Many years ago, before even time walked on Earth, it was a most wonderful place, full of light.
There were rolling hills of green grass, mountain tops dipped into the clouds and beautiful
creatures that roamed the land. Some had four legs that ran as fast as the wind, some had arms
used to swing from tree branch to tree branch, others had no legs or arms, but instead had fins
that propelled them across the vast ocean. Forests were full of fruit of all kinds, some round
and fuzzy, others long and thin, there were thousands of them. The grass was always tall and
healthy and always growing back. Everything was full of life, except the ocean which didn’t
splash against the shore. It was frozen in time and it stayed utterly still. The Earth was stuck in
a timeless cocoon, it was always sunny, nothing ever changed, and nothing was ever different.
The sun was always up in the sky, always perched up above the clouds, forever lonely. It never
moved, it never dimmed, and it never spoke, it like the ocean was frozen. Since there was no
time, the creatures were out of balance, some slept under the sun, while others were frolicking
in the plains. Centuries after, it was all still the same, same creatures, same tree, same bush,
same everything. Nothing died nor did anything grow. The sun after centuries of watching this
grew bored. It wanted different but since it was stuck up there in the sky, forever immobile and
lonely, it gave up.
Surprisingly, centuries later came something different. A creature with legs; however, instead of
running across the plains it soared up above everything, flying higher and higher with its wings.
The creatures, known as the winged-ones, flew up into the sky past the mountain tops and
clouds, until they seemed to join the sun. The sun, the all-knowing being, didn't know what
they were. He kept watch on them, especially when they would come closer to him, so close he
felt that if they moved any farther they would join him in his eternal and lonely situation.
The more he watched the more he questioned. Where did these creatures come from? Are there
more? Can they speak? What are they? Where did they come from? The more he questioned the
more he wanted answers. He had a plan. He waited until the winged-ones were closest to him.
Then with a voice as smooth and flowing as the wind, but as formidable as a mountain, he said,
“Winged-ones, can you hear me?” As he said this, the winged-ones screeched and dived to the
earth, running, running from him. He was hurt, he didn't think it was possible, but he ached...
for a friend.
After his attempt at conversation with them, he ached for someone to talk to and share things
with for eternity. He grew somber and his eyes lazily trailed over the land in his depression.
He was startled out of his reverie when he heard a voice so smooth dance over the wind to him,
saying, “Hello?” He looked around and saw nothing or anyone, just a trick of my mind.
“Hey, over here!” Said the same voice but it now sounded more as a squeak. He looked around
until he spotted it, a winged-one, and by the looks of it, it was a she. As she danced upon the
wind his light reflected off of her pure-white feathers making her glow. Her eyes were a
beautiful silver that stared back at him. Bemused, he couldn't speak.
“Hello.” She asked.
“Hello?” He replied unsure of this stranger. She let out a squawk that resembled a laugh, in a
way. He was so confused. Why would she be talking to me?
“You really know how to scatter a party.” She replied, amused, looking over him as she beat her
powerful wings and glided against a head wind.
He didn't know what to say to this...insult? In the end he blurted out, “What's your name?”
She answered simply with, “Luna.”
“Sun.”
“I know that, your kind of like a super-star around here.”
“Why am I a super-star?” He asked perplexed.
She looked at him amused, the Emotion of the Day apparently, and said, “Well, you are like the
biggest star up there and your pretty obvious.” He was startled, he knew he was big and all, but
he didn't know he was that big. Now she was the one perplexed, cocking her head to the side.
“You didn't notice this?”
He sighed and replied, “No, I always thought that to all the creatures down there I was small to
their eyes.”
“Nope, not how it works.” He let out a laugh at her answer, feeling stupid for not knowing,
especially since he was the 'all-knowing' being.
“Hey, how about I come up here every once in a while and we will soon you won't be naïve.”
“Oh, joy,” his sarcasm rang clear.
“Yes, yes, it will be,” she said then started to fly away as she squawked, “Bye.”
