Lake Minnetonka Garden Club Program 2015 2016 is a very special year for our club! Zone XI has been honored to host the 2016 Annual Meeting for the Garden Club of America, which will be held at the Depot Renaissance Hotel in Minneapolis. Many of this year’s programs are designed to provide you with information, experience and confidence to fully participate in this event. Monday, June 29, 2015 – 1 p.m. “Venero Gardens and Nursery Tour” Join other LMGC members for a presentation on hostas and other shade perennials by Dori Venero. Then tour the Venero Gardens and Nursery before it closes at the end of the summer. Thursday, July 16, 2015 – 1 p.m. “Postcards of the Journey”– GCA Annual Meeting Flower Show – Woodhill Barn Every GCA Annual Meeting features a Flower Show. The 2016 Annual Meeting Flower Show will be Co-Chaired by Pat Fernandez (LMGC Affiliate) and Mary Korkor (Kettle Moraine GC). Themed to highlight the beauty of the Midwest, Postcards from the Journey, will put the spotlight on the Heartland’s Sky Blue Waters, Amber Fields and Green Forests! Pat serves as Zone II Flower Show Rep, is in the GCA Judging Program for Floral Design and Chairs the Newport Flower Show (a sanctioned non-GCA Major Flower Show). Pat will present the official schedule and share with LMGC members the development of the flower show schedule and opportunities to enter. Lisa Melmed (LMGC) is also part of the Photography Committee for the Flower Show and will be helpful as a resource for those members who may want to enter in that division. Hostesses: Roberta Dressen, *Rae Pesek, Ethel Smith Thursday, August 20, 2015 – 1 p.m. “All Aboard!” – Depot Renaissance Hotel, Minneapolis Come and see where the 2016 Annual Meeting will be held, the beautiful Depot Renaissance Hotel. Pat Nannally, coordinator of the River Life Program, will give a presentation on the history of our Mississippi National River and Parks. Hostesses: Libby Andrus, Kathleen Wanner, *Susie Wilson Thursday, September 17, 2015 – 1 p.m. “Spring Flowering Bulbs: Best Bloomin’ Bulbs in Town!” – Wayzata Meeting Room With autumn in the air it’s the time of year to be thinking of spring bulbs! A presentation developed by the Hennepin County Master Gardeners will be given by some of our own Master Gardeners, presenting a wealth of “how to” information on spring bulbs that will be helpful when the LMGC is serving as hosts to the GCA Annual Meeting in May. Did you know that Minnesota is one of the best places to grow bulbs because of its cold winters? Members will also have the opportunity to shop for bulbs from our own “Best Bloomin’ Bulbs” Sale, providing funds for the Wayzata Depot Garden. Hostesses: Liz Hawn, *Elise Kingman, Sara Pierson Thursday, October 15, 2015 – 1 p.m. “How Our Gardens Impact Climate Change” – The Home of Muffy MacMillan Will Steger, a recognized authority for the Polar Regions and best known for his legendary polar explorations, is a formidable voice calling for understanding and preservation for the Arctic and the Earth. Minneapolis is the home of Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy, Non-Profit Organization. Kristen Poppleton, Director of Education at Will Steger Foundation, will give us a slide presentation on how our gardens impact climate change. We will offer a workshop given by talented Vicki Greer of Harvest Home. This will be followed by our meeting and a presentation. As we will be the host club for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Day for the GCA Meeting, members will be presented the key information, facts and history of our beautiful Arboretum to share with the annual meeting attendees. In addition, LMGC members will learn more about opportunities available to participate in the 2016 Annual Meeting including the Boutique and Flower Show Preview Party and the GCA Business Sessions. We will also use this time to get ‘up to speed’ on our volunteer duties. 2016 Volunteer Chairs, Isabel Keating and Mary Jackley will finalize volunteer sign ups and distribute volunteer uniforms.
