DESIGN THINKING DAY

Designfest Clonmel in association with Tipperary County Council,
LIT Clonmel and LEO are pleased to announce a Design Thinking
day on Thursday 3rd November. This will be an opportunity for people in the Design and
Enterprise sector to come together to reflect on the opportunities offered by the new
collaborative approaches to design. The day is divided into a workshop in the morning and
a seminar in the afternoon.
Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve complex problems and find
desirable solutions for clients. Design Thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and
systemic reasoning, to explore possibilities of what could be, and to create desired outcomes that
benefit the end-user (the customer).

The overall workshop shape will be: Introduction to Design Thinking; The Design Thinking
Process, what is it? Dolmen case study examples of the implementation of Design Thinking.
1:1 exercise, using practical tools to apply Design Thinking to your own situation.
James Bourke B. Des. (Industrial Design), MIDI, Product/Service Development Practitioner & Innovation
Management Consultant with 25 years’ experience in mentoring, new product/service development and
innovation management for Entrepreneurs and SMEs. He is a founding member and director of
Dolmen,Design established in 1991. His extensive experience in product/service development and R&D,
combined with a complete understanding of the innovation management process enables James to develop
products and services and to advise and consult for a diverse range of clients. James has been recognised
for his design excellence internationally over the years and holds numerous awards.

Con Kennedy will present his research & findings into the Policy Framework in Design in
Enterprise in Ireland and then introduce entrepreneurs who used design to develop their products
with an empathic approach for the end user, and how the design choice they made influences who
buys their products, and how the products are used.
Con Kennedy, M.A.PDP, FIDI, MIDI, Communications Designer, Educator and Researcher. Con has
worked in professional practice for over 20 years and in that time has designed many well-known brands
such as the National Development Plan, Grangecastle, and Greenstar. He has designed annual reports for
Government Departments such as the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands and
corporations such as Providence Resources. His advocacy work includes representation at the council of
the Institute of Designers in Ireland. As a researcher, he has contributed to the Department of Jobs,
Enterprise and Innovation’s Policy Framework on Design Enterprises in Ireland, the first of its kind in 54
years.