He stayed frozen not moving an inch even if he could have. What. Just. Happened? He played
this conversation over and over in his head trying to figure it all out. Then as he did he grew
excited and thought she talked to me, she wasn't scared, she didn't even seem perturbed. He
grew impatient and wanted to talk again with her, ask what she feels? How does she fly? Also
about how she's not scared of him, like most are.
Luna, to Sun's delight, kept up a routine and visited him every time she was able to. Of course
Luna had to rest otherwise she would fall down from the sky. Nevertheless, both cherished the
time they had together. They talked and learned more about each other and Luna taught Sun
about the ground and what it was like. As they talked more they grew closer. Soon Sun wished
he could go down to the ground and visit her; on the other hand, Luna wished she could join
him in the sky. When Luna was away from Sun, he would dim, barely letting out any light. The
creatures grew scared of Sun’s chaotic emotions.
One day Luna inquired to Sun if it was possible to join him in the sky forever and Sun grew
silent and distant. When she tried to ask again, Sun refused saying, “Luna, I have not asked
much of you as you have never asked much of me, so I ask you to never wish my life upon
yourself.” Hesitantly she agreed.
One day Luna was talking to the elder of her kind, Zulu. Somehow they breached the topic of
Sun. She asked, “Why won’t he tell me how I can join him in the sky? Is it because he does not
like me?” For once in her life she was upset, unbalanced.
“No, darling, he just worries that you will join him in the sky to be stuck there for eternity like
him.” Zulu replied calmly.
“But that’s what I want, and I thought he wanted that too.” Perturbed she paced around.
“Luna, he loves you, and that is why he is protecting you from his life.” He said solemnly.
“I want his life; I want to spend eternity with him, even if I forsake my earthly being.” Before the
elder could reply she pleaded, “Please elder, please just tell me how.” Devotion and love rolled
out of her eyes in waves locking Zulu in his spot making him rethink his plan.
“Sun will know something is up. He will try to stop you.”
“I want to know.” It is the right choice, her mind thought earnestly.
The next day Luna was very energized and both excited and nervous at the same time. I can do
this, she thought to herself. Then she flapped her wings and started to soar up to Sun.
Past the tree canopies. Past the mountain peaks glistening with the light of the sun. Past the
clouds. Past Sun and Luna's rendezvous spot. Higher and higher.
Sun was confused at first but then he saw the determined expression she held his gaze with. A
few things clicked into place as he put the facts together. Watching her slow ascent he grew
frustrated because he couldn't move to block her.
Luna felt a tingling sensation in her stomach that grew bigger as she climbed. She saw Sun
looking at her with pleading eyes that whispered to her, don't do this, don't do this. He looked
so tiny and he seemed to grow smaller... wait he was? Luna was at a loss thinking how is he
getting smaller? But then Luna was jerked out of her thoughts as agony bloomed in her chest
and grew out. She tried to flap her wings to stay aloft but the thing was she didn't have any
wings.
Where did they go?
She was going to look around but a bright silver light blinded her for a few seconds.
Sun was watching Luna hopelessly as she started to shift before his eyes. She was a winged-one
and now she was an unearthly being. Sun knew what was happening and wished he could block
out her ear piercing howls of pain as she transformed. Then a bright light flashed leaving him
dazed. Next he saw a thing in place where Luna once was. It was large compared to a wingedone but smaller than him. He saw that is was roughly a circular shape with a silver hue. It was
emitting a beautiful fuzzy haze. He knew that though it did not look like Luna it was in fact her.
She blinked open her eyes and looked at Sun and immediately he knew one thing.
She is no longer Luna, but my Moon, my opposite, my love.
Sun and Moon lived on forever in harmony. They brought balance to the world. With balance
came time, day and night and life and death. The ocean now splashed onto the beach with a
swoosh. The world escaped its timeless cocoon. The creatures soon developed different
properties and traits, some still slept in the day, while most others slept at night. The world was
now different, nothing was ever the same and everything eventually changed.
