Synthesis

Synthesis
Objectives:
 write reactants and products in words and symbols for BOTH simple & complex synthesis
SIMPLE SYNTHESIS
REACTANTS:
PRODUCTS:
2 elements
1 compound
WHAT HAPPENS:
cation
the elements combine
anion
+

NOTES:
•
•
•
Remember the list of elements that are diatoms
Remember the cation comes first in a compound
Remember to write formulas according to criss cross
chlorine + sodium  sodium
chloride
Cl2 + Na  NaCl
aluminum + sulfur aluminum
sulfide
Al + S  Al2S3
COMPLEX SYNTHESIS
REACTANTS:
2 binary compounds with a common element (usually
oxygen)
PRODUCTS:
1 compound with a polyatomic ion
WHAT HAPPENS:
a polyatomic ion is crossed with the remaining
element
NOTES:
Even though complex synthesis and double displacement both have 2 compounds on the reactant side-complex synthesis has binary compounds
with a common element
magnesium hydroxide
MgO + H2O  Mg(OH)2
magnesium oxide + water 

lithium oxide + diphosphorus trioxide 
lithium phosphite
Li2O + P2O3  Li3PO3
water + dinitrogen pentoxide  nitric
acid
H2O + N2O5  HNO3
