April 20, 2017
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS),
we welcome you to the tenth annual production of One Night Only, produced by the
incomparable Michael Childers. Tonight, Michael presents “Hello, Jerry!”, featuring some
of the most popular works of legendary composer Jerry Herman.
Proceeds from tonight's event benefit the vital social services of JFS, now celebrating
its 35th Anniversary of serving the Coachella Valley. Under the exemplary leadership of
Executive Director Maureen Forman, this year, JFS will provide mental health counseling,
senior care, emergency financial assistance and other critical services to more than
3,000 men, women and children.
We are also the largest provider of social services to the Jewish Community in the
Valley. Your support tonight is crucial to helping JFS continue to provide quality services
to those in need throughout the Valley. JFS is a non-sectarian, non-profit organization
that provides an array of counseling and social services to those in need regardless of
religion, age, income, gender, ethnicity, national origin, disability or sexual orientation.
Much of the success of One Night Only tonight can be attributed to the leadership of
our extraordinary honorary co-chairs: Barbara Fremont, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller,
and Harold Matzner. We extend our deepest appreciation to these wonderful community
leaders for their longstanding support of both this event and of JFS.
Special thanks to my event co-chair Terri Ketover for sharing the tremendous
responsibilities of this evening and for her unwavering support. Of course, the Board
extends our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Michael for using his amazing talents
to help JFS provide essential services to our local community.
To all of the performers who have so unselfishly volunteered their time and their talents,
we are extremely grateful! We express our most heartfelt appreciation and sincere
gratitude to all the individuals who worked or volunteered behind the scenes.
Warm regards,

HONORARY CO-CHAIR
Born and raised in New York, Barbara
Gerber Fremont settled in Chicago where she and
her husband Robert added three daughters to their family.
Today, that family has grown to include seven grandchildren as well. Robert
founded Halo Lighting in Chicago in 1956, and later Juno Lighting in 1976, and the success of both companies
enabled Barbara and Bob to become philanthropic leaders of their community. They became active in such
organizations as ORT, Jewish United Fund of Chicago, and Mt. Sinai Service Club. Their love of music is reflected
in their long time support of the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic, and the Ravinia Music Festival. In
1979, Barbara and Bob began coming out to the desert for the winter, and in 1988 built their home in Rancho
Mirage. They soon became active in the community here as well. Their philanthropy reflects a lifelong interest
in the arts, and both Fremonts have served on the Board of the Palm Springs Friends of the Philharmonic. They
have also been active supporters of Jewish Federation of the Desert, the McCallum Theatre, the Palm Spring
Philharmonic, Coachella Valley Rep, the Literary Society, and of course, Jewish Family Service of the Desert. Bob
passed away in 2012, but Barbara remains an active member of the community, and continues to support the
many organizations to which they have dedicated themselves. She is delighted to share this evening with all of
you, and thanks you for supporting Jewish Family Service of the Desert.
HONORARY CO-CHAIR
Helene Galen was born Helene Caro,
in England, and she moved with her family to
Los Angeles in 1958. She met her husband, Lou Galen
and they were married in 1975. They had 32 happy years of marriage
until he passed away in 2007. Helene had an interesting career in California, working as an Executive at
Frederick’s of Hollywood, where she worked both in their advertising department and retail chain. Taking her
retail experience with her, she later became vice-president and comptroller for Continental Distributors, a
retail jewelry chain. Helene served on the Board of Trans World Bank in Sherman Oaks, a bank founded by her
husband. They bought their Tamarisk home in 1980 from Zeppo Marx, which has been a family residence for
more than 30 years. Helene has also been a member of several other Boards of Trustees including Eisenhower
Hospital. While serving on the Executive Committee of the board of Tamarisk Country Club, she wrote the
unique history of the early days in Palm Springs. Helene serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of
Southern California, and serves on the Board of Overseers for the Keck School of Medicine and the USC Hospital.
She is a member of the Councilors of the Fine Arts School where she and her husband established the Helene
& Louis Galen Ceramic Studio, and the Helene Galen Intermedia Lab. The Galens were the major contributors
to enable the building of USC’s Galen Center, a Basketball Arena that opened in 2006. She is currently on the
Board of Trustees of the Palm Springs Art Museum, the McCallum Theater, the International Film Festival and
is the Chairman of the Foundation Board of the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. Helene participated in its
founding more than 30 years ago. Helene Galen has two daughters and three grandchildren.
HONORARY CO-CHAIR
In New York, Barbara Keller was a
theatre director, producer and business agent
for film industry script supervisors and Board member
of the North Shore Community Arts Center. Her books include Film,
Tape and TV: Where Do I Fit In? and Orgasmic Days in the South of France, where Barbara and husband, Jerry
had a home for 18 years. In the desert, Barbara serves as Trustee for the Desert AIDS Project for which she
chaired the Board and co-chaired seven Steve Chase Awards galas in addition to Dinner @ My Place. Barbara
continues to serve as Vice Chair of the board of the Palm Springs Art Museum where she is past president of
the Museum Associates Council and has acted as chair for key Museum fundraising events. She has served as
Trustee for the McCallum Theatre and Jewish Family Service of the Desert. Barbara is on the advisory boards of
Sunshine Circle, connecting teenagers with Holocaust survivors and Sanctuary Palm Springs, providing LGBT
individuals a safe and supportive home. She feels privileged to share One Night Only Honorary Co-Chair status
with Barbara Fremont, Helene Galen and Harold Matzner and gives kudos to Barbara Fromm and Terri Ketover,
event chairs, for unselfishly donating their time and resources and to the invaluable, innumerable skills of
Executive Producer Ken Katz and to this year’s multi-talented director Jason Graae. Barbara is so appreciative of
Michael Childers for his resolve to accept nothing less than excellence and triumph. What a team! What a One
Night Only!
HONORARY CO-CHAIR
Entrepreneur, humanitarian, and
philanthropist, Harold Matzner has made his
home in the desert for more than 30 years. The owner
of Palm Spring’s popular Spencer’s Restaurant and CEO of a NY/NJ

