Kidz to Adultz Middle 2017 Showguide

Kidz to Adultz Middle 2017
What’s the Connection between Donkey’s and the Kidz to Adultz Exhibitions?
Throughout 2017, Disabled Living will be celebrating 120 years of providing services.
Originally established in 1897 as the Band of Kindness, the founders aim was to
encourage children to be kind to animals, in particular donkeys. The thinking was, if
children were kind to animals they would be more considerate to their fellow citizens.
This early work, proved to be very successful with the children turning their attention
to help children who were ‘less well off’ than themselves. In the early 1900’s there
was almost no support for ‘crippled children’, so the society’s focus expanded and a
few years later the charity changed its name to the Crippled Children’s Help Society.
Not very politically correct terminology today, hence the various name changes
of the charity over the years.
The charity was very forward thinking and provided a wide range of services,
including establishing a County Nursing Home in Marple in 1904, which was later
developed into The Children’s Orthopaedic Hospital. The work with children and
young people continued by loaning equipment, providing craft and occupational
classes for young disabled adults and providing respite facilities at a holiday home
‘White Heather’ in North Wales. Today, Disabled Living are still in contact with
people in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s who were patients in the Children’s Hospital
or received help through other services.
From the early years, the founders were well aware of the important role equipment
could play in supporting people to be independent. From the equipment that was
available years ago, to what we have now - there is no comparison. There continues
to be the most amazing innovations in equipment design and Disabled Living
promises you, we will further develop our Kidz to Adultz exhibitions and wider
Disabled Living services to draw your attention to new equipment and services.
As this year progresses, we will share more of our heritage with you through the
exhibitions and other events. We might even ask you to be involved in some of
our projects, so please read our monthly newsletters!

THE MOVE PROGRAMME
Six steps towards an increase in functional mobility.
ASD and Sensory Processing
Our unique theories and a practical approach.
This is a programme to develop functional mobility skills
using a top down model. It is a completely child centred
programme focussing on what is important to the child
and their family. This talk aims to give an overview of the
programme including what it entails and its benefits. Matt
Toms is a Move Programme Consultant. Matt has over 6
years experience of working in a special school using
The Move Programme with pupils aged 2-19 years. Matt
is now a Move Consultant working across Britain on
behalf of The Move Programme.
Our own unique theories on how people on the autistic
spectrum process senses. We will also look at
under-sensitivity which is a problem often overlooked,
yet it can be very dangerous. We'll suggest strategies to
help an individual recognise when they are
over/under-sensitive to something and things they can
do to manage their senses. Learning outcomes are:
Recognising the differences between over and
under-sensitivity and learning how to help someone who
is over or under sensitive to become more independent.

Move Consultant,

Engaging with Young People to Improve
Health Outcomes: ‘Getting on’ with doctors,
nurses and therapists.
Poo Problems
Young people with disabilities and additional needs will
have more frequent visits to healthcare professionals. How
can we ensure young people continue to engage with
healthcare professionals and have positive experiences as
they become more responsible for improving their health
goals? This seminar will highlight the findings of a research
study in which young people were interviewed to consider
the factors that influenced positive and sometimes negative
meetings with healthcare professionals. For young people
with disabilities and additional needs it is important that
both parents and professionals can support them to reach
their health goals and have an improved quality of life.
Dr Jay Vickers,
University of Worcester.
12.30
Bowel problems are common in children, but those with
additional needs, including developmental disabilities
(e.g. autism) and learning difficulties are even more
susceptible. It can be difficult to unpick the cause of the
problems, to know how to address them, or to find help.
Families and professionals may assume that the bowel
problems are an inevitable part of the disability, or
children may be delayed in toilet training because of
them. This seminar will look at common bowel problems, including constipation, soiling, refusing to poo on
the toilet and smearing and make suggestions for
addressing them.

Protecting the Family:
A guide to Wills, Trusts and Power of Attorney.
Finding the Missing Link in the
Manual Handling Experience.
The seminar will provide details of the various Estate
Planning options open to you through Wills, Trusts and
Powers of Attorney. Providing guidance on how you can
implement these tools to protect your family, your assets,
potential inheritance and ensure that your affairs are
looked after should you lose your mental or physical
capacity.
The objectives of this seminar are to offer delegates the
opportunity to explore the ways to improve the manual
handling experience for the child or adult. Outcome:
Delegates will be able to take tips on improving their
handling technique. Delegates will be given the opportunity to review their manual handling practice in order to
improve the experience for all. The session will use
discussion, presentation and some simple practical to
achieve the objective.

Oral Placement Therapy - An innovative approach to
the management of speech, eating, drinking and saliva.
2.00
We will explain the use of oral placement therapy in
managing speech difficulties caused by diagnosis such as
dyspraxia and dysarthria. We will explain the role of oral
placement therapy for managing oral level feeding difficulties
and saliva control. We will demonstrate activities from this
approach to enable people to understand more about the
use of oral placement therapy to develop and improve
skills for speech, eating, drinking and saliva control. The
session will give participants a basic knowledge about the
suitable applications of oral placement therapy and how to
find further information about this technique.
Seminar Room 2 – Jaguar Suite
Sleep issues and strategies to support.
The objective of the seminar is to address sleep issues
when a child has additional needs, why these may occur
and what strategies can be helpful to improve sleep
patterns. Participants attending will have an improved
understanding of sleep patterns and why sleep issues
may occur. They will also have an increased awareness
of strategies to use to support a better night’s sleep.

Assisting families to fly - reducing the stress of air
travel with disabled children and adults.
Appealing the content of an Education,
Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Flying on commercial aircraft can be daunting for families
with disabled children. Booking a flight, arriving at the
airport, boarding and seating in the cabin pose real
challenges to families. What makes this more stressful is
the lack of information and opportunity to try and consider
the equipment and environment ahead of a flight.
Tryb4uFly aim is to support people in a very practical way
so that they can book a flight knowing what to ask for,
what can be expected from airports and airlines and
decide for themselves how they will fly. In our experience,
families are almost relieved to find the options available!
Laxmi will set out parents’/young person’s right to
appeal the content of the EHCP, how the process works
and what parents can expect. The aim is to empower
parents with sufficient knowledge to help them prepare
for an appeal to the Special Educational Needs and
Disability Tribunal.
Graham Race
Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People.
• What can you appeal?
• Setting out the law and explaining parents’ rights.
• Explaining the appeal process including mediation
and the ‘working document’.
• How to lodge a strong appeal.
• The Hearing - what to expect and how you can prepare.
