June - Gladstone School District

June, 2013
Stu Evans, Gladstone High School principal, to retire July 1st
E
ach year, the District awards an Honorary Diploma to
an individual who has significantly impacted the
District. This year, the Class of 2013 honors one of
its own … principal, Stu Evans.
Evans led Gladstone High School through an extensive school renovation project which included a new Applied
Science & Technology Center. He struggled with tight budgets, implemented
new programs, spent quality time with
students and faculty, thought outside the
box to present innovative ideas, juggled
endless priorities, attended meetings
throughout the state, and remained calm
and focused 24/7.
But circumstances often
dictate change and necessitate stepping
back, evaluating priorities, and choosing
a different path. Health concerns have
forced Stu to do just that; and he’ll retire
on July 1st after 13 years of serving as
Gladstone High School’s principal.
He plans to spend plenty of
time with his family during his retirement; but knowing Stu Evans means
never quitting. Don’t be surprised if you
find this veteran Gladiator cruising the
halls in the years to come, just checking
to make sure everything is going according to plan. His plan.
Gladstone High School will
never be the same because of the character and conviction of
one Stu Evans. “Okay” was never enough; “Good” was better;
but “Outstanding” was the standard expectation of academic
success for the 700+ students of GHS - and that’s precisely
what happened. Gladstone High School, once again, received
an “Outstanding” rating on the Oregon Department of Education’s most recent report card.
Each individual has always been important to Evans.
His physical presence in the hallways, classrooms and cafeteria
attest to his caring and approachable manner, giving students
and staff the comfort of easily accessing him regardless of the
magnitude of the situation. His calm, confident and effective
way of handling even the most challenging situations resulted
in admiration, respect, and a gentle brand of strength few could
equal.
Under his leadership, many significant changes took place. At
the heart of his mission, Evans was instrumental in developing
core programs around the three “Rs”, which he considered the
building blocks for a solid educational foundation. With a
dedicated staff of professional educators backing him, GHS
ranked among the highest rated schools in Oregon with an
average score of 88% in writing and 93%
in reading.
Evans has been a good role model
for his staff and for building trust among
his peers. Always appreciative of his staff,
in a recent note to teachers, Evans wrote,
“You are to be commended for the tough
and often times thankless work you do,
day in and day out. You do make a difference in our students’ lives. You never
know when some student will come back
to you and say thanks for being there. Its
been a pleasure to work along side and
with you over the years.”
Evans advocated Advanced
Placement classes and invited Clackamas
Community College professors to the GHS
campus so students could earn college
credits while in high school. Some
students have accumulated as many as 30
college credit hours prior to high school
graduation.
“Thinking outside the box” was
an Evans mantra. Always an advocate for
improvement, he eagerly considered ideas that, to some,
seemed w-a-y outside the box; many of these ideas are in place
and thriving today.
The interim principal is GHS Vice Principal, Patti
Alexander. Jere Applebee, Athletic Director, is the interim
assistant principal.
Evans’ legacy will live on. Few have held the position for as
long. Few have seen as much change. None will be as missed.
