Each Metro route has a different number and name. The service
name tells which major street, neighborhood or destination it
serves; for example: Rt. 43 Reading Rd., Rt. 17 Mt. Airy or Rt. 51 Clifton-Hyde Park Crosstown.
The destination sign displays the route number and name on the
outside above the windshield and to the left of the front doors.
On newer buses, the route name is shown on a sign inside above
the operator’s area and the route number is shown on a sign on
the outside rear of the bus.
Some routes with the same number have different branches (Rt. 4, Rt. 43). Routes marked in BOLD are express routes,
operating non-stop service along portions of the routes weekdays
only during rush hours (6 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 6 p.m.) All other
routes are local and stop at marked stops along the way.

Your fare, your way
Metro’s new fareboxes offer many ways to pay
your fare with more to come this year:
•U.S. coins (no foreign coins, game tokens, damaged
coins, etc.) Drop coins one at a time to prevent jams.
•U.S. $1, $2, $5 bills (no foreign/counterfeit or damaged
bills.) Make sure to insert flat, dry, unfolded bills one at a
time.
•Transfers issued automatically by the farebox. Insert in
the slot on top of the farebox for validation. Make sure to
keep transfers dry.
•Metro brass ($1.50 with additional cash drop) and silver
($1.75) tokens.
•30-day rolling passes, encoded and priced by zone. Insert
in the slot on top of the farebox the first time you use
them to imprint the start and stop dates, then swipe
them through the farebox after that.
•Metro CPS, UC, Cincinnati State swipe passes.
•Fare Deal swipe cards and monthly stickers. Swipe the
card and show it to the operator.
•Farebox “talks” to ensure proper fare is paid
Coming in 2012:
•Pre-paid stored-value cards in denominations of $10, $20
or $50.
•Go*SMART cards – reusable and reloadable with any
fare amount you choose.
•Ticket vending machine at Government Square for
convenient, 24-hour access.

2.Check the schedule. The name of the route is listed
on the front and inside are all the things you need to
know, like fares and a map of the route. Bus schedules
show the approximate times buses are due at certain
locations along the route (called timepoints). One set
of times is for buses going inbound (toward town)
and the other shows times for buses going outbound
(away from town). Coming soon: real-time arrival
information screens at Government Square.
3.Get on board. Stops are marked with a Metro
sign, an orange
band on a pole,
or a bus shelter,
and are located
about every block
or two. As the
bus approaches,
signal that you
want to ride by
waving your hand,
nodding your head
or stepping forward. When you’re on the bus, pull the
cord about a block before your stop to let the operator
know you’re approaching your destination.
4.It’s only fare. Metro fares are based on how far
you’re riding; the further you go, the more you’ll pay.
5.Sit back and enjoy the ride. Riding the bus lets
you do other things like read the latest bestseller or
catch up on work.
