MAY 2015 INSIDE: Walking Food, Wine and Beer Tasting Outdoor Series Craft Beer Class Pool Opens May 23rd Brevard Music Center Chamber Quartet REMINDER: The Clubhouse is closed for lunch and dinner on Tuesdays starting in May. President’s Message —by Chris Burns I find the March and April board meetings to be the yin and yang of a perfect banking relationship…in March we figure out how much to deposit and in April we decide on how much to withdraw. And thus, as alluded to last month, we have our 5-year capital projects plan in place. For those of you who detest balancing your checkbook and find numbers a boring necessity of life, go ahead and skip to the next paragraph. For you numbers people, this is for you: As your finance committee and board moves into capital planning, there are several board policies that are meant to help us keep an eye on short-term and long-term cash reserves. One of those policies is to budget capital expenditures so that we maintain $1Million in cash reserves at the low point of our annual operating cycle…April 30. From a practical standpoint, since we have been operating near that level of cash reserves for several years, this means that we essentially spend our free cash flow on capital projects. Also, as our Club has a Pool News long, debt-averse history, we pay as we go. As I told you last month, we budgeted to cash flow about $327,000 in the next fiscal year, so we will also budget to spend about that amount on capital maintenance and improvements in this fiscal year. Given the size and age of our facilities, there are several “givens” each year that we need to budget, as they are just facts of life. For instance, we have about $50,000 in golf cart obligations, we will have about $50,000 in unplanned capital maintenance and replacement items throughout the year (ice machines, heating systems, painting, etc.) and we will need to replace about $50,000 of golf course mowing machinery throughout the year. So, no math degree needed to see that we are left with about $175,000 to make other capital improvement/maintenance decisions for the upcoming year. The board was presented with nearly $1Million in capital requests this year, so obviously, it was no easy decision to choose what we can fund. Furthermore, all of these requests were very worthy, which makes for lengthy discussions and tough decisions. In fact, between the finance committee and board, we had well over 5 hours of discussion. The guiding principles this year revolved around making the biggest impact on the most —by Carly Owenby Pool Grand Reopening is Saturday, May 23 Schedule: Saturday - Wednesday: 10:00 am – 11:00 am Adult Only Lap Swim 11:00 am – 7:00 pm Pool open for all swimmers Thursday 10:00 am – 11:00 am Adult Only Lap Swim 11:00 am – 7:00* pm Pool open for all swimmers *Beginning June 4, the Pool stays open till 8:00 pm on Thursdays Friday (Fun Friday Cookouts begin June 5 – Aug 21): 10:00 am – 11:00 am Adult Only Lap Swim 11:00 am – 7:00* pm Pool open for all swimmers *Beginning June 5, the Pool closes at 9:00 pm on Fridays Members and the largest attraction for new Members. Although the plan does fund quite a few capital projects under $25,000, there are three major areas where capital funds will be spent this year. Parking Lot Paving: Continuing with the most needed areas, we will repave the driveway and parking area between the Grill and the front door of the Clubhouse. Clubhouse and Grill Landscaping: Nearly $50,000 was appropriated to re-landscape areas around the proshop, grill and number 11 green. More will be announced on this once the landscape plans are presented. Clubhouse Outdoor Dining: Improvements here will include new, comfortable furniture, fire pit tables and see-through railing. With the process complete, your board is extremely excited about the continued direction Hendersonville Country Club is moving. Our membership applications over the past few months are trending in a positive direction and our capital improvements should make HCC the place for you and our new members to feel proud to spend your free time! Managers Message —by Anthony Chelena May 1st marks the beginning of a new fiscal year and last month’s Score outlined many of the changes for the upcoming year. As mentioned last month, if you are reading this newsletter you are reading it online because it is not being printed. It has been emailed to all Members on our email list and is on the front page of the Club’s Website. We’d love to email the Club’s news to every email address in your household. Maybe you and your spouse have different emails, or you use a different email at your office. We’d love to send The Score to all the email addresses you provide to us at [email protected]. We are so pleased to be welcoming seven new members to the Club in May and we expect to welcome six more in June. Unfortunately, this is about the same number of members we lost in the same time period. Time marches on. Age and health are, by far, the most significant reasons Members leave our Club and we dearly miss our Members when they leave. Godspeed to the Members we lose and welcome to our newest Members. And thank you to all the Members for continuing to talk to your friends about the Club and for sponsoring them into membership. Participation in Junior Golf and Junior Tennis may be at an all-time high for Hendersonville Country Club and I am so excited to see these kids having fun on the golf course and tennis courts. And I expect I’ll be seeing a lot of these kids at the pool this summer, too. Speaking of the pool, please remember that your adult children over 23 years old aren’t Members of Hendersonville Country Club unless they’ve actually joined the Club and are paying dues. If they aren’t Members, they are guests and guests are welcome at the pool two times per season and must be accompanied. Out of town guests, or guests staying in your home have other