Ezra K. Zilkha FIAF’s mission is to create
and offer New Yorkers
innovative and unique
programs in education
and the arts that explore
the evolving diversity and
richness of French cultures.
We seek to generate new
ideas and promote crosscultural dialogue through
partnerships and new
platforms of expression.
Bienvenue !
The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) is a leading French
language and cultural center. A private, American 501(c)(3) not-forprofit organization incorporated in the state of New York, FIAF is
not an agency of the French government.
With top-quality language classes and a broad
range of innovative programming, FIAF is New
York’s premier destination for all things French. Two
satellite locations in Brooklyn and Montclair, New
Jersey expand FIAF’s reach well beyond Manhattan.
Crossing the Line, FIAF’s flagship contemporary
arts festival, brings groundbreaking and genredefying new work to New York each fall, providing
a prestigious platform for artists on both sides
of the Atlantic.
Throughout the year, FIAF offers dynamic cultural
programming in both French and English,
presenting live performances, film screenings,
talks, and art exhibitions.
The FIAF Language Center offers year-round
French classes for adults and children, with
special summer programs for toddlers and kids.
Our effective Alliance Française method helps
students learn quickly and easily, while our
flexible class schedules can accommodate
even the busiest New Yorkers.

FIAF is the region’s leading destination for French language education.
A broad range of courses for all ages and abilities ensures that FIAF
offers a French class for everyone.
FIAF’s commitment to excellence in teaching means small classes,
intensively trained teachers, and state-of-the-art technological
resources. All FIAF teachers are native French speakers.

Online Learning
New Challenges
FIAF’s Language Center welcomes nearly 6,000
students each year. All FIAF Students enjoy the
benefits of FIAF Membership, including free
weekly CinéSalon screenings and access to the
extensive Culturethèque digital library. Learning
French at FIAF is a truly immersive experience,
both in the classroom and outside it.
FIAF’s Montclair, New Jersey satellite welcomes
Francophiles from around the state in its new
downtown location. FIAF Montclair hosts CinéKids
film screenings in partnership with the Montclair
Art Museum, as well as talks by renowned authors
and popular social events like Rendez-Vous and
Bastille Day in addition to its wide array of French
classes for kids, teens, and adults.
Learning French at FIAF is more flexible than ever
before. One-on-one video chat tutoring allows
students to fit French into their busy schedules.
Speedlingua™, FIAF’s digital independent study
resource, offers students the opportunity to
practice and perfect their pronunciation from
the comfort of their own homes.
As competition has increased in New York and
the Tri-State area, FIAF has restructured and
refocused its Language Center to adapt to the
changing environment. More flexible course
offerings give busy New Yorkers many options
for session length and weekly commitment,
while innovative children’s programs welcome
kids of all ages and abilities to take part in fun
French activities. French language education
remains the core of FIAF’s mission, and we strive
to be the very best in New York.
Our courses range from general French classes
to dynamic workshops and classes targeted
to specific language skills or cultural themes,
including cinema, literature, economics, and
history. For those interested in conducting
business in or with French-speaking countries,
FIAF offers classes and workshops on pertinent
topics, such as business French, legal French,
pronunciation, and translation.
FIAF also offers specialized English classes
for French-speakers working in New York.
Brooklyn
Established in fall 2012 and housed in the
International School of Brooklyn, FIAF’s Brooklyn
satellite has quickly grown into a thriving language
center for students of all ages, bringing the best
of French to beautiful Carroll Gardens.
Teachers’ Professional
Development
FIAF is dedicated to providing high-quality,
innovative French language education. For
the seventh consecutive year, the successful
Teachers’ Professional Development Workshop
program welcomed public and private school
French teachers from the Tri-State area for six key
workshops. Skilled FIAF instructors collaborated
with global experts to create tailored presentations
for each workshop, solidifying FIAF’s reputation as
a leading center for French language instruction.

