NEW VIRTUAL ISSUE OF REAL ESTATE ECONOMICS
As editors, one of our goals is to raise the
awareness of the topics covered by articles
appearing in Real Estate Economics. Thus,
we decided to commission special virtual
issues of Real Estate Economics that contain
curated collections of articles appearing in
previous volumes of Real Estate Economics
on topics attracting the attention of the
broader economics and finance profession.
For example, the Great Recession and
Financial Crisis was caused in part by factors
associated with real estate assets and real
estate securities. Contributors to Real Estate
Economics have published on these topics
for many years. Thus, as a service to the
profession, we feel that highlighting the
findings from these articles will aid future
research in discovering new insights.
We are very pleased to present the first
virtual issue, co-edited by Andra Ghent
(University of Wisconsin-Madison) and
Vincent Yao (Georgia State University) that
highlights research on household decisions
regarding residential mortgages.
Please visit:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.111
1/(ISSN)15406229/homepage/VirtualIssuesPage.html
In an overview to this issue, Ghent and Yao
provide an excellent review of the literature
connecting articles appearing in Real
Estate Economics with recent research
efforts. Their article covers four areas: (1)
the role of intermediaries such as mortgage
brokers; (2) how households choose
between a fixed and an adjustable rate
mortgage; (3) how homeowners choose
between other features of mortgage
contracts; and (4) reverse mortgages.
It is our hope that the members of AREUEA
and the boarder economics and finance
profession will find this summary of the
literature useful as they look to expand on
our knowledge of issues related to housing
markets and residential mortgage markets.

PARTY CHICAGO STYLE by Morris Davis
I find the AREUEA January meetings
incredibly fun. We discuss all stripes of
Economics, reconnect with old friends, and
occasionally yell at each other (mostly for the
right reasons). These meetings bring us
together, give us perspective on the field and
remind us of how far we have advanced as a
profession. I think these meetings are cause
for a celebration.
Although perhaps Sheridan Titman
(AREUEA-ASSA Conference Chair) and the
gang now regret it, I was asked to help turn
the AREUEA Saturday night membership
reception "up to 11." If we are going to work
hard, then darn it, we should play hard as
well.
Chicago is a place where one just does not
party lightly. There are standards in this
town. So we sharpened our pencils and
priced our options. And we decided on....
THE HOUSE OF BLUES!!!!
The entirety of the ASSA will be jealous at
the awesomeness of this party that is within
1/2 mile of our conference hotel, the
Sheraton Grand Chicago. There will be
ridiculously savory food and craft beers as
well as other libations, starting at 7:00 PM.
Then, THE CONTRACTIONS,
unconscionably but likely accurately
labeled as "Madison's worst band," will
begin its off-key caterwauling at 9:30 PM. I
know The Contractions unfortunately all too
well, as I have been a member since 1997.
For those of you that like a bottom line:
Please join us, Saturday, January 7 at The
House of Blues in Chicago. Doors open at
7:00 PM. The Contractions play at 9:30
PM.
This event is a great time for meeting with
your colleagues, making new connections,
and lots of fun. Make sure to wear your
conference badge for admission. Don't be
lame. Be there.
Join us at the House of Blues
Chicago for a fun and unique event
featuring a performance by some
of AREUEA’s own…

CONFERENCE–CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of Real Estate Economics,
Dedicated to REITs and Real Estate
Investment
Real Estate Economics, the journal of the
American Real Estate and Urban Economics
Association (AREUEA), in conjunction with
the National Association of Real Estate
Investment Trusts (NAREIT), is pleased to
announce a call for papers related to real
estate investment trusts (REITs) and other
types of real estate investment. In
conjunction with the conference there will be
a special issue of Real Estate Economics
that is dedicated to papers on similar topics.
The third bi-annual Real Estate Research
Conference is to be held in New York City on
June 5, 2017 in conjunction with
REITWeek®, NAREIT’s Investor Forum®. It
is expected that four to six papers will be
included in the conference. One paper
presented at the Real Estate Research
Conference will be selected “Best Paper,”
and its author(s) will be awarded a prize of
$5,000. Travel expenses (transportation and
one night’s lodging) for invited presenters will
be covered by NAREIT.
Authors responding to this CFP can choose
to have manuscripts considered for both the
conference and publication in a special issue
of Real Estate Economics. Authors can also
choose to submit their paper only for
conference consideration or only for special
issue consideration.
Authors are encouraged to submit the results
of original research, both theoretical and
empirical, on all questions bearing on REITs
and other types of real estate investment.
Authors who wish to make use of the FTSE
NAREIT PureProperty® Index Series should
contact Brad Case at NAREIT, who will
assist in arranging free access to the index
data for academic research purposes. Areas
of research may include, but are not limited
to:

Industrial organization issues for REITs
and other types of real estate
investment, e.g., financing, capital
structure, executive compensation,
operating expenses, economies of
scale, property type or geographic
focus/diversification, ownership
structure, etc.

real estate assets, whether securitized
or not and whether listed or not,
including the existence of premia
associated with illiquidity, opacity,
governance, etc.
Investment characteristics of REITs
and other types of real estate
investment both within real estate
portfolios and in mixed-asset portfolios,
e.g., returns, volatility,
correlation/cointegration, liquidity,
momentum, etc., whether using shorthorizon or long-horizon data.
The relationships among different
types of real estate investment
including REITs, listed property
companies, private equity real estate
funds (including limited partnerships),
co-investments, and other types of real
estate investments held directly or
through separate accounts.
To be considered for the Real Estate
Research Conference, authors should
submit manuscripts electronically by
February 15, 2017.
Those authors who wish their paper to be
considered for the REE special issue only
should submit by April 1, 2017.

emailed to:
Timothy Riddiough
Senior Special Issue Editor
University of Wisconsin – Madison
[email protected]
Submitting authors should clearly indicate
whether they wish their paper to be
considered for the conference only, the
special issue only, or both the conference
and special issue.
Authors who would like their manuscripts
considered for publication in the special
issue of Real Estate Economics should
NOT submit via the REE submission
process; instead, they should submit
directly to Professor Riddiough and request
that he forward the manuscript to the
special issue editors for separate
evaluation.
The Real Estate Research
Conference will be held June 5,
2017 in New York City.

ABOUT OUR ASSOCIATION…
The American Real Estate and Urban
Economics Association (AREUEA) was
originated at the 1964 meeting of the Allied
Social Science Association (ASSA) in
Chicago. AREUEA grew from a need for
more information and analysis in the fields of
real estate development, planning, and
economics.
AREUEA has advanced the scope of
knowledge in these disciplines and has
facilitated the exchange of information and
opinions among academic, professional, and
governmental people who are concerned
with urban economics and real estate issues.
AREUEA's journal, Real Estate Economics,
is published quarterly and is distributed on a
calendar year subscription basis. The journal
contains research and scholarly studies of
current and emerging real estate issues.
The Association holds three conferences
each year. The conferences are an excellent
opportunity for members and non-members
to catch up on the most up-to-date research
available in the fields of real estate and
urban economics.