terms. Call me for details. I only bring this up because Members expect our pool guest policies to be enforced and we are going to make new efforts this year to intercept non-members. Expect strict enforcement. Clubhouse Manager Dayna Kelsey hit the ground running since her arrival and I’m already seeing signs of her impact. I’m seeing new training techniques with her service staff and she’s introducing all sorts of interesting new food & beverage offerings. I knew I had a go-getter on my hands when she told me in her interview that the Clubhouse HAD to change to a more elegant wine glass. Last month she introduced a small plate appetizer-type menu and small batch bourbon offerings for the Clubhouse and they’ve been very popular already. And way downstairs in our basement, she’s got some liqueur infusions macerating right now getting ready for a roll-out in June. And there’s also something I look closely at every day, she’s managing costs very well, too. Welcome Dayna. Go girl! Note the walking beer and wine tasting on the golf course June 17th. This event is designed for any Member who eats food, drinks beverages and can walk one mile. Golf experience is not necessary because keeping score will not be allowed as the golf course is just the setting for the food, beer and wine tastings. But this would be a great event to introduce yourself or maybe your non-golfing spouse to the golf course. Chamber Quartet 6:00 PM • May 12 Join us for an evening of delicious food and soaring chamber music. This event size will be strictly limited for a very intimate music experience. Start at 6:00 PM in the Clubroom and Laurel Room with cocktails and a dinner-like hors d’ oeuvres buffet, then at 7:00 PM move to the Main Dining Room to enjoy the performance in theater style seating. The price of 24.95++ per person includes food and music. We request that gentlemen wear jackets while attending this event. Walking Food, Wine & Beer Tasting on the Golf Course Open to all HCC Members from all Membership Categories $20 per person 6:30 PM June 17 Bring one, only one golf club (we will lend one to you if necessary) and a golf ball. Before we start we will show you four bottles of wine and three bottles of beer. Then report to the golf course where you will play a hole of golf, walking and not keeping score. After you complete each hole you will blind sample some of the beers and wines and enjoy some hors d’oeuvres, then you will proceed to the next hole and repeat until you’ve played three holes and sampled all the food, beer and wine. After golf, any person who correctly identifies all the beers and wines will win a prize. Keeping your golf score is NOT allowed! Call Emily for reservations. HCC’s Explore the Outdoors Series Ever thought about how to get involved in canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, or other outdoor activities that are so prevalent in our area? Well HCC is going to “test the waters” and organize some seminars and trips that will allow you to learn more about what’s involved and how to get started. We are kicking off the series with an easy camping trip, a bike ride on the Swamp Rabbit Trail and seminar entitled Paddling WNC. Family Bicycling on the Swamp Rabbit Trail • May 3 No Charge Join us for a great day of bicycling from Travelers Rest to downtown Greenville (approximately 9 miles each way) on the abandoned railway turned into a bicycle path. http://greenvillerec.com/swamprabbit Meet at the Hendersonville Country Club at 9:00 AM for the drive (in your own car) to Sunrift Adventures in Travelers Rest. From there, everyone is on their own to pedal as far, linger as long, and return as they wish. This will not be a guided trip. Many groups expect to pedal to Reed Creek Park in downtown Greenville to enjoy one of the many restaurants for lunch, or some may choose to bring their own picnic in the many parks along the trail before pedaling back to Travelers Rest. (A one way shuttle can be arranged if you request in advance.) In any case, there are many options for lunch and refreshments along the way. Bring all your own equipment or rent a bicycle from Sunrift Adventures (864) 834-3019. Call the Club at 692-2261 to let us know you plan to join us. Paddling WNC • May 6, 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM No Charge Do you have a canoe, kayak or some sort of boat in your basement or garage and you wonder how, where and with whom to use it? Are you thinking about buying one? Join us for our Explore Outdoors talk. You will leave with an understanding of what to buy, what you already own, what it was designed to do, and maybe meet some people who will do it with you. This talk will be led by Chris Burns, a long time canoe instructor for Tennessee Valley Canoe Club. This interactive session will give you an overview of how to get started, what gear is needed, what’s involved and where to do it. At this event plans will be organized for a group to paddle a gentle stretch of the French Broad River past the new Sierra Nevada brewery and their riverside refreshment area. Please call for reservations. Camping on the Golf Course • Saturday, May 16 $25 per Adult, $12.50 per Child Get your family, tent and sleeping bags ready to experience the Hendersonville Country Club golf course like you’ve never experienced it- all night long! The Club will have a limited number of “campsites” available for this sleepover behind #4 green and to the left and right of #5 tee. It will start with a hotdog/hamburger cookout, then we’ll provide marshmallows to roast on our campfire, watch a movie on our giant screen, then, in the morning, wake up to coffee, juice and a breakfast casserole, break down your tents and go home for some sleep. Maximum 2 non-member guests per membership family. No pets, please. We are actively seeking new Members to replace those who are leaving the Club. Please contact the office if you have any