a fault occurs on one unit of a POWER Parallel System the faulty UPS will shut down and the load will automatically and simultaneously be transferred to all the static bypasses ( lack of redundancy). If it is desired to repair the system it is necessary to: STEP 1: WHILE THE LOAD IS ON STATIC BYPASS ONE MAY CLOSE THE MAINTENANCE BYPASSES (IA1) POSITION “ON” (UP) ON EVERY UPS-UNIT. THE LOAD IS SUPPLIED DIRECTLY FROM THE MAINS AND IS UNPROTECTED. STEP 2: OPEN PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2) TO POSITION “O” OFF ON ALL THE UNITS. THE UNITS ARE NOW SEPARATED ONE FROM THE OTHER AND MAY BE SERVICED BY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 11 newave OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 4. CONTROL PANEL The CONTROL PANEL of the ECOWAVE has additional functions for the PARALLEL System. In the following Paragraphs we will describe only those functions which are specific for PARALLEL operation. The operations and functions for a single UPS unit are described in the ECOWAVE OPERATING MANUAL for SINGLE UPS Units. ============================================================================= ALL THE OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION REGARDING THE PARALLEL SYSTEM MUST BE PERFORMED BY AUTHORISED PERSONNEL TRAINED ! BY NEWAVE OR BY ITS AUTHORISED PARTNERS. ============================================================================= 4.1 Functions and Operations Single UPS Unit The single UPS Unit Functions and Operations are described in detail in the ECOWAVE OPERATING MANUAL for SINGLE UPS Units. If a UPS Unit is isolated from the rest of the REDUNDANT PARALLEL SYSTEM by opening the PARALLEL ISOLATOR (Q2)(according to Paragraph 3.4 of this Manual) this unit will become a single unit and may be operated independently from the rest of the Parallel System (see Chapter 3 of ECOWAVE OPERATING MANUAL for SINGLE UPS Units). 4.2 Functions and Operations of a Parallel System In an ECOWAVE Parallel System there is no Central Control Panel. Parallel System Functions and Operations may be performed from the CONTROL PANEL of any UPS unit of the Parallel System. ON 4.2.1 Main Red “ON-OFF”- Switch ( OFF ) of a Parallel System By pressing (on any unit of the Parallel System) the Main Red “ON-OFF”- Switch in a Parallel System ECOWAVE, the load will be disconnected from all the UPS’s in the Parallel System and the load supply will be interrupted (!). If the Main Red “ON-OFF”- Switch in a Parallel System ECOWAVE is pressed again (on any unit of the Parallel System) all the UPS’s will start-up automatically and take over the load. =============================================================================== Note: If a UPS Unit is isolated from a Redundant Parallel System by opening its Q2 and you press its Main Red “ON-OFF”- Switch only that UPS will shut-down without influencing the rest of the Parallel System. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 12 newave OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 4.2.2 Operative Function “INV ON” of a Parallel System If the Function “INV ON” in a Parallel System is selected and entered on any Control Panel all the UPS’s will automatically and simultaneously transfer the load to INVERTER. Perform following steps: STEP 1: Select the MENU: FUNCT and press ENTER to confirm. SEL: FUNCT. MEASURE ALARMS SET-UP ECON. INV. ON BATT. S/N STEP 2: SEL: Select Function: INV. ON and press ENTER to confirm. Now the load is supplied by the inverters of all the units simultaneously. 4.2.3 Operative Function “ECON” of a Parallel System If the Function “ECON” in a Parallel System is selected and entered on any Control Panel all the UPS’s will automatically and simultaneously transfer the load to Bypass (Mains Power Supply). Perform following steps: STEP 1: Select the MENU: FUNCT and press ENTER to confirm. SEL: FUNCT. MEASURE ALARMS SET-UP ECON. INV. ON BATT. S/N STEP 2: SEL: Select Function: ECON and press ENTER to confirm. The ECON Function of a Parallel System is not the same as in the Single ECOWAVE unit. If in an ECOWAVE Parallel System the load is transferred to ECON (load on mains) and if the mains fail the UPS’s will remain on mains (load supply failure) and will not switch back to inverter as in a single UPS system. ================================================================================ THE ECOWAVE PARALLEL SYSTEM IS NOT PROTECTED IF OPERATING IN THE ECON-. IN THE EVENT OF A MAINS FAILURE THE LOAD WILL NOT ! BE SUPPLIED ANYMORE FROM THE UPS PARALLEL SYSTEM. ================================================================================ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ nw-Operating Manual Ecowave Parallel Systems 9808 - vx - E Page 13 OPERATING MANUAL ECOWAVE FOR PARALLEL SYSTEMS newave Advanced Power Protection ________________________________________________________________________________________ 5.
