wasKansas.UnderlyingitallwashisdesiretobuildatranscontinentalrailroadtogothroughChicago.TheKansasNebraskaActallowedeachterritorytodecidetheissueofslaveryonthebasisofpopularsovereignty.Kansaswith

Insomesmalltownsthemenarecalledupnearlyeverynighttoholdthemslevesinreadinesstomeettheworstas
scoutingpartiesofAlabamiansGeorgiansandMissouriansarearoundcontinually,plunderingclothesyards,horsesand
cattle,andeverythingtheycanlayholdof.AfewmilesfromLawrenceamanwasplowing.apartyofSouthernerscame
alongandbeinghungrykilledhisbestox,atewhattheywanted,tookawaysomeandlefttherest.Suchlikeoccurrences
arealmostdailytakingplace.LastThursday,newscamefromLawrencethatshewasinthehandsoftheRuffians,and