prospects for membership. Golf News ALWAYS BE READY TO HIT ON THE TEE —by Ben Balentine • • • • • Each year it seems necessary to remind our members how important the pace of play at HCC has become. We play between 25,000 and 30,000 rounds of golf per year with the majority being played between April and November. This being the case, I hope you can see why it is imperative to maintain a pace of play that everyone can enjoy. A round of golf at Hendersonville Country Club should never take longer than four hours to play. Some may feel this pace is too fast but, remember, slow play is the result of bad habits and bad habits can be corrected by following these suggestions. • • Proceed directly to your ball. Plan your shot and select your club while approaching your ball. Take one practice swing and get ready while others are hitting. Carry a spare ball in your pocket. When doubt about a stray ball, play a provisional. • The first player ready to hit should do so. Let shorter hitter play first. Watch other players drive so you can help determine the location of ball. After hitting, return your clubs and be ready to proceed. ON THE GREEN DON’T WASTE TIME • • • • • • Never record your score on or near the green. Don’t leave your bag or cart in front of the green. Leave it off to the side towards the next tee. Set your extra clubs down between the pin and your bag. Give instructions only on the driving range. When a ball is lost for two minutes wave the following group through. Drop off cart passenger, and then go to your ball. Craft Beer Class with Gary Clancy JUNE 3 • 6:30 PM • $25++ PER PERSON Are you intimidated by the dizzying array of craft beers now on the supermarket shelf? Join Gary Glancy, an award-winning journalist who writes exclusively about beer, and us for a Craft Beer Class. Gary is also a Certified Cicerone, which is the beer equivalent of a wine Sommelier. At this class we will sample the most popular and distinctive styles of craft beer and discuss their history, their differences and their brewing processes. Then, we’ll take a break to enjoy some beer matched foods and finish with a sampling of exotic craft beers and discuss food pairings. The class includes sampling 8 craft beers and a light meal specially designed for beer. Call Emily at 692-2261 for reservations. Golf, Beer & Wings THURSDAY AFTERNOONS AFTER 3:00 PM Join us on Thursday afternoons in April and May for Golf, Beer & Wings. Here’s the set up: Tee up after 3:00 PM, rent a cart for at least 9 holes, get a coupon for a free beer and a dozen wings to enjoy (same day) at the Main Clubhouse (Grill & Ward Room not included). Knock off work early on Thursday and play some golf. Then, then sit on the patio and enjoy the fruits of your labor- beer and wings! What could be a better way to get ready for Friday? • • • Park your cart and clubs to the rear of the green, in line with the next tee. Line up your putt before your turn. Putt continuously until you hole out, unless you are in another player’s line. Remember to stay up with the group in front of you NOT in front of the group behind you. Rule 3-C in your club handbook reads: “The golf committee request that if your group cannot keep pace with the group in front you must pick up your ball and proceed to the next hole”. The course ranger and golf staff will be empowered to administer this policy. Please cooperate with your staff and help play move at a reasonable pace. Golf Tips —by Jay King COUPLES GOLF The month of May is the start of Sunday Couples Golf and Friday Night Twilight Golf. On Friday the 29th, we will host the very popular Twilight Event with a 5:00pm shotgun start and on Sunday, July 5th, the first Couples Event will kick off with tee times beginning at 12:30pm. Please call the golf shop to sign up. Family Golf Every Saturday through July 11:00 – 1:00 pm SNAG – Starting New at Golf program is a funfilled opportunity for your family to get out on the course and learn how to play golf! This is a low-skill, high-fun practice with putting and chipping drills designed to introduce golf to children and women. Open to ALL MEMBERS! What a great Masters! Jordan Spieth became a major champion as Ben Crenshaw said goodbye to the Masters tournament. It was nice to see the two of them play a practice round together as Crenshaw gave some valuable green reading and putting advice to the young 21 year old. Putting is the most important part of golf and unfortunately it is the area where I find our members take the least amount of lessons. In reality “the short game” is where you can improve your stroke average the most. (Q.E.D) It is important to have good technique without being too technical. There are many ways to strike the ball, however your clubface needs to be square at impact for your full swing and the same in your putting stroke. I have noticed an increase in improvement and understanding for my students due to the usage of video during lessons. I now would like to promote a tool I am using for putting instruction. T.O.M.I (The Optimum Motion Instructor). T.O.M.I measures: alignment at address and impact, path of stroke at impact, stroke path and rotation, shaft angle, effective loft, impact spot on clubface, and velocity and stroke tempo. Most of the information is to allow me an absolute reading during the lesson process, but it helps the student understand patterns in your putting motion. The data compiled can be stored to view in the future for comparison or to look back at a time when you were putting well. This is a great tool to use in selecting a putter that fits your stroke. I hope to see everyone working on their putting this season. Spring is here and everything on the golf course appears to be shaping up well. Our staff has again been put together for the season, and they are quickly getting orientated to our maintenance practices. We are very fortunate to such a veteran, full time staff.