International Film Festival and founding the successful business concept of targeted “shared mail”. He also
rescued and revived the world famous Palm Springs Tennis Club, turning its lunchroom into Spencer’s, one of
the City’s hottest restaurants. Spencer’s is named after his beloved 110-pound Siberian husky. Harold is in his
9th year as the Chairman of the Board of the McCallum Theatre, his 12th year as Chairman of the Palm Springs
International Film Festival, and is the Executive Vice Chairman of the Palm Springs Art Museum. He serves on

for MS, College of the Desert, Eisenhower Medical Center, Desert AIDS Project, Desert Cancer Foundation, Palm

EVENT CO-CHAIR
Barbara Fromm has been the Event
Co-Chair of Michael Childers’ production of
One Night Only since 2008. Barbara and her husband of
59 years, Bernie, split their time between the communities of Palm
Desert and New York City. Among the many things they share are a commitment and passion for philanthropy.
Here in the desert, Barbara’s many charitable endeavors include serving on the Board of Directors of Jewish
Family Service of the Desert, where she assumed the position of President in April 2016. She also serves on
the Executive Committee, and previously served as Vice President, as well as the co-chair of the annual Patron
Party for a number of years. She is actively involved with numerous fundraising activities with the Palm Springs
Art Museum, including serving on the Boards of the Museum Associates Council and the Annenberg Theater
Council. She is also on the Board of the Israel Cancer Research Fund. Barbara feels privileged to have worked
with the brilliant and talented Michael Childers for the past nine years. She is also grateful for the opportunity to
work closely with her friends and honorary co-chairs Barbara Fremont, Helene Galen, Barbara Keller, and Harold
Matzner, as well as her event co-chair Terri Ketover, in support of the critical work of Jewish Family Service of the
Desert. Barbara and Bernie have instilled their charitable ethics to their three children and six grandchildren,
who continue the family tradition of giving back to the communities in which they live. Barbara holds a Bachelor
of Arts degree in History and Education from Albright College.

With a Ph.D. in psychology from the
University of Miami, Terri’s varied professional
career has included a 9-year term as the Executive
