WV Camping Brochure - West Virginia Department of Commerce

customize your camping adventure
It’s all about location, location, location! The Mountain State has no shortage of locations from which to choose. In addition to more
than 50 state park and forest locations, there’s an abundance of private campgrounds throughout the state. You’ll find luxurious cabins
fully equipped with kitchens and rejuvenating hot tubs, remote back-to-nature campgrounds, and everything in between. Places such
as Pipestem Resort State Park and The Good Evening Ranch offer guests a range of activities, including golf, water sports, boat rentals,
fishing, hiking and horseback riding as well as year-round special events for the young and young at heart. A weekend stay at Stonewall
Resort State Park would not be complete without a round of golf on its nationally recognized course, a boating trip on the lake or a family wildlife adventure in Bright Star Park, conveniently located on the resort’s grounds.
RV country
If half the fun of a West Virginia vacation is the journey, the other half
is to know that your home away from home is as close as finding the
ideal place to park your RV! The options are almost endless and offer
RV campers a choice in where they want to rest for the evening, a week
or the entire camping season. Dallas Pike Campground in the Northern
Panhandle can accommodate a number of RV enthusiasts and their
families. Over in Clarksburg you can enjoy Wilderness Waterpark &
Campground with lake swimming and boat rentals. If your journey
includes visits to historic sites you will find the Harpers Ferry Washington, DC KOA campground among your options while in the Eastern
Panhandle. The Potomac Highlands offer a number of terrific sites,
some with pools like the Alpine Shore Campground in Bowden. Mountain Lake Campground & Cabins in Summersville is one of the area’s
largest campgrounds with nearby recreational activities. In Ronceverte,
you will find Second Creek Campground where you can relax after a
day of rafting on the New River or hiking throughout the gorge area.
Big Earl’s Campground in Justice will be a great spot to camp while
you and your family share the thrill of ATV riding on the Hatfield-McCoy
Trails. Our Metro Valley area also has wonderful campgrounds to make
you feel at home such as Fox Fire Resort in Milton. Over in our MidOhio Valley region is Mountwood Park Family Campground in Waverly.
Whatever region of our state you want to explore - from our rolling hills,
breathtaking views, abundant natural resources, historic heritage and
unique cultural offerings - there is an RV destination that will perfectly
match YOUR perfect vacation plans. Go to www.wvtourism.com and
click Places to Stay at the top and then scroll down to Campgrounds for
more information.

leave the firewood at home
When you come to West Virginia, leave the firewood at home. Tree-killing invasive species of plants, insects
and diseases are easily spread through firewood that is brought here from outside the state.
In Fall 2007, the emerald ash borer (EAB) was found in Fayette County and is believed to have been brought
into the state via infected firewood. EAB is an incredibly destructive insect that has killed an estimated 25
million ash trees in the United States since 2002. A quarantine is in effect prohibiting the movement of any
firewood, ash logs, ash timber scraps and other forest-related articles from Fayette County to other West Virginia counties and to other
states. Bringing firewood into West Virginia from other EAB infected states including Michigan, Ohio and Indiana also is prohibited.
Since most camping facilities offer firewood from local sources for purchase, you can pack a little lighter, buy your firewood in-state and
help protect our beautiful forests from invasive species.

With its year-round fishing season, more than 20,000 miles of streams and
more than 100 public fishing lakes, West Virginia provides anglers with a variety of fishing opportunities and experiences. Every year, streams and small
public fishing lakes are stocked with rainbow, brown, brook and West Virginia
golden rainbow trout. You also can cast for smallmouth and largemouth
bass, walleye, channel catfish and musky. A number of catch-and-release
and fly-fishing-only areas provide some of the best fly fishing in the East.
Float trips also are available on the South Branch, Cacapon, Greenbrier and
New Rivers. To purchase your fishing license on-line, visit wvdnr.gov.
water sports
Bask in the warmth of the summer sun and enjoy a refreshing
dip in the cool waters of one of West Virginia’s many bodies of
water. Whether you take a swim in one of our beautiful rivers
or in a scenic mountain lake, please make sure the area has
been specifically designated for swimming. Many state parks
and forests, as well as other camping facilities, offer swimming pools for guests who want to take the plunge and beat
the summer heat.
West Virginia is a perfect destination for boaters and canoeists from novice to expert. Our rivers and lakes offer ideal
conditions for families and beginners to experience all that
West Virginia’s natural surroundings have to offer. Whether
fishing, sightseeing or simply paddling around, our rivers and
lakes provide boaters with a wonderful outdoor adventure.
Our waters not only lead canoeists through breathtaking
mountains and miles of scenic shoreline, but also provide
advanced paddlers with an opportunity to test their skills on
some of the best rivers in the country. Many of the state’s
lakes, including Stonewall Jackson, Tygart and Beech Fork,
have rental crafts to meet your boating needs. From pontoons
to kayaks to canoes and paddle boats, you’ll find something
to get you out on the water.
Summersville Lake in Nicholas County is one of the most popular scuba diving destinations in the eastern United States.
This man-made lake, the largest in West Virginia, offers clear,
clean freshwater and great underwater visibility. Besides
scuba diving and snorkeling, Summersville Lake offers opportunities to boat, fish and swim. During summer months the
level of the lake is raised, providing more than 2,700 acres of
surface water to meet all your water sports needs.
horseback riding
There is perhaps no better way to experience the grandeur of
West Virginia than on horseback. Trails leading to breathtaking
views wind throughout the Mountain State. Many camping facilities have stables on-site with horses available for individual,
family or group trail rides and offer boarding for those who wish
to bring their own horses. Facilities that feature horseback riding
include Greenbrier River Trail, Cranberry Campground, Cranberry
River Sites, Lake Sherwood Recreation Area, Lake Stephens
Campground, Mountwood Park Family Campground, Passages To
Adventure and Yokum’s Vacationland. Even more camping facilities are located in close proximity to stables that offer horseback
riding opportunities for your camping vacation fun. Check the
chart inside for more information on horseback riding opportunities or go to wvtourism/adventures.com.
historical interest
West Virginia has a tumultuous and fascinating history and is the
only state born of the Civil War. The state boasts more than 20
Civil War sites on the National Register of Historic Places and 15
Civil War Discovery Trail Stops. The hallowed ground of cemeteries
and the now-peaceful battlefields give silent testimony to one of
the most trying times in our nation’s history.
hunting
Hunting is a time-honored tradition in the Mountain State. From
big game like bear and deer to waterfowl and small game, West
Virginia is a hunter’s paradise. Nearly 1.5 million acres of public
land are open for hunting when visitors swell the number of hunters to about 400,000. To purchase your hunting license on-line,
visit wvdnr.gov.
If whitewater rafting is on your list of things to do, West
Virginia has some of the best in the country. From easy Class
I to high-adventure Class VI, any of the state’s outfitters can
help you plan the right whitewater experience for you and your
family. For a complete list go to wvtourism.com/riversports.
