OUR IMMERSION OPTION
HAS TWO DIFFERENT STREAMS
Faculties of Arts,
Social Sciences, and
Health Sciences,
and the Telfer School
of Management
Immersion courses are a
combination of two courses:
a regular subject course (such as
history, nursing or accounting)
taught in French, accompanied
by a weekly 90-minute language
course. This accompanying
language course is taught by a
language professor and is designed
to help you with the material from
your subject course.
of uOttawa courses
are offered in both
languages.
The University of Ottawa has
been a bilingual institution for
more than 150 years. One third
of our students are Francophone,
and there are more than 3,000
Francophiles (people who love
French!) currently studying
partially in French at uOttawa.

Qualitative grades
(Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory) are
pass/fail marks that you can choose
to receive instead of a letter grade
for your courses taught in French.
S/NS grades don’t affect your
average, making it easier to renew
your scholarships — or just impress
your parents!
If you’ve done French as a
second language in high school,
you’re eligible for immersion
here at uOttawa.

French is an official language
in 29 countries.
Bilingual Canadians earn more than
unilingual Canadians on average.
(Globe & Mail, 2010).
Employment rates are higher for
bilingual than unilingual Canadians
(Canadian census, 2006)
According to Bloomberg Rankings,
French is the second most useful
business language other than English
(2011).
Studies indicate that immersion
students just do as well, and
sometimes better, on math and
science tests than unilingual
Anglophones.
Research suggests that bilingual people
have enhanced problem-solving and
reasoning skills.
French immersion students at
uOttawa do just as well in their
courses taught in French as they do
in their courses taught in English.
