Conflicts in Texas begin when the U.S. bought the Louisiana Territory
from France.
1821
Moses Austin received a land grant in Texas.
1821
Mexico won its independence from Spain.
1823-1825
Mexico offered new settlers land in Texas at low prices if settlers
agreed to obey Mexican law and practice Catholicism.
1824
Mexico writes a Constitution.
1830
Mexican government stopped immigration from the U.S. and placed
high taxes on goods from the U.S.
1830
U.S. offered twice to buy Texas from Mexico.
1833
General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became President of Mexico.
1833
Stephen Austin traveled to Mexico City and demanded Texas
independence. He was denied and later arrested and jailed.
1835
Texas begins to fight for independence, and Santa Anna sends an
army to stop them.
December 1835 Texans free Santa Antonio from Mexican forces.
1836
The Battle of the Alamo lasted for 12 days before Santa Anna’s army
smashed the walls.
March 2, 1836
American settlers and Tejanos declare independence from Mexico,
establishing the Republic of Texas.
April 21, 1836
Texans attack Santa Anna’s troops at San Jacinto (near Houston) and
take Santa Anna prisoner.
May 14, 1836
Santa Anna signs a treaty that recognizes the independence of
Texas.
September 1836 Sam Houston (elected first president of Texas) asks the U.S. to
annex the new country.
1844
James Polk wins the U.S. presidential election, favors Manifest
Destiny and gaining Texas and Oregon.
1845
Texas becomes a state.
