April 9 •Palm Sunday
From the Pastor’s Desk…
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today we enter into Holy Week. The drama of our Lord's Passion is set before us in the Church's various liturgical celebrations of this week. In our
own life, I know that sometimes it is tempting to focus on our own
"passion" -- our own struggles with various crosses -- to such an extent
that we forget that our Lord calls us to be people of hope. The cruci!ixion,
of course, is not the end of the story. The resurrection is the source of our hope. There
should be an abiding joy, even in the midst of our struggles.
Pope Francis put it like this:
“Jesus enters Jerusalem. The crowd of disciples accompanies him in festive mood, their garments are stretched out before him, there is talk of the miracles he has accomplished, and
loud praises are heard: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in
heaven and glory in the highest!” (Lk 19:38).
Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy !ills the air. Jesus has awakened great hopes,
especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not
matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings, he has shown the face of
God’s mercy, and he has bent down to heal body and soul.
This is Jesus. This is his heart which looks to all of us, to our sicknesses, to our sins. The love
of Jesus is great. And thus he enters Jerusalem, with this love, and looks at us. It is a beautiful
scene, full of light - the light of the love of Jesus, the love of his heart - of joy, of celebration.
And here the !irst word that I wish to say to you: joy! Do not be men and women of sadness:
a Christian can never be sad! Never give way to discouragement! Ours is not a joy born of
having many possessions, but from having encountered a Person: Jesus, in our midst; it is
born from knowing that with him we are never alone, even at dif!icult moments, even when
our life’s journey comes up against problems and obstacles that seem insurmountable, and
there are so many of them! And in this moment the enemy, the devil, comes, often disguised
as an angel, and slyly speaks his word to us. Do not listen to him! Let us follow Jesus! We accompany, we follow Jesus, but above all we know that he accompanies us and carries us on
his shoulders. This is our joy, this is the hope that we must bring to this world. Please do not
let yourselves be robbed of hope! Do not let hope be stolen -- the hope that Jesus gives us!"
May this Holy Week give you joy and hope in the knowledge that Jesus has conquered sin
and death, and longs to make his victory yours!

Triduum Retreat
Thurs., April 13th, 5pm-Sat., April 15th, 3pm
You are invited to our annual Triduum Retreat, designed to
help high school students truly experience the depth of
Christ’s Passion and Resurrection. This retreat offers activities that help us enter deeply into the most sacred days of the
year, including a trip to the Shrine of Christ’s Passion on Saturday and an Adoration Pilgrimage on Thursday night.
Catholic men between 18 and 45 years old
are invited to a vocation discernment
retreat to be held at St. Procopius Abbey,
Lisle, IL, during the Easter Triduum: from
Holy Thursday, April 13, 4:00 pm, through Easter Sunday, April 16, 1:00 pm.
Join the monks for prayer, work and meals as they
prepare for and celebrate these holy days. This is an
opportunity to share the way of life of the monks and
prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to the
Benedictine way of life. Attendance is free, but space is
limited.
Please contact Fr. James Flint at
[email protected] to reserve a spot.
Participants will join the parish in all planned liturgies and
will offer their presentation of “The Way of the Cross” at
7:30PM on Good Friday. We will also be viewing the movie
“The Passion of Christ”.
Permission forms are online and in the back of Church.
College students home for Easter are welcome to join us for
this retreat as well. If you can’t make the whole retreat, you
can still come with us to the Shrine of Christ’s Passion on Saturday. Lunch is provided. Permission forms and a $20 fee
(for supplies + food) can be brought to the retreat, but please
RSVP to Theresa Simeo in advance.
If you have any questions, please contact Theresa Simeo,

Easter? Where did that Divine Mercy
image come from and what does it mean?
Who was St. Faustina Kowalska?
This day points us to the merciful love of God that
lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery — the whole
mystery of the death, burial and resurrection of
Christ — made present for us in the Eucharist!
Visit the Lighthouse Catholic kiosk in the
West Narthex to pick up a CD ($4),
booklet ($3) or book ($5)
explaining the depth, power, and beauty of
the feast of Divine Mercy Sunday!

The 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual
Appeal is underway!
The Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
(CMAA) helps our parish and the Diocese of Joliet to
provide countless ministries, programs and services to
support our friends and neighbors in immeasurable
ways. Information about the 2017 CMAA and a request
to make a pledge has been sent to all parishioners.
Please review the materials, pray about how you can
help further the ministries funded by our CMAA, and
consider making the most generous gift possible.
Our parish goal is $154,627. Help us to exceed this
goal in paid pledges. Our parish will receive
70% of the amount over goal for use in our parish!
Together, we can continue to spread the Gospel
message in our Diocese through our ministries and help
God hold us in His hands. Thank you in advance for your
support.

ST. MICHAEL CHURCH MILITARY MINISTRY
Prayer for Those Serving
O Merciful Father, You desire the welfare of Your children. Stretch out Your protecting arm over our men
and women in the service. Shield them from every
danger to body, mind and soul. Comfort them in
loneliness, sustain them in hardship, give them
courage they need to fulfill their duty and do Your will
in all things.
Bestow on our leaders and the leaders of the world
the wisdom and prudence, which will bring peace and
justice to all men. This we ask through Jesus Christ,
Your Son, Our Lord.
If you have a family member or relative currently in
one of the services, in a military academy or R.O.T.C.
program, please let us know so we may place their
name on the poster.
Please send your additions or updates to Dan or
Marge Donovan at [email protected] or by
phone at 630-613-9160.
