Nearly 5,000 people sign petition calling on Tasmanian
petrol price investigation
An RACT petition calling on the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to
investigate fuel pricing in Tasmania as a priority has been signed by nearly 5000 people
online and in RACT branches across the state.
RACT chief executive officer Harvey Lennon said the petition had been provided to the ACCC
for its review and action.
“We are not only very pleased with the support shown for the petition, but pleased that
Tasmanians are taking the issue so very seriously and are prepared to put their name to a
call for action,” he said.
Earlier this year Mr Lennon wrote to ACCC chairman Rod Sims suggesting that Tasmania
could provide useful data for an investigation in petrol pricing because it operates in a
separate and distinct island market.
The ACCC had previously announced that it would be investigating three regional or rural
areas across the country.
Mr Lennon said the RACT believes Tasmania would be a sensible choice for such an
investigation and has been consistently calling on support from the ACCC to examine petrol
pricing in Tasmania.
“Tasmania has been experiencing higher than average fuel prices for some time,” he said.