in Schools
With half-day classes for children ages three and
four, FIAF’s Preschool offers a fun, immersive
learning experience for little ones. Graduates of
our Preschool have been accepted into leading
French, bilingual, international, and American
schools, such as the Lycée Français de New York,
the Franco-American School of New York, the
Chapin School, and the Speyer Legacy School.
Since its establishment in fall 2012, the Preschool
has expanded in size and become a great success.
FIAF offers French classes, fun workshops, and
exciting activities targeting the specific needs
of each age group, from toddlers to teens. With
project-based curricula and a hands-on approach
to learning, the FIAF method is as engaging as
it is effective.
FIAF offers customizable French language
programs before or after school, as well as during
the day as part of in-school enrichment activities.
Highly skilled FIAF teachers travel to schools
in New York and New Jersey, providing immersion
classes tailored to the needs of each individual
school. A new language program in Montclair,
New Jersey offers after-school French classes for
elementary school students and has attracted
nearly 50 students in its first year.
New cooking and art workshops for toddlers
offer exposure to French without the full-session
commitment and have quickly become one of
our most in-demand course offerings.
In addition, Francophone families turn to FIAF
for classes that allow their children to develop
a strong foundation in the French language
while growing up in a bilingual environment.
Our tailored curricula meet the standards of the
French Ministry of Education and are designed
specifically for children who speak French at
home but use English in their everyday life.

Bringing Students to FIAF
FIAF partnered with Louis Vuitton to bring a
pilot in-school arts program to PS 46M in Harlem.
French visual artist Sydney Albertini worked with
a class of 26 seventh-grade students for eleven
weeks to create three-dimensional self-portraits
made from recycled materials.
FIAF is proud to work with GDF Suez to introduce
students from New York public schools to
outstanding contemporary art. In 2013–2014, FIAF
welcomed student groups to all three exhibitions
held in the FIAF Gallery. These visits were led by
FIAF’s Artistic Director or the artists themselves,
broadening students’ horizons and inspiring
creativity and new perspectives.
FIAF’s Young Audience Program is an active
education outreach initiative that introduces
kids to French language and culture. Students
from New York City schools have the opportunity
to attend films, performances, and concerts at
FIAF that have been selected for their artistic
excellence and connection to French and
Francophone cultures.
Louis Vuitton employees exchanged letters with
the students and formed one-on-one relationships
with them as the students prepared to present
their work to the public at a reception in the FIAF
Gallery. The students’ work was displayed for one
week, allowing parents, teachers, and employees of
both FIAF and Louis Vuitton to enjoy the exhibition.

arts festival, drawing international and local
acclaim for its forward-thinking programming
and artistic focus (Culturebot, July 27, 2013).

A three-minute clip of this film was shown on
the Times Square Jumbotrons at 11:57pm every
evening throughout September 2013.
The new partnership with the Hermès Foundation’s

Trophée
des Arts
Gala
FIAF’s annual black-tie Trophée des Arts Gala is an essential fundraising
event that supports FIAF’s cultural and educational programs
throughout the year. The 2013 Gala was the most successful to date,
raising over $1.1 million.
The 2013 Trophée des Arts Gala was held at 583
Park Avenue and attended by over 500 prominent
friends of FIAF. The evening raised a recordbreaking $1.1 million for FIAF’s educational and
cultural programs, thanks in large part to the
support of dinner chairs Robert G. Wilmers, FIAF
Chairman and Chairman & CEO of M&T Bank, and
Dominic Barton, Global Managing Director of
McKinsey & Company.
New this year, the Art de Vivre Award is a glamourous dinner held
at Le Bilboquet that celebrates outstanding contributions to the
promotion of the French art of living in the United States.
The Trophée des Arts honors a distinguished
artist or cultural icon who embodies FIAF’s
mission to encourage cross-cultural exchange.
In 2013, renowned actor Jean Reno presented
the award to César Award-winning actor François
Cluzet. François Cluzet is best known for his
recent role in Les Intouchables and is one of
the true stars of contemporary French cinema.
The Pilier d’Or recognizes a leading business
figure, diplomat, or philanthropist for his/her
outstanding contributions to the French and
North American communities. Carlos Ghosn,
chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance,
received this prestigious award in 2013.

With over 40,000 visitors, Bastille Day 2013 was the largest to date.
The buzz spread well beyond Manhattan, attracting high-profile
media attention and viral Facebook traffic.
Bastille Day on 60th Street
Bastille
Day
On July 14, 2013, FIAF transformed 60th Street
into a festive celebration of all things French
in New York. Dynamic musical and dance
performances electrified the main stage, while
over 70 participating vendors offered the best
of French food, culture, and shopping. More
than 670 visitors had the opportunity to taste
wine, beer, cocktails, and cheese in FIAF’s Tinker
Auditorium, and over 60 lucky attendees won
exceptional prizes in the drawing.
Mentioned in The New York Times, The Village
Voice, The New York Post, Bloomberg Businessweek,
and Gothamist, the 2013 edition of Bastille Day
on 60th Street boosted the visibility of both FIAF
and participating vendors more than ever before.
